Linux 5.19: Display refresh rate is very low (about 0.25 fps)

Summary

When booting with a Linux 5.19 kernel, my computer’s built-in display seems to have an extremely low refresh rate. The display refreshes faster if I’m actively typing (e.g. typing into Konsole or pressing the arrow keys), but not if I’m moving the mouse or pressing and holding a key. The display refreshes faster in a TTY, but I still notice some delay when opening an application like vim or moving the cursor.

After about two minutes of using the desktop, the screen shows what looks like static. After a few more seconds, the screen goes black except for a few pixels at the top of the screen:
tmp

When this happens, TTYs work as expected — I can press ctrl+alt+F5 and my screen displays the contents of the TTY.

Reason for attempting to update

After a recent update, I found myself needing to restart the wireplumber service frequently to get audio to work. I’m running Linux 5.15 and the suggested solution was to update to Linux 6.x. I first discovered the above issue with the 6.0-based kernel.

Working kernel version: 5.15.81-1 (Installed through the “Kernel” tab in system settings)
First non-working kernel version of the kernels available in settings: 5.19.17-2

I attempted to run Ubuntu 22.10 on the computer which, I think, uses a 5.18-based kernel. I experienced the same issue.

provide full system info:
inxi -Faz
and kernel 5.19 is end of life, which means its no longer supported, so dont use it and remove it…
you are on wayland, so try with xorg

as @brahma said, no information → no answer. without basic information everything is digging in the dark!

please provide the output of

inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width

that’s better than inxi -Faz and please use the option of the preformatted text to paste the output inside there.

Additional information:
I’m experiencing the same symptoms with the 6.1.0-1 and 6.0.11 kernels with and without X11 — the contents of the screen update every second or so when moving my mouse and update faster when I’m typing. I’m also noticing the issue on the SDDM login screen.

An external monitor connected to the computer seems to have a much higher refresh rate (I’m not noticing the issue with the external monitor).

The issue seems to be mostly the same on X11 — the display seems to have a low refresh rate and updates faster if I’m typing. When the X11 session first starts, however, I see what looks like static/noise for a few seconds.

Thank you for helping me!

try adding the following parameter by opening this file:
kate /etc/default/grub
and in this line: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT inside the quotes add this parameter:
i915.enable_psr=0
dont remove anything from there!, just add it to existing parameters, save the file, update grub:
sudo update-grub
reboot and test
if you still have the issue, post logs:
journalctl -b0 -p4 --no-pager

1 Like

I’m still experiencing the issue with i915.enable_psr=0 appended to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT.

Logs

Booting with the 6.1.0-1 kernel (X11):

$ journalctl -b0 -p4 --no-pager

this seems like a hardware malfunction. check all connections by unplugging RAM, GPU and plug it in again. before plug in check if there is dirt or dust inside. a thermal issue is also possible and it’s possible that the hardware is already broken.
you already stated that using different operating systems cause the same issue. this is a strong indication that it isn’t software related.

See: Intel graphics - ArchWiki if it helps.

Create and edit /etc/modprobe.d/i915.conf to add the option options i915 enable_guc=3
Do not forget to run sudo mkinitcpio -P

Try to do X11 configuration

It seems to work fine with Windows 11 and Linux 5.15. I’m hesitant to open up my laptop and remove components, but I might try that if nothing else works.

I’ve tried setting options i915 enable_guc=3 (and confirmed that it was set via dmesg). I’m still experiencing the issue.

I’ll try configuring Xorg.

Edit (configuring Xorg): I tried setting AccelMethod to uxa and blt (after removing options i915 enable_guc=3). With uxa, startx fails. I experience the same error with blt as with no AccelMethod set.

Note that, while less severe, I am also experiencing display refresh issues while using a TTY — when I press and hold a key, the display only updates briefly after I first push the key down, then again when I lift the key.

You didn’t tell us this ! You told using a different OS (ubuntu) causes the same issues.
If your’e not precise and lead us to wrong conclusions this thread will last forever.

that parameter should helped, at least according to archwiki for your lenovo slim 7…
post output from:
head /etc/default/grub

Sorry! I’ll try to be more precise! Again, thank you so much for the help!

Here’s what I think my options are:

  1. This might be a bug in the kernel – it happens in two different distros with similar kernel versions. If so, I could try doing a git bisect and reporting the issue to kernel maintainers. (However, I would like to avoid custom-building a kernel, if possible).
  2. Try adjusting driver options further — I’ve only briefly looked at the (linked above) intel graphics section of the Arch wiki. This might be helpful if default options for some of the drivers changed between versions of the kernel.

I think I’ll continue with option 2 because I am not looking forward to doing a git bisect.

Is there anything else I should try?

Thank you for the help so far!

Could you post a link to the Archwiki for my computer, please? I’m seeing wikis for similar computers (e.g. the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 (AMD)), but not the exact same model.

$ head /etc/default/grub
GRUB_DEFAULT=saved
GRUB_TIMEOUT=5
GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=hidden
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR="Manjaro"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet udev.log_priority=3"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""

# If you want to enable the save default function, uncomment the following
# line, and set GRUB_DEFAULT to saved.
GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT=true

I removed i915.enable_psr=0 before setting enable_guc=3. I’ll re-try with both i915.enable_psr=0 and enable_guc=3 and post the results. Edit: I’m experiencing the issue when both changes are made (both at the same time).

wanted to check if the psr=0 parameter was properly set…
there is no specific archwiki entry for your machine because the only know issue is what you have, and is fixed with the psr parameter:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Laptop/Lenovo
scroll down and there you find it:

To verify, this is how I’m setting enable_psr=0:

$ head /etc/default/grub
GRUB_DEFAULT=saved
GRUB_TIMEOUT=5
GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=hidden
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR="Manjaro"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet udev.log_priority=3 i915.enable_psr=0"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""

# If you want to enable the save default function, uncomment the following
# line, and set GRUB_DEFAULT to saved.
GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT=true

looks good, so add these 3 parameters:

intel_idle.max_cstate=1 i915.enable_dc=0 ahci.mobile_lpm_policy=1

save grub, update it, reboot and test…
dont remove the psr parameter yet

On Alder Lake it seems to be recommend using modesetting driver instead of the i915 directly.

File: /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf

Section "Device"
  Identifier "Intel Graphics"
  Driver "modesetting"
  BusID  "PCI:0:2:0" #bus-ID: 00:02.0
EndSection

Otherwise try step by step disabling some features, for example:

i915.enable_dc=0
i915.enable_fpc=0
i915.enable_psr=0
i915.enable_ips=0

Then you should know which function is causing that behavior.
More information… type modinfo 915 in a terminal.

It works!!! Thank you very much!

I would like power management, so I’m going to try removing those options one by one.

What exactly? Was it a problem with the cpu cstates? Now it is locked to C0/1 …
