Linux LTS 5.10 Gnome lock screen crash

LTS 5.4 is running perfectly fine.

I installed 5.10 and rebooted. I can login and everything is working well until I lock the screen.

Then I can’t do anything. The screen remains black, even if I try to open a TTY (e.g. Ctrl+Alt+F3).

Only a hard reset helps and I need to switch back to 5.4.

I couldn’t find any information on this issue, any clue where I can start to investigate?

A good start is to provide some info as described in this post.

How to get your computer to more safely reboot can be found here.

Reboot and hold Shift while rebooting.

When grub appears select advanced options and boot to linux54.

When booted to linux54 remove the undesired kernel(s)

Yes, this is what I did (except pressing shift, grub always show up after reboot).

So there’s no hurry for me to fix it, until I get a problem with 5.4.

Usually an issue with KMS not being ready before the graphics server tries to start, enable early KMS for your kernel driver, i.e. amdgpu for the amd systems, and nvidia and nvidia_drm for the prop nvidia driver(arch forum)
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Kernel_mode_setting#Early_KMS_start

I added i915 in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf without success.

Added that inside modules? & Have u regenerated the initramfs?

sudo mkinitcpio -p linux (or linux-lts if u have lts kernel)

I wasn’t sure, so I regenerated the initramfs. Without success.

Note that I got some error messages and had to use sudo mkinitcpio -P.

ERROR: Failed to load preset: `/etc/mkinitcpio.d/linux.preset'
ERROR: Failed to load preset: `/etc/mkinitcpio.d/linux-lts.preset'

This is the topic on Arch forum.

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=262589

This is not exactly the same issue, as it describes the inaccessibility of gdm, while I can always login at first. Additionally, the solution presented there didn’t work in my case.

My problem appears after I lock the screen and the monitor turns off. If I try to unlock during the few seconds before the screen turns off, there is no issue.

I found the same issue on Arch forum. Unfortunately, not fixed yet.

I tested today with Kernek 5.10.49, still happening.

Just tested with Kernel 5.15, still not fixed…
