KDE error for sddm-greeter: Could not find the Qt platform plugin „xcb obs“ in

Hi guys,

after this topic has been split out of the original, I will give more context to my problem.

This is a Manjaro KDE edition install and I guess this specific one has been installed with 20.x something, if not 19. I have only very few customizations, and none to the base system, just in the GUI. I mainly use Plasma X11, but have tried the Wayland Session from time to time to see the state of affairs.

This last round of updates (21.1.0 → 21.1.1) broke my sddm and plasma session. System boots up with a blank screen and mouse cursor. I can switch to a tty.

journalctl -b0 -p4 reveals an error for sddm-greeter: Could not find the Qt platform plugin „xcb obs“ in „“

I did try to get obs to work last week but was unsuccessful with screencapture in a wayland session. I did not change anything, I just installed one obs plugin that was supposed to make it work with waylan. Everything worked, even after reboots.

I tried uninstalling obs, but this did not help. I don’t even know if the current sddm or plasma problem stems from obs, I just assumed due to the error message above.

I setup ssh so I can easily access logs and stuff from outside to post here if needed.

I also stopped sddm and tried to start a manual plasma session, either wayland or xorg. both do not start up as they used to.

Any idea/help welcome

EDIT: As adviced I am updating with system information:

Plasma? On Wayland??? :scream:

Go back to Xorg until KDE decides to make Wayland the default…

:crossed_fingers:

This happens regardless if I use wayland OR xorg…

Only now saw that you’re very new here, so:

:+1: Welcome to Manjaro! :+1:

  1. Please read this:
    How to provide good information
and press the three dots below your post and press the :pencil2: to give us more information so we can see what’s really going on.
Now we know the symptom of the disease, but we need some more probing to know where the origin lies…
  2. An inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width would be the minimum required information for us to be able to help you. (Personally Identifiable Information like serial numbers and MAC addresses will be filtered out by the above command)
Also, please copy-paste that output in-between 3 backticks ``` at the beginning and end of the code/text.

:+1:

P.S. If you want to notify me that you did provide this information, please  this message and I’ll come back and have another look.

Hi, thanks for the welcome. I am actually not a new Linux user OR a new manjaro user at that. Have been here for years and using manjaro for quite some. Using Linux since the early 90s, although I am now mostly on macOS and Windows due to work, I still sport Manjaro on my home Desktop and Home laptop.
Somehow, my old forum user was deleted after years of not using it, and I could not revive it, so I created a new one

I updated my post above with the info you requested and am happy to provide ANY and ALL info you need and want and am glad about any help I might recieve.

Found the error.

Just in case anybody else ever stumbles over that problem: It was an environment variable that I myself put into place because of obs and wayland tests in /etc/environment
→ QT_QPA_PLATFORM=xcb obs

my sddm and kde did work without problem, even through reboots. Somehow, something in the update broke, but without this, it works again!

So, I ended up removing obs and yeah, thats that.
