How do I disable error sounds in Thunar & Lutris?

Hello everyone. I have been using Manjaro for the last few years and am very happy with this distro. However, something that has always bothered me is that annoying sound when you press the delete key too hard in the search bars. It also happens when I take a screenshot (with keyboard shortcuts) or press the wrong combination of keys, and it has given me more than one scare.

I would like this feature to be removed in future versions or, failing that, for help in disabling it.

Sorry, not quite sure what you’re referring to. What sound? What search bars?

Whatever you’re referring to is most likely something that’s provided by the DE (Desktop Environment) you’re using; i.e.; KDE Plasma, GNOME, Xfce, Cinnamon, etc–not Manjaro itself.

Please help us help you:

I think you’re refereeing to the BIOS error beep.

You have not specified which desktop environment you’re using, and it’s also not set in your profile — which says “Other OS”.

What you are referring to is called the system bell, and its settings have nothing to do with Manjaro as a distribution.

Whether the system bell is enabled or not depends on the developers of the respective desktop environments and window managers. It can however usually be disabled via the desktop environment’s settings application — in Plasma and Xfce, it is called System Settings, but I don’t know what GNOME calls it.

In a tty environment, the system bell commonly uses the chassis’ “PC speaker” (if present), and it may (or may not) be possible to disable that in the UEFI or BIOS settings — many people physically disconnect the speaker from the motherboard, and many newer systems don’t even have a built-in speaker anymore.

Section 2.2 explains how to make that permanent.
(I thought it already was like that by default - but maybe older installations did not have this)

I apologize for the confusion, compounded by the fact that my English is bad and I am using DeepL. The sound occurs, for example, in programs such as the file manager (Thunar) and Lutris. The terminal and web browser are not affected by this feature.

If you go to either of them, click on the search bar, and press the key to delete text, (it must be empty for this to happen), a “BOOT” sound is played, and no, it’s not from the BIOS, as that sounds louder and shorter (if you hold it down, it plays several times). I use i3.

I doubt it’s a feature exclusive to my PC or my BIOS, as I’ve also seen it in some of Zatiel’s videos when he uses Manjaro, but it sounds softer, probably due to the quality of the speakers.

Thank you for your patience and the welcome.

It worked! I just needed to restart and turn up the volume. Thank you for your help.
