My laptop microphone does not work

None of my microphones work. I tried to use 3.5mm jack clipping microphone and I tried internal microphone - it didnt work, scilence. Tried to test the sound through Audacity. I have pipewire installed.

We need hardware info - else we are as blind as you are.

I can also try sudo lshw

This post isnt dead yet

I will not be able to help here - I could only fumble in the dark.
Only try this and that without really knowing what I’m doing.
… but you could try this too - other people have had audio issues as well and you can read all about it here :face_with_peeking_eye:

Ok, sure, I will try. Thank you.

I found some more ways to get the info about my system, I hope this would be of help:

This looks wrong.

How did you do that?

The correct way to install pipewire on manjaro is with the metapackage:

sudo pacman -Syu manjaro-pipewire

I did it just now

And I am currently on kernel-67-rt instead of kernel-66, I looked at the posts of other people and they said that the problem was resolved after updating the kernel, but its back in 2022, it didnt work for me.

Please make sure to reboot.

Also switch to a regular kernel.

rt is for specific needs like audio production.

Well, that certainly gives information about your system; perhaps too much, depending upon how security-conscious you might be. Technically speaking, it might be possible to trace purchases using hardware serial numbers, if someone had access to that information.

I would usually suggest something like:

inxi --admin --verbosity=8 --filter --no-host --width

With this command the --filter and --no-host portions effectively filter out any personally identifiable information from the output. Try it yourself (with and without) for comparison.

Cheers.

Please post more information about audio devices and microphone sources detected in PipeWire

pactl list cards; pactl list sources

Also suggest turning off pipewire-pulse service to test if Audacity can record direct from ALSA microphone sources without PipeWire

Audacity problem with monitor while recording

systemctl --user stop pipewire-pulse.socket pipewire-pulse.service

If direct recording from ALSA sources does not work get a full ALSA diagnostic

sudo alsa-info,sh --upload

and post link to uploaded data

I have edited the post, thank you for your advice!

This is at least better than it was.

But I dont know about that sndiod

I tried using JBL Tune 720TB to record the audio with 3.5mm jack connected to the mic port and Audacity started catching the actual recording. Its pretty poor quality, but I can hear my recording.
The internal microphone and the clipping pin mic that I can use only on my phone are not working in my laptop. For recording purposes I could go and find if there are any mics sold in electronic market so it could be compatible with my laptop.

check your manual of the laptop of the 3,5mm jack is a 3-pin (only headphone) or a 4-pin (headphone and mic) connection before you go shopping. i’m suspicious that your laptop-3,5mm jack is only a 3-pin headphone jack.

The JBL headset has a 4-pin jack connection cable so the microphone jack socket on laptop is probably compatible with any 2-pin or 3-pin jack plug but only one type of 4-pin jack
CTIA Vs OMTP: Understanding Headphone Jack Standards
If the other external microphone works with a mobile phone but not the laptop it is probably using the other wiring standard. This can be fixed by getting an adaptor to swap the connections:

Considering the comment about poor audio quality from the JBL microphone, it is probably not worth bothering about the internal microphone because it is not likely to be any better than the
headset microphone. It could be worse for electrical noise within laptop or vibrational noise from fans or using keyboard/touchpad
Both devices will have a sub-miniature (3-6mm) omnidirectional microphone that is too small to pick up bass frequencies but will pick background noise in the room
Lack of bass is not a major problem if microphone is only used for VOIP calls (less bass can improve intelligibility for VOIP calls)
To reduce moderate background noise, use a unidirectional microphone,
For high levels of background noise, use a dynamic microphone (stage microphone) and a pre-amplifier or audio interface

@cscs
sndio is for MIDI audio and unlikely to be relevant to microphone issues even if it was running

Thank you very much, I will look it up in the market.
