I am having sudden reboots

Hi everyone,

I’m experiencing sudden and unwanted reboots that started once i tried to upgrade my kernel from 6.10.5-1 to 6.11.0rc3-2. The first time it occurred i immediately downgraded the kernel back to the 6.10 version, but the issue persisted.

Here’s my system info:

At the moment i have removed all other kernels from my system, except for 6.10.5-1. I can’t really tell now if the issue was resolved by this, and i have no clue of what could be causing this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE: I am still having this issue with both 6.1 and 6.6 kernels, although not as frequently as i was before. Searching for this topic on google, i found several posts on this forum that described similar issues, with computer freezing or rebooting without any notice. I read somewhere on a official Arch website that this was an issue that ryzen cpus had, particularly the 5000 series (i’m running on a 7000). I’m really frustrated by this, because changing kernels worked for some days, and now i’m stuck with the same problem again :face_with_spiral_eyes:.
As always, any kind of help is appreciated, and i’d like to thank in advance anyone that might try to help me solve this issue.

Hi @ricvigi,

Thank you for the information. Unfortunately the provided inxi output can’t really tell us why it’s rebooting, for that we needz logz, but you can provide 'em:

journalctl --priority=warning..crit --no-pager --boot=-1

Where:

  • The --priority=warning..err argument limits the output to warnings and errors only;
  • and the --no-pager formats the output nicely for use here, on the forum;
  • the --boot=-1 argument limits the output to log messages from the previous boot. This can be adjusted to -2 for the boot before that, -3 to the boot before that, and so on and so forth.

Provide them in the same format you provided your ``inxi` output, and we can see what there is to see.

Hi @Mirdarthos,

Thank you for the reply. As of now, i have downgraded to a 6.9 kernel (more precisely 6.9.0-4-rt5-MANJARO), and i did not encounter any sudden reboots since then (let’s hope it stays like this). journalctl --priority=warning..crit --no-pager --boot=-1 gives the following (very long) output:

You could in fact I think you should, try kernel version 6.6, which is the latest LTS or 6.1, which is the latest SLTS.

The latest is only recommended if it contains a specific feature you require.

Edit:

Also, is there a specific reason you use the real-time kernel?

I had big issues with kernels below 6.6.5 (included, if i remember well), such that i couldn’t use my laptop’s keyboard and mousepad and i was forced to use external ones, so i’m trying to stick with the latest ones (where this bug is fixed) to avoid this issue (as far as i know this bug occurs only with my particular laptop model).

Also there is no particular reason, as far as i know, for which i should run a real-time kernel. I’ve been using it for some hours now, and i’m not having any issues, but at the same time i’m not really keen into switching kernel again at the moment (you can imagine why :D).

Did you notice anything that could give some hints on why i’m experiencing these sudden reboots in the logs i posted previously?

Ah, I understand yes.

Although, seeing as you can have multiple kernels installed, you can always install 6.1, boot into it to test, and if it doesn’t work reboot back into your current one. The fix might have been back-ported to the others, especially 6.1, since it is to be maintained for a looong time still.

More information on the kernel installation here:

Unfortunately no, I haven’t.

I’ll most definitely try!

Thank you guys for being so helpful

You might benefit from configuring some swap space:

A realtime kernel is used only in rare cases where they are actually needed – occasionally in professional audio production, for example, and even then, rarely – I suggest using the standard 6.9.x kernel on a typical desktop/laptop machine.

If i read your system info right, you are currently using X11

Since you have AMD GPU, you may want to try out Wayland.

Edit:
Do you experience sudden reboots in combination with demanding task?

In relation to a temp problem maybe?

Of course, the chances are low that this is really the case for you… because when your other Kernels running fine (besides input problems), it shouldn’t make sense right?

But who knows… the newer Kernel could do some optimisation around your system, that your CPU gain the chance for a higher possible workload… could be in relation for higher temps or more needed Vcore.

Of course, this advanced stuff should be only seen as option, when there is not a better solution.

Only one issue with that:

It does currently still show up with the mhwd command, though.
Also, this:

sensors should tell, probably need to install lm-sensors first.

I mean he posted some sensor data in his main topic… but idk if this was while idling or if he was watching a youtube stream for example then it would be okayish.

For only browsing (idle) temps this looks a little bid to warm… a normal idle system should have 35° from my experience.

Mine is currently:

$ sensors

Adapter: ISA adapter
Package id 0: +49.0 C (high = +100.0 C, crit = +100.0 C)
Core 0: +46.0 C (high = +100.0 C, crit = +100.0 C)
Core 1: +45.0 C (high = +100.0 C, crit = +100.0 C)

BAT1-acpi-0
Adapter: ACPI interface

thinkpad-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
fan1: 2479 RPM
CPU: +49.0 C

… but it’s a laptop, on the quilt next to me so not all that well ventilated.

uff and your fan has really 2480 RPM right now and your system is doing nothing besides Firefox Forum usage?

How hot is your Room?

Currently a comparatively cool 26.6°C; it’s usually in the 30s. I’ve had it exceed 50°C a few times.

I have one of those laptop “tables” with cushion on the underside for use on a lap, which I’d largely forgotten about; suppose I ought to dust it off and start using it again.

There’s also some other programs open on other desktops, which might have some effect.

If this are your idle temps, you better don’t do Video Encoding with that device

2450 RPM should be really noisy. Maybe you have soon sudden reboots too

I actually can’t hear it running. It only kicks in from time to time. I’d probably do stuff like video encoding down the Pub anyway, on a table. Although :cat2: isn’t distracting me, for a change!

Addendum: I just moved the machine over a bit and the fan stopped, temps staying about the same. Was probably blocking an inlet.

What I’d suggest to the OP is to have a Terminal open showing temps e.g.

watch -n5 sensors

Years back, I would have issues with an old Dell machine overheating just when messing with xscreensaver! New thermal paste helped, but it still ran hot.

The maximum TDP of the AMD Ryzen 3 7320U is 15 watts, but this can be reduced to 8 watts by the hardware manufacturer. The maximum operating temperature before the processor automatically clocks down is 100 degrees Celsius.

It’s AMD. You can cook on those things.

As mentioned, the EOL and real-time kernel are definitely the things that stand out. My Manjaro installs (using Nvidia GPUs) didn’t even boot the update that made 6.9 EOL.

TDP is same as mine (an Intel® Core™ i5-4300U). It rarely gets much above ambient plus 20-30°C with (for me) normal use.

Most of the time, Intel CPUs run a lot cooler.

My Ryzen 9 5950X will operate at about 91C under load. (And that’s after I did many things to help keep it cooler.)
