On my latest install of Manjaro KDE, I’ve experienced the entire desktop going black except for the currently opened window. This happens at random times. I’ve changed my screen locking and energy saving settings but this doesn’t resolve this situation.
If I log out using ctrl-alt-del (since I can’t see a taskbar) and log back in all is well. This is mildly annoying. What is causing this?

But we can try to track it down, but for that logs are required. So, let’s see 'em.
Please provide the output for:
journalctl --priority=warning..err --no-pager --boot=-1
--priority=warning..err argument limits the output to warnings and errors only;--no-pager formats the output nicely for use here, on the forum;--boot=-1 argument limits the output to log messages from the previous boot. This can be adjusted to -2 for the boot before that, -3 to the boot before that, and so on and so forth.
Tip When posting terminal output, copy the output and paste it here, wrapped in three (3) backticks, before AND after the pasted text. Like this:

This will just cause it to be rendered like this:

If your language isn’t English, please prepend any and all terminal commands with LC_ALL=C. For example:
LC_ALL=C bluetoothctl
This will just cause the terminal output to be in English, making it easier to understand and debug.
Calling this “log out” is a crass misnomer.
What this does is literally killing the entire Xorg session - the whole desktop and everything in it along with it.
logs are needed to perhaps see what lead to this situation - as @Mirdarthos said
The file ~/.xsession-errors might also hold information on that
less ~/.xsession-errors
or
cat ~/.xsession-errors
or:
cat ~/.xsession-errors.old
because a new xsession (when you again log in) will create a new file - the info about the reason of the crash will be in the previously created one

For as long as I have used Plasma - ctrl-alt-delete is opening the logout dialog - no killing anything.
I think it is a clever mapping 
On the other hand - if you are in a TTY - it looks like it is grapped by systemd initiating a systemd reboot command but still a clean reboot.
ok - I tested this on Xfce4 and just assumed the same behavior for the Plasma X session …

No, that’s not true. By default, Plasma uses Ctrl+Alt+Del as a key combination for cleanly logging out, with a confirmation dialog — If you also press the Shift key, then it will bypass the confirmation dialog.
What you are thinking of is Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, which in the more recent X11 versions — I don’t know how it behaves under Wayland — must be pressed twice in a row, and which then does indeed kill the GUI session. 
Correct. Ctrl+Alt+Del is always interpreted by the operating system itself, and the system can even be configured to ignore it, or to have it do something other than reboot.
The only time ever that Ctrl+Alt+Del is interpreted by the machine’s firmware is when GRUB is still on the screen, in which case the firmware will interpret it as a reboot command.
