Installation does not start

Hello,
I have installed Manjaro with KDE. Apparently the installation process has gone well. But when I reboot I get the GRUB 2.0 command line and it stays there. If I press the ALT key during the boot, the EFI Boot symbol appears and stays there. If I press it, the GRUB command line appears again.
All this means that I cannot start Manjaro.
Help!!!

Could you boot a Live Session, open a terminal and type manjaro-chroot -a and then type 1?

Then please post the results of the command here (as code with like me):

inxi -Fazy
test -d /sys/firmware/efi && echo efi || echo bios
sudo parted -l

I think grub is not installed correctly. Sometimes it is needed to completely disable compatibility mode
with legacy BIOS in UEFI.

Thanks

hi Megavolt
First, a lot of thanks for your help.

1/
manjaro-chroot -a -->
grub-probe: error: cannot find a GRUB drive for /dev/sda1. Check your device.map
==> Mounting (ManjaroLinux) [/dev/nvme0n1p2]
ā€“> mount: [/mnt]
ā€“> mount: [mnt/boot/efi]

You see, no option for typing ā€œ1ā€.

2/
The other outputs of the commands you asked for I canā€™t send them because it tells me that I canā€™t include links in the post. I donā€™t understand anything.

Copy and paste it here (open a browser in the live session, please no pictures [why? because pictures are not suitable for searching]) like that:

  1. type ```
  2. Press enter
  3. Copy paste the code here
  4. Press enter
  5. type ```

And please not all at onceā€¦ line by line please.

So you have not mention that you system is a iMac. There you need to do extra steps because of the UEFI as i knowā€¦ but i have never used a Mac, so can just research it.

Here is a little guide what could help:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/IMac_Aluminum

This might be the same issue:

The wiki you recommend is about sound.
On the other hand, the computer is an iMac, but I donā€™t have a Mac installed. I deleted it when I installed Linux Mint and now I wanted to try with Manjaro (and I deleted Linux Mint too). At the moment I only have Manjaro installed, but it wonā€™t start.

Nope. Read moreā€¦

Quote:

rEFIt Re-sync

When partitioning is finished you must restart the iMac & re-sync your partitions with rEFIt, which is quick & easy: You choose to start the partitioning tool in the rEFIt boot-menu & follow the very simple instructions there. rEFIt may prefer to have partitions in numerical order on the drive, i.e. sda1, sda2, sda3, sda4, sda5, sda6 ā€¦ & not shuffled. This is unconfirmed, any feedback on the subject will be appreciated.

Then reboot & hold down the C key, or wait as I do for the rEFIt boot-menu to appear & choose to boot the Arch install CD.

This is not necessary when booting through EFI.

  1. I do not understand anything about the rEFit Re-sync quote (I am not a computer scientist).

  2. If I start the computer normally, I get the grub 2.04 command line (where I donā€™t know what to do).

  3. If I start pressing the C key, nothing happens and after a while the grub command line appears again.

  4. If I start pressing the ALT key, a single EFI boot symbol appears and if I click on it, the grub command line appears again.

  5. If I boot with the Manjaro installation pendrive in a USB port and press the ALT key, I get two EFI boot symbols. If I select the second one, I get a menu with several options: tz, keytable, lang, driver, Boot: Manjaro.x86_64 kde (which I guess is the pendrive) and a last option ā€œdetect EFI Boot loadersā€. If I select this last option, I get the following:

(hd3.gpt1)/efi/ubuntu/shimx64.efi
(hd3.gpt1)/efi/ubuntu/grubx64.efi
(hd3.gpt1)/efi/Boot/bootx64.efi
(hd3.gpt1)/efi/Boot/grubx64.efi
(hd5.gpt1)/efi/Manjaro/grubx64.efi
/hd5.gpt1)/efi/boot/bootx64.efi

If I click on (hd5.gpt1)/efi/Manjaro/grubx64.efi, Manjaro starts correctly. But obviously, it is not acceptable that you have to follow this tedious process every time you start the computer. The other options I have not selected because I am afraid.

After reading a lot, i came to the conclusion that using the native uefi bootloader is the common way of booting a Linux on Mac, without the grub bootloader.

But here are some links:

That is a method to use the EFI directly (bootloader):
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/EFISTUB

That is a boot manager for EFISTUB:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/REFInd

This is a tutorial for the bootloader (Mac):
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/User:Elinux/MacBook_Pro_12,1#Bootloader

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mac#Using_the_native_Apple_bootloader_with_GRUB

Does ubuntu have secure boot enabled?

(Manjaro does not support that by default, there are extra steps needed)

I doubt that the problem is related to iMac. Before trying to install Manjaro, I installed Linux Mint and Kubuntu, and they worked fine for me. As you said at the beginning, I think it is more a Grub problem.

Please, I need your help.

is it an external disk ?

No. I summarize the problem

Manjaro does not start. When I turn on the computer, it stops at the Grub command line.
The only way I can start it is:

  1. by plugging the installation pendrive into a usb port
  2. When starting the computer, press the ALT key
  3. Choose one of the two EFI BOOT symbols that appear to me (there is no typical hard drive symbol)
  4. On the ā€œWelcome to Manjaroā€ screen, where we have the UTC settings, keytable, language, driver, boot=Manjaro.x86_64.xfce which is the pendrive, and "Detect EFI Bootloaders, which is the option I choose.
  5. I get a list:
  • (hd2,gpt1)/efi/ubuntu/shimx.efi
  • (hd2,gpt1)/efi/ubuntu/grubx64.efi
  • (hd2,gpt1)/efi/Boot/Bootx64.efi
  • (hd2,gpt1)/efi/Boot/grubx64.efi
  • (hd5,gpt1)/efi/Manjaro/grubx64.efi
  • (hd5,gpt1)/efi/boot/bootx64.efi

I choose Manjaroā€™s (I think the last one is also valid) and so I start Manjaro.

Obviously, this procedure is not acceptable.
I need help.
Thank you.

this procedure is acceptable ,
my macpro2008 show disk EFI on boot with Alt , then i can select Disk with linux.
the disk has been formatted GPT by apple tools then installed grub after. ( required 200Mo or 300Mo )
