HP victus linux support?

Dear manjaro users,

Any chance somebody has acquired an HP victus with the radeon 5500m recently who could report on the hardware compatibility or report any issues running manjaro? Can’t find much on reddit etc.

@nam1962
I noticed you had fixable issues with the realtek card… Any other issues or does everything else work smoothly eg. suspend /wake, hdmi out etc.

A hardware report on this laptop would be greatly appreciated…

Hi @socrates
I have one for my future pro activity and am setting one for a friend.

Everything seems functional, didn’t test HDMI yet.

Sound is not @ par with W$11, even with easyeffects (didn’t test jamesDSP yet)

Wifi card is really good and surprisingly gets 5ghz on a longer distance than 2.4 (it’s the opposite on my old Asus & on my old iPhone)

Didn’t test hybrid GPU as I don’t now how to ! :stuck_out_tongue:

Debian feels much faster than Manjaro

The debian one is fully on backports

Both are dual boot, it comes with W10, you immediately have the submissiveness process that doesn’t allow anything if you don’t give credentials. even if you refuse, they do install crapware, force upgrade to W11 and… don’t update it !
When you want to install firefox, it tells you it’s useless, offers you opera before ff and tons of crappy links, but not mozilla.org!
The most ridiculous thing is that even though you say no, it installs Mcafee everywhere (3 different things that take several minutes to uninstall and I’m sure there are still traces)
And once you’ve uninstalled, you have to activate W$ Defender by hand!

I may add a 2To SSD (seems it’s possible even if ports are supposed to carry only 1To)

I also added a 16Go swapfile:

echo vm.swappiness=5 | sudo tee -a /etc/sysctl.d/99-sysctl.conf
echo vm.vfs_cache_pressure=50 | sudo tee -a /etc/sysctl.d/99-sysctl.conf
sudo sysctl -p /etc/sysctl.d/99-sysctl.conf
sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/swapfile count=16384 bs=1MiB
sudo chmod 600 /swapfile
sudo mkswap /swapfile
sudo swapon /swapfile
echo '/swapfile none swap sw 0 0' | sudo tee -a /etc/fstab

Thank you very much for the update!

It’s good to know that all the basics seem to work (mostly) out of the box.

Given dedicated AMD graphics on laptops are fairly hard to find, I’m surprised there’s not more interest in/reports about these models in the community. I’m keen to avoid any Nvidia induced headaches so it’s nice to know that the alternative looks promising.

I read that the two nvme slots differ, only the one on the right of the machine has 4 pcie lanes, the other only has 2; so will be slower.
In my case I rarely use windows so if it was me I’d probably leave windows alone on its own drive (and move this to the slower slot), and do a clean install of linux on the other drive.

Best of luck with your new hardware!

W$ vs Linux:

  • W$ preinstalled → 1 hour to have a workable, up to date environment now you start to install basic soft (office, mail client, real browser…) minimum 60Go for W11

  • Linux first install : 5 minutes to install, 5 more to update, comes with all basic software.

  • Computer start : W$11 is already 5 to ten times slower ! :face_with_monocle:
