Interrupted Kernel Update

On November 11th I ran sudo pacman -Syu and mid-download my monitors went black for a moment and I was kicked back to the login screen. After logging in I tried running sudo pacman -Syu again but got an error message. Therefore, I thought it might be best to restart my PC and try again. However, upon boot I was greeted with this error message:

error: file ‘/boot/vmlinuz-5.15-x86_64’ not found.
error: you need to load the kernel first.

After using a flashdrive to boot into chroot I tinkered with the problem for a few hours, and now I’m stuck.
I did manage to get the boot screen to change, though. Now it gets stuck at:

root: clean, 1059582/15269888 files, 33350243/61048752 blocks

So I ran journalctl --boot=-1 --priority=3 --cata through tty with hopes of diagnosing the problem, but frankly, I have no idea what to do. This is what it returned:

systemd-modules-load[367]: Failed to find module ‘nvidia’
systemd-modules-load[367]: Failed to find module ’nvidia-drm’

Now, this is after I messed around and ran a bunch of commands, so I’m not really sure what’s going on anymore. My apologies. However, from what I can tell, this is likely a graphics driver problem. For instance, when running nvidia-smi I get:

NVIDIA-SMI has failed because it couldn’t communicate with the NVIDIA driver.
Make sure that the latest NVIDIA driver is installed and running.

All help is appreciated. Thanks.

Hi @Entinel, and welcome!

As you probably know, that doesn’t tell us much. But, considering:

I’m guessing it might be a hardware problem.

I suggest using the chroot environment, to get the output of:

journalctl --priority=4 --no-pager

and

mhwd-kernel --listinstalled

and

mhwd --list

and

mhwd --listinstalled

and

inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width

…and provide it here. Then we can see what there is to see.

Edit:

:bangbang: Tip: :bangbang:

When posting terminal output, copy the output and paste it here, wrapped in three (3) backticks, before AND after the pasted text. Like this:

```
pasted text
```

Or three (3) tilde signs, like this:

~~~
pasted text
~~~

This will just cause it to be rendered like this:

Sed
sollicitudin dolor
eget nisl elit id
condimentum
arcu erat varius
cursus sem quis eros.

Instead of like this:

Sed sollicitudin dolor eget nisl elit id condimentum arcu erat varius cursus sem quis eros.

Alternatively, paste the text you wish to format as terminal output, select all pasted text, and click the </> button on the taskbar. This will indent the whole pasted section with one TAB, causing it to render the same way as described above.

Thereby increasing legibility thus making it easier for those trying to provide assistance.

For more information, please see:

:bangbang::bangbang: Additionally

If your language isn’t English, please prepend any and all terminal commands with LC_ALL=C. For example:

LC_ALL=C bluetoothctl

This will just cause the terminal output to be in English, making it easier to understand and debug.

What if instead you’d rather read for few hours – there is one “interrupted kernel update” post every couple of days. One was just yesterday I think.

And please don’t say your case is somehow special, because it isn’t. It’s the same thing as other thousand posts. All that is needed is: (in chroot) upgrade the system and reinstall missing kernels.

Also, it would help if you write line by line what you actually did so far.

The first command you asked for takes up too many characters. I’ve reached the limit.

Let’s try limiting it then:

journalctl --boot=-1 --priority=4 --no-pager

I’ve added the --boot= argument and set it to -1 for the previous boot. Feel free to adjust this as necessary.

Ok! Here are the last 3 boots.

journalctl --boot=-1 --priority=4 --no-pager

From what I can see, the

--boot=-3 --priority=4 --no-pager

…one booted normally.

Also from what I can see, the Nvidia driver is the actual problem:

So I think your best bet is:

Hope this helps!

to add to what @Mirdarthos said:

Essentially do
what @zbe said above

chroot and run the update again.

And just to be sure, install one or two, possibly newer, kernels
explicitely
and delete the ones you don’t use, to save you from possibly running into space constraints on the /boot partition.

We don’t know what you mean with:

and it is unlikely to be important to know :grinning:

Just give (text of all the commands and subsequent messages) feedback when you have issues with (re)running the update in chroot.
