Manjaro boots slow gets stuck and hangs

Hello everyone,

I hope I posted in the correct category please correct if wrong.

First of all I love Linux and Manjaro and I don’t want to change back to windows. My problem is kinda hard to explain, because sometimes everything works just fine but often everything is kinda borked. If something crashes or hangs I try to access Ctrl+alt+F1-5. The problem is most of the time I cannot login. Username works but then it’s just a curser blinking and I cannot type anymore. Same is when I cann login to Manjaro at some point it just hangs I do not know why. But sometimes everything just works for hours. So here I am trying to fix manjaro but don’t know how or what to to do find the error.

If you need any more information please don’t hesitate to ask for any information you need I try to provide the information as possible. Because sometimes I cannot access anything because it gets stuck so often. Because of that Iam writing with my Smartphone.

Yeah I hope someone can help me.

Welcome to the forum!

What you are describing would be consistent with a local denial of service, or otherwise put, one or multiple processes are getting stuck and are driving up the load on the CPU to such an extent that every key press and every move of the mouse becomes just one more CPU instruction to be added to the top of the pile of instructions that the CPU is trying to process.

Now, given the randomness of the occurrence of this phenomenon on your computer, I am personally inclined to suspect a hardware failure. I have experienced this type of behavior myself a few years ago, on a refurbished machine where both the power supply and the onboard graphics adapter were dying.

However, it could also be as simple as an intermittently failing memory module, or a connector that got dislodged somehow. So if possible, open up your computer housing and check whether your memory modules, drive connector and PCI(e) peripherals are still properly seated.

While you’re at it, also make sure there’s no dust in the fans, because overheating can do this too. Then next, if the problem returns, try booting up with memtest86+ and let it run for at least 6 hours.

If the problem then still returns, then we know it’s hardware ─ memtest86 doesn’t load anything other than itself into memory. But overheating, a failing memory module and/or a failing power supply are the three most likely culprits, in my experience.

Hello,

Thank you for your fast response. I will try memtest and post the results. The only thing I find cannot understand is. I only recently switched to linux and windows was running just fine no problem what so ever. So I will report back when I run memtest for 6+ hours.

Thank you again

Regards

Hello,

So let memtest run over night. It completed with no error over a time span of 5h22min. Since I cannot attach images or post links I don’t know how to upload the picture.
So I don’t think it’s a hardware issue. What else could it be?

Regards

  1. Please read this:
    How to provide good information
and press the three dots below your post and press the :pencil2: to give us more information so we can see what’s really going on.
Now we know the symptom of the disease, but we need some more probing to know where the origin lies…
  2. An inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width would be the minimum required information for us to be able to help you. (Personally Identifiable Information like serial numbers and MAC addresses will be filtered out by the above command)
Also, please copy-paste that output in-between 3 backticks ``` at the beginning and end of the code/text.

What should I do now?

Please read this:

(At a minimum the Linux has multiple kernels section, at a maximum everything but the “What’s this Upstream / Downstream business” section)

Then install at least one LTS kernel and boot from that. (If you don’t know how, shout out!)

If the problem persists in an LTS kernel, please read this:

Because every time you press the power button, your system gets damaged more and more and if you’re beyond 10 times doing that, you’re in for a reinstall with your new-found knowledge!

:scream:

Hey,

Thank you for your fast response. REISUB is already enabled and used a few times.
LTS Kernel I will install if my pc lets me and test if that helps.
Is there anything else I could do to test or something to find the culprit?

Regards

Hey,

so REISUB is still my best friend. Tried the LTS Kernel 5.10. Atleast it boots completely but everything is running like its on drugs. The Settings app opens like in a split second but when I click on a menu point. You see that it has registered the click but nothing happens. After a minute or so the menu opens and I can correct my Screen Settings. Another example all the programs that are running should be visible in my taskbar? For example I can search for steam, but I can only find my chat window in search. This window opens up but its not shown in taskbar. So Steam is running in background somehow? This list goes on and on. Everything kinda seems off.
Btw, inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width got stuck here. Did not continue.
