Kernel 6.12 low FPS in game after update again

My system: Manjaro Stable/Cinnamon/X11/AMD Ryzen 5 2600/Radeon HD 7790

As I already mentioned in this thread Hellpoint (v366) has very bad framerates I suffered from unplayable FPS in the game Hellpoint for years.
Finally after switching to kernel 6.12 some month ago I was able to get playable FPS :tada:

But after the recent kernel update from 6.12.21 => 6.12.25 the stuttering is back again.

So I am asking myself, has it something to do how the Manjaro kernel was build or is it a problem with the kernel itself and I should report it to kernel.org ?

Instead of asking yourself questions for which you have no answers, why not test a few other kernels for comparison?

Otherwise, I have nothing to add at this time.

Regards.

I am happy with the 6.12 LTS kernel and it worked with v21.
So something must had happened to v25 (i would wait for another 6.12 release).

If someone who is responsible for building the kernel could answer, if there where changes in the build config.

Otherwise there must be changes made by the kernel team itself, which disimproved 3D acceleration performance. Maybe it has something to do with amdgpu.

I was happy with an old van some years ago, until one day it lost an argument with a cup of sugar in the fuel tank (a very long story).

That you’re happy with any particular kernel is irrelevant, when the suggestion was to test others, which might have helped ascertain whether or not your issue is limited to kernel 6.12 on your hardware.

However, if you’re unwilling to investigate further, I’ll simply wish you luck and leave you with the following information, plus the usual request to provide system information as described (below).

Regards.

As a new or infrequent forum user, please take some time to familiarise yourself with Forum requirements, and the many ways to use the forum to your benefit:

Update Announcements

The Update Announcements contain important information and a Known Issues and Solutions section that should generally be checked before posting a request for support.

System Information

While information from *-fetch type apps might be fine for someone wishing to buy your computer, for Support purposes it’s better to ask your system directly; :eyes:

Output of the inxi command with appropriate parameters will achieve this (naturally, formatted according to forum guidelines) and will generally be more useful for those wishing to help:

inxi --filter --verbosity=8

or the short form:

inxi -zv8

Be prepared to provide output from other commands whenever asked. It’s equally important to provide as much actionable information as possible in your first post, rather than simply indicating there is a problem.

I came a long road of kernels. I had many versions of 5.4, 5.10, 5.15, 6.1 and 6.6
It never worked, till on 2025-03-29 when I installed 6.12 (6.12.19-1) for the first time and it worked.

For testing I installed 6.14.4-1 now with the same result. It doesn’t work.
It only worked with 6.12.19, 6.12.20 and 6.12.21

I also compared file /proc/config.gz of both kernels (6.12.21-4 <> 6.14.4-1), but can’t seem to see drastic changes to the graphical part.

For me it seems a problem with the kernel itself. I will try my luck there.
