  • If you give us information about your system, we can see what we’re talking about and make better suggestions.
  • You can do this by using inxi in a terminal or in console.

Welcome to the Manjaro community.

As a new forum user, please take some time to familiarise yourself with Forum requirements; in particular, the many ways to use the forum to your benefit:

The Update Announcements should be checked frequently for important update related information.

These announcements contain a Known Issues and Solutions section and should generally be checked before posting a request for support.

Output of the following command formatted according to forum requirements (see links above) may be useful for those wishing to help:

inxi --admin --verbosity=8 --filter --no-host --width

Be prepared to provide more information and outputs from other commands when asked.

Regards.

It looks like the issue is related to having the plymouth-kcm package installed, however the Plymouth boot splash screens cannot be previewed outside of a TTY session, so the module in Plasma’s Systems Settings just shows image placeholders. You should still be able to select the themes, but you won’t see the boot splash you selected in action until you reboot.

I previously thought this was a bug - however, it really is an abberation…

The best ways to get to see them are:

  • Select and reboot
  • Click through 'Get New…
  • From ‘Get New…’ link to the web:

It’s understandable that you think it’s a bug - but it’s actually just one of the more janky aspects of Plasma… ideally there would be live previews available somehow.

According to Plymouth (Arch Wiki) this will preview the currently configured screen:

plymouthd; plymouth --show-splash; sleep 5; plymouth --quit

I seem to recall being able to preview new screens via the GUI, but I haven’t used Plymouth in a very long time, so my glasses might be rose-tinted.
