Installer fails with calamares crash

Hi guys,

I’m trying to install latest Manjaro Gnome from bootable USB on my acer acer vn7-591g but as soon as I finish filling out the installer settings and pass the summary screen the installer crashes without any additional prompt.

  • I’ve tried with two different USB drives and used rufus/balena/ventoy to prepare installation USBs - neither version worked.
  • Tried ISOs of 22.0-230101 and 22.0-221224
  • Fast startup is disabled, don’t have intel optane drive.
  • Tried installing manjaro as a dual-boot on a separate partition but I’ve also tried formatting everything and doing a clean install.

Looking at the journalctl output it seems that calamares crashes and that causes the installer window to disappear.

Does anyone have more ideas what else I could do to be able to finally install and enjoy Manjaro? :slight_smile: Thanks in advance!

journalctl -p3 output

Did you check the hash of the iso file you downloaded?

I think I’m having the same problem on Manjaro Xfce installing to a ThinkPad T61, crash after summary screen in calamares

Occasionally I’ll get a different result, Xorg crashes and I have to log back in

I managed to get the install going past this point, once, then accidentally ctrl-c’d the relevant terminal window (doh)

I’ve checked the ISO hash, it’s fine, and this install USB worked a treat on my ThinkPad T420s. I was wondering if it had something to do with MBR boot given this laptop is old enough to not support UEFI, but OPs laptop looks modern in this sense

Hi, thanks for the replies.

@Jim.B Yes, I’ve checked the hash thinking it might have been corrupted iso but it was matching the reference hash.

@spephton in my case I consistently get the same results, tried installing multiple times via GUI and the result is always calamares crash after summary screen. I’m using UEFI as well.

Hey,

I have a similar issue when I try to install Manjaro Gnome on my Surface Pro 6. For me, it’s OOM error 'tho.

I’m seeing the same on an older Dell XPS 15. I have booted off a USB stick (manjaro-gnome-22.0.1-minimal-230124-linux61.iso) in UEFI mode (with secure boot disabled). I have tried with open source and proprietary drivers and various partition combinations, but consistently get the behaviour described by OP (calamares crash stacktrace looks the same too).

I confirmed that the ISO was written properly to the USB stick,

$ sudo head -c $(stat -c '%s' manjaro-gnome-22.0.1-minimal-230124-linux61.iso) /dev/sdc | sha1sum
325320c0fd014fffccfa9d48db616b81e85c4ad0  -
$ cat manjaro-gnome-22.0.1-minimal-230124-linux61.iso.sha1
325320c0fd014fffccfa9d48db616b81e85c4ad0  manjaro-gnome-22.0.1-minimal-230124-linux61.iso

Did you ever manage to get around this? I’m about to try installing from the “full” installation (as opposed to the “minimal” one).

I have the same problem.
I use Manjaro Linux on a handful of different DELL laptops, but also a DELL desktop (Optiplex).
Now I am trying to install Manjaro on another DELL Optiplex, but Calamares crash.
I have used the same DVD in all of them, so there is no fault in the DVD itself.
Can Manjaro be installed without Calamares?

/ Hans Gatu

I tried to install a different Linux distro, that also use Calamares installer, based on Debian.
It installed without any issues, so maybe there is a bug in Manjaro’s Calamares code.
