Lagging Plasma / Disk sleep / Performance Issue

Hi there,

I am now using for about 2 - 3 years Manjaro (KDE) and I love it - I think it is a brilliant peace of work, until now the best distribution for my purposes - in the past, I used Suse, Mandriva, Kubuntu, Linuxmint, Debian, KDE Neon, MX Linux), MX Linux I am still using on slower machines where I want not to have any complications and where I want to avoid spending time in troubefixing aspects (for me, it seems to be very stable).

However, I experience now for about some months a strange behavior in Plasmashell - for some reason for some months now the system sporadically does not respond for a few seconds when I interact with Plasma (klauncher / start apps in Plasma) - the mouse pointer moves, also I can use the touchpad and the buttons in the touchpad, the applications (except those of plasmashell) run without interruptions and lagging, but I cannot start applications (e.g. via application launcher, kstarter, Alt + F2, etc.) - I sometimes have to wait more than 10 seconds until Plasma responds (e.g. the taskbar)…

The system load is moderate in each case, CPU < 10% (Intel i7, 10th Gen), RAM < 20% (16 GB RAM). It is noticeable that at the time of the lagging behavior plasmashell is shown with “Disk Sleep” in ksysguard in the CPU % column - that seems to be the key indicator for the problem - everytime plasmashell lags, disk sleep is the status of plasmashell. I did some googling over the last months, adjusted one or the other aspect (replace kio-git with kio and vice versa, turn on/off from swap drive, kernel upgrade/downgrade, etc.), also based on some topics here in manaro forum (e.g. KDE Plasma is laggy, Applications keep refreshing, Manjaro KDE critical bug: Plasmashell extreme CPU usage + IO write (also affecting lattedock, dolphin, krunner) - #24 by Nistau), but none of the aspects matched exactly my “problem”, and the measures seemed not to work for me.

Does anyone know why this disk-sleep occurs and how I can prevent it or if necessary how I can find out myself why this disk-sleep occurs?

I googled around regarding “Touchpad: client bug: event processing lagging behind by 12ms, your system is too slow” - imho that seems not to be the problem, however, I don’t know what to do even if that is the problem - any advice on that?

Please let me know if some other information about my system / the configuration might be helpful to find out what causes the problem.

Many thanks in advance for your help!

Kind regards,

D.

Update
It might be that I found now the cause for the problem:

All the time today when I saw plasmashell in “disk sleep”, there was also gvfs-udisks2-volume-monitor in “disk sleep” - when I killed gvfs-udisks2-volume-monitor, the “disk sleep” problem for plasmashell does not occur anymore… That is only a first indication, I will provide an update when I am sure that the problem with plasmashell in “disk sleep” does not occur anymore…

What is gvfs-udisks2-volume-monitor? Not absolutely sure, but considering the dependencies it seems to be dispensable for my purposes… I will try to remove it - when everything still works than I might get rid of that problem… Update follows…

Update 2:
Hey there,
I hereby confirm that the “problem” is solved by deinstalling gvfs - until now I experienced no downsides of the deinstallation.
Kind regards,
D.

I’ve had a similar problem pop up randomly lately, disabling swap etc didn’t help for me either but more apps were affected than plasmashell. I’ll see if your workaround does it for me as well

Edit: whelp, no difference

Hello,
Had the same issue here.
Instead of de-installation, I renamed the service “/usr/lib/systemd/user/gvfs-udisks2-volume-monitor.service.bk”.
It’s not pretty but I had no issue yet
