I lost my operating system

After the update, I lost my operating system. It starts up, but then stops and I’m left with a black screen, unable to get out of this situation.

Hi @bardo

Your post has been moved from the Testing Update announcement thread to a dedicated topic.

Please avoid posting in categories that have nothing to with your issue; especially, not the Update Announcement threads.

Instead, choose an appropriate category when first creating a topic; or when editing the tile; and choose from the dropdown of Support category selections.

In order to help others help, more information is needed;

Please provide system information as described (below) for a start, and also tell how you performed the update; whether it was via the terminal or a TTY; which package manager you used; any errors you might have noticed during the update; and anything else you think might be relevant.

With that information, I’m sure someone will help when they are able. In the meantime, checking the Known Issues and Solutions section of the respectibe Update announcement is highly recommended.

Please rename the topic title to better reflect your issue. :eyes:

Regards.

Welcome to the Manjaro community

As a new or infrequent forum user, please take some time to familiarise yourself with Forum requirements, and the many ways to use the forum to your benefit:

Update Announcements

The Update Announcements contain important information and a Known Issues and Solutions section that should generally be checked before posting a request for support.

System Information

While information from *-fetch type apps might be fine for someone wishing to buy your computer, for Support purposes it’s better to ask your system directly; :eyes:

Output of the inxi command with appropriate parameters will achieve this (naturally, formatted according to forum guidelines) and will generally be more useful for those wishing to help:

inxi --filter --verbosity=8

or the short form:

inxi -zv8

Be prepared to provide output from other commands whenever asked. It’s equally important to provide as much actionable information as possible in your first post, rather than simply indicating there is a problem.

I can’t log into the operating system, so all I can say is what I remember: I ignored the problem with nvidia utils 530 and updated with "sudo pacman -Syu. Everything installed. I restarted the system and was left with a black screen.
Right now I’m typing from Ubuntu.
Thank you.

Thank you.

… let me help you with the formatting:

three backticks (```) in a separate line before your output
and three backticks in a separate line at the end

or highlight all your output and click on this symbol </> in the top row of the edit window

I’ll do this for you now.

you have in the links above on how to chroot… boot into manjaro live usb, make sure you are connected to the internet, open terminal and chroot:
manjaro-chroot -a
rerun update:
pacman-mirrors -f 5 && pacman -Syyu
if there are errors post the output here, if there are no errors and you are up to date, post output from:
ldconfig - (this should return nothing, if there are more than lets say 20 lines, dont bother to post, just let me know)
ls /etc/X11/* /etc/modprobe.d
pacman -Qm
mhwd -l && mhwd -li

and use formatting…

In some case Nvidia drivers need the following workaround in /etc/environment to launch properly:

MESA_LOADER_DRIVER_OVERRIDE=zink

It doesn’t work, it doesn’t find anything

Boot from a Manjaro live ISO - the command:
manjaro-chroot is only available there - not in Ubuntu

If the -a (automatic) variant doesn’t work, you can assemble the file system yourself
by mounting the / partition
to /mnt for example
and then the EFI partition to it to /mnt/boot/efi
and then
manjaro-chroot /mnt

Your nvme drive has got a GPT partition scheme
Your hdd’s are MBR
That could be a problem.

And, for what it’s worth:

ID-4: /media/rui/0ee3c73e-a415-4901-aca0-1d17f553ada2 raw-size: 322.11 GiB
    size: 316.86 GiB (98.37%) used: 301.5 GiB (95.2%) fs: ext4 dev: /dev/sda1

is completely full.

tune2fs -m0 /dev/sda1 could alleviate that situation a bit

Blockquote I already entered live Manjaro. I already gave the command manjaro-chroot -a, it searched for grub in sdc, but my drive is nvme0n1p2, so it can’t find anything.

the automatism doesn’t work for you, apparently

so you need to tell it where the / (root) and the EFI is - like I described

what is that output… how many manjaros do you have installed?
this is proper formatting:
use:

```
your output here
```

just like its described above…

or:

~~~
Don’t use “Blockquote”.
Use “Preformatted text” for posting terminal output.
… let me help you with the formatting:
I have done it once again for you
three backticks (```) in a separate line before your output
and three backticks in a separate line at the end
or highlight all your output and click on this symbol </> in the top row of the edit window
I have old drives and old manjaros that no longer work.
I know that the manjaro that stopped working is on the nvme1n1p5 partition.
Instructions given might have been unclear; use ``` or ~~~ only for code or command output; your text comments can be typed normally, without any boxes.
Corrected for you. No charge.
