KDE does not use my old nvidia GPU

Greetings everyone,
I’ve been trying to make the whole xsession to use my discrete nvidia gpu, but still no results.
Trying prime-run on my xsession does not make a difference.

:+1: Welcome to Manjaro! :+1:

  1. Please read this:
    How to provide good information
and post some more information so we can see what’s really going on. Now we know the symptom of the disease, but we need some more probing to know where the origin lies…
  2. An inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width would be the minimum required information for us to be able to help you. (Personally Identifiable Information like serial numbers and MAC addresses will be filtered out by the above command)
Also, please copy-paste that output in-between 3 backticks ``` at the beginning and end of the code/text.
  3. Seeing you have an old card, have you tried the 5.4 LTS kernel already?

Regarding your question, I have tried 5.4 kernel and the problem persisted since then

What do you mean it is not using your video card? I see you have one card, and apparently have no issue using your computer to reply here.

I mean while I have my gpu and its driver installed, my laptop relies solely on my integrated intel gpu that comes with the processor.
What lead me into that is the nvidia-smi output, the gpu ram consumption does not change with load. And the constant lag and unability to watch HD videos without getting my pc to heat up is what made me suspect that in the first place.

I don’t see a second graphic processor here. There is only one device. MHWD output also doesn’t show that.

Sure, but what about the symptoms I mentioned?

I don’t know, but from the information I see you do not have a second GPU, and the Nvidia GPU seems to be properly installed and in use.

Now I see something in nvidia-smi, I need to check but that reminds me about another thread. The video card performance level is at P8. Need to check what it means.

//EDIT:

Detailed Description

The GPU performance state APIs are used to get and set various performance levels on a per-GPU basis. P-States are GPU active/executing performance capability and power consumption states.

P-States range from P0 to P15, with P0 being the highest performance/power state, and P15 being the lowest performance/power state. Each P-State maps to a performance level. Not all P-States are available on a given system. The definition of each P-States are currently as follows:

P0/P1 - Maximum 3D performance
P2/P3 - Balanced 3D performance-power
P8 - Basic HD video playback
P10 - DVD playback
P12 - Minimum idle power consumption

//EDIT2: what happens if you plug the power supply, shutdown the computer, and then boot the computer with the power supply plugged in? Do you see the same bad performance?

My battery does not perform well so I always have the power cable plugged in.
Can we conclude that the gpu is stuck at that P-State ?

Nope we can’t based on the information we have but that reminded me this thread Laptop Nvidia Gpu frequency locked to 33mhz after unplugging from power - #2 by omano which is still not closed (the guy didn’t connect to forum since long time).

I don’t own a laptop I only have one under my eyes from time to time for friends and family, so I’m not sure how to troubleshoot your issue.

First explain in more details the exact issues you have.

“constant lag and unability to watch HD videos” is pretty vague (what is lag for you, where, how to reproduce? what type of HD videos, how do you play it?).

Maybe check Nvidia Settings application to see if you can gather relevant information too.

PS: if your CPU is supposed to have an integrated video chip (which in theory it has?), where is it? Did you disable it in the BIOS?

I agree with @Omano: your system is correctly set up, but your card is showing its age and its performance is comparable to a modern Intel card:

Brand Model Rank Benchmark Samples URL
Intel Iris 540 (Mobile Skylake) 306 7.1 4607 UserBenchmark: Intel Iris 540 (Mobile Skylake)
Nvidia GeForce GTX 460M 309 6.96 3183 UserBenchmark: Nvidia GeForce GTX 460M

However, one thing we haven’t checked is the compositor in KDE:

  • Go to System Settings
  • Type composi
  • Click Compositor
  • Ensure the compositor is enabled at startup
  • You might have to choose OpenGL 2.0 instead of 3.0

After changing these settings, test again

:crossed_fingers:

I think you’re right.
I’ve done the Compositor settings just like you showed me, and I’ve tinkered a little bit with tlpui and set the power settings the way it should be to avoid being bottle-necked by the battery.

I compared some games’ performance among windows and Manjaro. Minecraft for example gives up to 90 fps in both Manjaro and windows.

nvidia-smi gives the desired output:

It’s now in P0 and everything is fine. GPU is not crashing nor slow anymore. But I think It’s just getting old.
Another tip to put in mind is to never buy an Intel/Nvidia laptop anymore.
Thanks again everyone.

My bios does not have the option to disable or enable GPU.
The inability to watch HD videos meant I couldn’t watch Youtube videos for example without lag and slow performance. Now that I set my tlpui and compositor settings right, everything is working like it should be.
