I too have the same problem. A lag when starting a program, thunderbird, firefox, libreoffice. It affects all my machines, my Thinkpad A275 and my Hp 840 G4.
My first guess is this is not related to OP … but is related to the known issues posted under the Release Announcements - namely xdg-desktop-portal-gnome

Many applications (firefox, thunderbird, telegram, etc) slow to start on desktops other than Gnome
There is a bug with xdg-desktop-portal-gnome

Workaround for gtk-based desktops (including Xfce)
