Lenovo Legion loses Wifi connection after sleep

Hi all,

I am new to Linux and recently switched two of my laptops to Manjaro. I have no problems with my Asus VivoBook, but my Lenovo Legion looses the Wifi connection after waking up from sleep. In the journal below I can see some failures, but have no idea what to do. Hope someone can help?

Hi @AntonD,
I saw that you have now swap file or partition, do not now whether it could affect the wifi after sleep.

I found an unresponsed post with the same problem in the forum:
Wifi and brightness control problems after waking up from sleep

I have two suggestions to your problem: read the following posts, one from the forum and the other from github, in order to solve your problem.
RTL8822CE Instability even with newest kernel

Fix Wifi after sleep for Legion 5 Pro · Issue #7 · cszach/linux-on-lenovo-legion · GitHub

Hope it help, regards.

Okay, thanks. I will have a look to those and let the result know.

Well, In the first link I cannot see any solution.
I found this in the second link you gave me:

sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/rtw8852be.conf

In that file, add the lines
options rtw89_pci disable_aspm_l1=y disable_aspm_l1ss=y
options rtw89pci disable_aspm_l1=y disable_aspm_l1ss=y
options rtw89_core disable_ps_mode=y
options rtw89core disable_ps_mode=y

I followed this up, but with no result.

Do you think there should be a Swap file? And if so, how do I do that?
Anton

Hi @AntonD ,
After reading this post I could answer that the swap file is not neccessary.
New system - SWAP size for suspend to RAM - #4 by Aragorn

What are the ouputs of the following terminal commands?

cat /sys/power/state

cat /sys/power/mem_sleep

cat /sys/power/disk

I can not explain this line from the journalctl command you posted.

change: deactivating -> disconnected (reason 'sleeping', managed-type: 'full')

It seems something related to the Power managment.
Please, take a look at this post:
Power management/Suspend and hibernate - ArchWiki

Hope it help,

Hi J8a,
I am new to Linux and I don´t know much of it, but in the journal I see warnings and an error:

feb 01 11:13:54 NetworkManager[612]: <warn> [1769940834.0073] platform-linux: do-change-link[3]: failure 5 (Invoer-/uitvoerfout)

Especially "error setting IPv4 forwarding to ‘0’: Hulpbron is tijdelijk onbeschikbaar " (Resource temporarily unavailable). Coud this be the reason?

Here are the outputs you asked for:

Check out Section 3.8.3 here:

Summary:

create this file if it does not exist.
/etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-off.conf

By default there is:

[connection]
wifi.powersave = 3

Change the value to 2. Reboot for the change to take effect.

Possible values for the wifi.powersave field are:

NM_SETTING_WIRELESS_POWERSAVE_DEFAULT (0): use the default value
NM_SETTING_WIRELESS_POWERSAVE_IGNORE (1): don't touch existing setting
NM_SETTING_WIRELESS_POWERSAVE_DISABLE (2): disable powersave
NM_SETTING_WIRELESS_POWERSAVE_ENABLE (3): enable powersave
2 Likes

hmm, this file didn´t exist. I created it with:

sudo nano /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersafe-off.conf

containing: “wifi.powersafe = 2”

Now my wifi is gone and won´t even start again after restarting the laptop :frowning: .
I tried to remove that file with rm and rm -f but access is denied. I also changed the value to 0 (zero - default) but without change: no wifi; there is a message “NetworkManager-service not active”.

What can I do??

You created the file with root access, you need to remove it with root access or you will receive “access denied”

e.g. sudo rm /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/name of file

Also it is wifi.powersave = 2 , check your spelling.

If you used quotation marks, it might matter. The example does not have quotation marks e.g:

[connection]
wifi.powersave=2

Ah thanks, I am learning.
Stupid to type wrong spelling. I have removed the default-wifi-powersafe-off.conf file and created a new file: /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-off.conf with wifi.powersave = 2 (no quotation marks).

Sadly there is no result, NetworkManager-service is still not running. Meanwhile I removed the lines J8a gave me:

sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/rtw8852be.conf

In that file, add the lines
options rtw89_pci disable_aspm_l1=y disable_aspm_l1ss=y
options rtw89pci disable_aspm_l1=y disable_aspm_l1ss=y
options rtw89_core disable_ps_mode=y
options rtw89core disable_ps_mode=y

This also has no effect.

I now noticed the [Connection] line to put in the file :face_with_peeking_eye:. I did that and now wifi is back, NetworkManager-service is running. Thanks a lot!
Anton

You don’t appear to have that hardware. Of course there would be no effect.

Also, you have marked it as the solution to the issue, but you may need to run it like that for a bit , put the computer to sleep a few times and see if this is or was , really a power saving issue.

hmm, you were right. The first time I put it to sleep, the wifi connection came back, but the second time it didnot. But at least it comes back now when I restart the system.

I am not convinced that swapfile or swap partition is not needed for sleep/hibernation. I would create a swapfile or swap partition and see how it goes, if you intend on using the sleep/hibernation features. A swapfile may be easiest at this point. Personally, I don’t use the feature as my computer takes well less than a minute to cold boot.

I guess you are right. Cold boot only takes half a minute. It is just a MS Windows idea i guess to use sleep mode and my Asus laptop works fine with this. I have configured the system now shut down at closing the lid. Thanks for helping.

Slight update here, because that post is from a few years ago. I have since then heavily modified the partitioning on my system — without needing to reinstall :stuck_out_tongue: — and I now no longer have any swap partitions, even.

It is not needed for “sleep” — i.e. putting the system in standby mode, or otherwise put, suspend-to-RAM — but you do need a large enough swap device for hibernating, i.e. suspend-to-disk.

¨Sleep" on my laptop will be suspend-to-RAM, so I don´t need a swapfile/partition.
My problem is not solved, but it is allright to shut down at closing the lid and cold start again.
Thanks to all.
