Well asince that seems to be the issue if I do it, seems it will become unbootable again. I wish the failsafe was like Windows safe mode.
Why would that be? It was your father’s computer with nouveau that became unbootable after updating.
Well I had the Nvidia driver before this all started.
But that was on Wayland, right?
Yes, I do wonder if X would become unbootable. Does BTRFS make snapshots so if it does become unbootable, I cassn just boot that up. The failsafes were effected also last update.
Probably not. The Nvidia drivers do normally work with X11.
Only if you install snapper or if you manually create a snapshot with timeshift after installing the driver.
problems with nvidia drivers in Manjaro? kinda odd.
So far, the problem here is only anticipated and the worry is about possible issues.
There is fear that something might break on the one hand - but he likes to keep using Manjaro nonetheless on the other. ![]()
I put on Solus yesterday, I may reinstall soon. I should have a OS I can update. So, why is the driver making it unbootable? Even with the updte yesterday.
I don’t know Solus.
From what I read (Wikipedia), it is very similar to Manjaro - in that it will receive updates once a week which may bring with them the very same issues you have with Manjaro right now.
Its package manager, eopkg, is based on the PiSi package management system from Pardus Linux,[3] and it has a semi-rolling release model, with new package updates landing in the stable repository every Friday.
And now you have to learn and use a new package manager as well …
Perhaps not the best alternative choice to get to some period of stability and calm. ![]()
Is that the case?
I do not know the answer to that question.
So, I had just the open source & it still di the break Manjaro thing, so can I update all accept any nvidia stuff? Prob. goinng to Solus just checking.Or just update the apps like Firefox?
If you want an idea on how to proceed - buy yourself an AMD GPU and sell the Nvidia GPU on eBay.
The AMD 9060 could be a valid replacement for your nvidia 3060 and because AMD provides the driver directly to the Linux kernel it is a win-win for you (and your fellow forum members
)
A quick search at https://www.amazon.com/s?k=amd+9060 reveals it is priced around $400
My dad told me with Nvidia it still boots fine.
Solus is good after 1 update, I didn’t install the Nvidia drivers though. Even with open source Manjaro became unbootable still though/
So your system’s unbootable, and you think it’s something to do with the GPU driver.
Some mischievous imp broke all our crystal balls, and the mind reading module is still buggy (all I get is a craving for Monster Munch). ![]()
AFAIK you’re the only one(s) experiencing this - so we can’t even make an educated guess. How do you expect us to know what’s wrong without any information?
So there’s no issue then? ![]()
I don’t mean to sound harsh but…
This is at least the third thread that mentions the same issue - yet they’re all XY problems and you haven’t actually asked for help to fix your issue, nor given any information about the issue which could lead to a solution.
If you have a problem and want support, then please clearly explain what the problem is, and provide information that might help us to help you.
Your Dad uses Solus? Or your Dad uses Manjaro?
What boots just fine?
Honestly, I bought a HP Pavillion desktop back in 2007, I bought a WiFi adapter that didn’t work until I bought a cable to connect to a router down the hall, but after that zero issues with hardware after I ditched a used nvidia bought to play Crysis on Windows.
Going from that relatively high powered nVidia to an i3-4130 with LOW integrated graphics power brought me a fantastic smooth desktop experience.
Now I traded up to a Ryzen 5600G, with enough graphics to play basic games - and again, zero issues.
So really, if you want to be happy, dump the nVidia. Some folks are lucky, but you are a disaster with constant problems over the years - and always related to nVidia and displays.
I remember this question:
Well, like anything else, it’s very easy to break - you can pour coffee on your motherboard - that’ll do the trick.
nVidia doesn’t care at all about it’s customers - it’s famous for it. It also primarily seeks to make money making GPU’s that work well with AI. They focus only on proprietary platforms - and are more focussed on leveraging their gaming GPU’S to serve as testbeds for AI research…
It is a toxic company, and it is poisoning your life… and as with any kind of cancer, surgery is the answer.
Even if you don’t believe this - and it’s true many folks use nVidia and have no issues… - my observations are that since you asked the question ‘Is Manjaro easy to break’ - it really is very easy to break.
Cut it out.
Find out how much you can get for the nVidia; it was the single biggest upgrade I ever made - to completely do away with any kind of graphics card and go for APU’s.
If I get a windfall, I’d buy anything BUT nVidia… I don’t care what the reviews or press, or redditors or youtubers say.
Once bitten, twice shy.
FWIW.: I have an Nvidia GTX 960, and I’ve never had trouble booting.
But then, I haven’t customized my display settings as much. Or at all really.

Even though the tone of this thread has become somewhat unpleasant, I can only agree with the advice repeatedly given so far — and which I too have already given @Edward78 on another thread.
Nick, rip out that Nvidia card, put it up for sale on eBay, and buy yourself a nice AMD graphics adapter. You’ll be much happier.
I am planing to get a Battlemage 7xx when they come, not sure which. I hope Intel is going to stay around.
If you’re going to be waiting for the very newest, then you’re also going to be inviting the problem that it might not yet be supported in the mainline kernels, not to mention LTS kernels.
Just look for a middle-of-the-road AMD graphics card. It’ll get you a long way already, and it’ll be fairly affordable.
