Manjaro (KDE) not booting after BIOS splash screen - switching from old nvidia to 6900 xt

Hi everyone!
Very basic manjaro user here. I’ve already looked around this forum for a solution to my problem but could not find one cause other threads do not relate enough to my problem.

As from title, I just changed from a GTX 960 to a AMD 6900XT (Sapphire NITRO+ SE), and I get no graphical environment after boot, I can enter the BIOS but can’t go further. Nonetheless, I can obtain graphical output with live usb and I can see that propietary drivers are installed.

But I have no idea what I could do to solve the problem. Some other threads refer to modifying some parameters through TTY interface but I can’t enter it because my login credentials do not work (which could be a problem, in general). Also, others refer to uninstalling and re-installing drivers which I can’t do as I can’t apply any suggestion if code is not provided since I’m a noob.

Please can anyone dedicate some time to help me??

Hello,

If you can either chroot in or boot into runlevel 3
(see [HowTo] Resolve an unbootable Manjaro (black screen, login failed, cant boot, etc))
Then lets look at your drivers:

mhwd -l -li

If you have, for example video-nvidia then remove it:

sudo mhwd -r pci video-nvidia

Then maybe try to force reinstall the open drivers (this should be your only gfx profile):

sudo mhwd -f -i pci video-linux

Then reboot (systemctl reboot)

I could get to my system through chroot and I actually have some nvidia drivers installed (very confused now), but I can’t get rid of them due to some depencies required by cuda.

Please try to provide actual output when available.
(if needed see this: [HowTo] use public command-line pastebin services without installing anything!)

I suppose you have to remove some packages then (again I do not know what you have installed):

sudo pacman -Rns cuda

Then continue with the removal of drivers as above.

But I’m on this forum from another pc (since the one with the issue is not usable), does your guide still apply?

Anyway, I was stuck in a process and I hard rebooted the machine to start again (cuda removal didn’t work cause directory was not found), now trying to boot the pc stops at a command line saying:

[FAILED] Failed to start pkgfile database update.

Ok let’s start again, I rebooted through the live usb mode and now using terminal (instead of “Ctrl+Alt+F2” mode) so I can copy-paste the output from command line.

Sure…

Just to be clear … you have chrooted into the existing install? via, ex:

manjaro-chroot -a

You will need to have a working internet connection to install/update packages.
So just connect in your live session before continuing with the commands.

manjaro-chroot -a

I am connected to my home Wi-Fi since the beggining of the process

Ok. Well lets sort the mirrors and resync:

sudo pacman-mirrors -f && sudo pacman -Syu

(this will query all mirrors globally unless you have set a custom list … add a number if you want to shorten the amount of queries, ex: sudo pacman-mirrors -f10)

Please report if it produces more errors or does not finish properly.

It appears there is some problem with resolving the mirror domains.
pacman-mirrors thinks you have no internet at all.

Are you behind some sort of firewall? You can confirm internet otherwise works?
Maybe there is a bad DNS configuration?

(by default modern browsers use their own DNS)

They dont work either … and fail for the same reason (domain name resolution).
I am really starting to believe it is a DNS problem.

First thing … please make sure your date/time/clock are properly set.

If there are still problems … we can set the DNS …

If you use Network Manager then you should be able to ‘configure network connections’ or open the connection properties (there are slightly different views depending on the desktop, etc)

In the IPv4 section; under Method; select “Automatic (Only Addresses)”; and input DNS servers
(cloudflare is 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1)

It just further makes DNS problem likely as it cannot lookup the domain and translate google.com to 8.8.8.8 but it can go to 8.8.8.8 directly.

Set and applied … (you may need to restart the connection)…
So … how about dig or ping now?

ping manjaro.org -c3
dig manjaro.org

If it looks normal, without any more domain resolution errors …

Then continue on to pacman:

sudo pacman-mirrors -f && sudo pacman -Syu
