Having issue with no display on login greeter or tty

I have been having an incredibly frustrating issue where my computer will boot normally, but when it gets to the login window there is simply no display. I can blindly type in my password and hit enter and it will load my desktop and everything will be fine, however it’s a bit more challenging if another user wants to log in.

Once logged in the display drivers work fine.

The issue began after I changed my setup from dual monitors to single. Even though the single monitor I’m using now was always the primary, for a while it was sending the login dialogue to the other monitor and eventually stopped showing anything on the primary until I was logged in.

I was on linux 6.6, then did a timeshift to three weeks ago which corrected the problem, but it reverted a number of critical updates which after bringing the system back up to date the problem returned.

Attempting to ignore updates that could’ve potentially been causing the problem resulted in more severe issues that prevented the desktop from loading at all.

At a certain point timeshift was no longer helping and TTY started having this problem too. I’ve spent almost 24 continuous hours trying to correct this problem with some assistance from chat gpt but to no avail.

The current status of my computer is the desktop is working and can be loaded by blindly entering the password, but TTY will not load at all, it just gives no output until I switch back to the GUI.

I asked ChatGPT to generate a summary of everything that I have tried so far including log outputs and system specs so I can share as much info as possible here. See below for that:

EDIT: I just discovered that when waking the computer from a suspended state it is able to display the lock screen without issue.

ChatGPT - Display Issue Summary

System Summary

Distro: Manjaro Linux (Cinnamon Edition)
Display Manager: LightDM (lightdm-slick-greeter) → briefly switched to SDDM for testing
Kernel History:

  • Working: 6.1 LTS
  • Problematic: 6.6 series
  • Currently installed: 6.12 LTS
GPU: NVIDIA proprietary driver (video-nvidia 2024.05.03)
    Boot Mode: UEFI
    Root partition: /dev/nvme0n1p2 (ext4)
Timeshift: BTRFS snapshots used; last confirmed working snapshot restored successfully.
Problem Description

After a system update (sudo pacman -Syu) the LightDM greeter no longer displays video output.
Symptoms:

  • Monitor reports no signal when LightDM or any TTY (Ctrl + Alt + Fx) should appear.
  • Entering password blindly logs into the desktop successfully.
  • Once in the desktop, display functions normally.
  • The issue reproduces across kernels 6.6 and 6.12.
  • TTYs are also affected — blank screen/no signal, although keyboard input is accepted.
  • The GPU otherwise works fine inside the desktop session (3D acceleration, games, etc.).
Key Logs

/var/log/lightdm/xrandr-before.log and xrandr-after.log
Show single monitor connected via HDMI-0 at 3840×2160 @ 59.94 Hz — no DP outputs active.
No configuration differences before/after greeter start.

Actions Attempted

Kernel & Driver

  • Reverted via Timeshift → issue resolved temporarily.
  • Updating system again reintroduced the issue.
  • Downgraded NVIDIA stack initially (blocked ALA access on stable).
  • Tried kernel 6.1, 6.6, and 6.12 LTS; issue persists across all once updated.

Display Manager

  • Verified /etc/lightdm/lightdm.confgreeter-session=lightdm-slick-greeter.
  • Confirmed session-wrapper=/etc/lightdm/Xsession.
  • Tested adding:
    • logind-check-graphical=true → no effect.
    • Custom greeter-setup-script forcing xrandr --output HDMI-0 --mode 3840x2160 --rate 59.94 → no effect.
  • Switched temporarily to SDDM → system hung at greeter (no signal + input freeze).
    • Reverted symlink /etc/systemd/system/display-manager.service back to LightDM.

TTY / Recovery

  • TTYs (Ctrl + Alt + Fx) yield black screen/no signal even though the system remains responsive.
  • Only accessible via blind login or chroot from live USB.
  • Timeshift restores functional system, confirming display stack breakage is software-level.

Miscellaneous

  • Flatpak and AUR updates completed afterward — no change.
  • mhwd -li reports video-nvidia 2024.05.03 installed, no conflicting drivers.
  • lightdm --show-config confirms correct greeter/session wrapper paths.
  • Display works flawlessly once inside Cinnamon session.
Hypothesis

Something in the LightDM greeter or NVIDIA driver initialization fails during VT switch from Plymouth (or kernel console) to the X11 greeter.
TTYs also black out, suggesting a KMS / VT / framebuffer handoff bug introduced in newer NVIDIA 580 series or Xorg 21.1.15 + firmware 20250917.
Kernel 6.1 + old NVIDIA worked; any newer driver breaks both greeter and TTY video.

Information Needed / Help Requested
  1. Has anyone encountered no-signal on greeter + TTY with NVIDIA 580 drivers on Manjaro 6.1/6.12?
  2. Is there a known regression involving LightDM + nvidia-drm.modeset=1 or console handoff?
  3. What’s the recommended way to force LightDM to reinitialize display after VT handoff?
  4. Should nvidia-drm.modeset=0 or a specific kernel parameter be applied?
  5. Any confirmed workarounds beyond downgrading NVIDIA drivers (since ALA is disabled)?

Can you please explain how ChatGPT was able to collect the required information for such a report? Also, please provide output of

inxi -zv8

I explained the situation I was in to Chatgpt, it offered suggestions, I tried different ones and told it what worked and what didn’t, I gave it the log files and error reports for interpretations, so by the end of the conversation it had a pretty good idea of the process I went through, what I tried, what I had discovered and of course the drivers and other specs I was working with.

As for your request here is the output:

Why not install 570xx drivers instead of the latest 580xx?

Have you tried in a TTY

sudo systemctl enable sddm.service

Please provide output of

sudo journalctl -u sddm

Also provide your SDDM’s configuration file’s settings.

Switching to a standard theme also could be helpful.

It could be also worth trying to create a new user and see if the issue persists with the new user as well.

In my case, I have deleted everything in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/* Reboot and it works.
but 00-keyboard.conf You are gonna still need.

So if you want to try that, you could backup all does files, and reboot.
If everything works now, you could bring back every single file one by one after each reboot, and let us know which files break the login process.

sudo mkdir /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d_backup
sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/* /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d_backup

I did try enabling the sddm service, and when I got to the login screen the system completely froze (still with no display), even the power button did not respond and I had to do a forced shutdown

$ sudo journalctl -u sddm

Is this situation a known issue with 580xx? I did do a timeshift that brought me back to 550xx at one point and it resolved the issue, but that left me with a number of packages that wouldn’t run unless I updated them and trying to update my packages without updating the drivers caused a number of dependency conflicts that prevented Manjaro from booting past GRUB. Admittedly that was probably user error though

A post was split to a new topic: No display on screen attached to second GPU

I gave that a try, I deleted everything in the X11 folder except the xinit folder and nothing changed

Not specifically, as far as I’m aware.

However, to quote my late Father;
“Just because the thing is new doesn’t mean it’s good”.

570xx has at least had some time to prove itself – in your position I’d give the suggestion from @philm some serious consideration:

Frankly I’m a little bit nervous to try downgrading the driver as I already tried that once and ended up somehow breaking everything (including timeshift) to the point where I had to manually repair the system from a live usb. Part of the problem is that a symptom of this driver issue is that TTY is also not working, which means if Manjaro fails to load I basically have to repair it from a live usb. I’ll try it again if that’s the best chance I have of fixing this issue, but I want to make sure I’m doing it right. I read through this thread and it looked like the recommendation was to run sudo manjaro-downgrade nvidia, select the package I want (which in my case would be 575.64.05) and after running that I should sudo mkinitcpio -P then sudo update-grub and reboot.

My understanding however was that this utility did not include dependencies in the downgrade process, so wouldn’t there be other packages I would also need to downgrade?

I think before installing it will ask for the old versions. But this is exactly the problem with downgrading and why it leads to an unsupported state. The old nvidia can need old dependency X., but something else can need the newer version ox X. It can very quickly become very messy.

Did you disable LightDM before enabling SDDM? If not, that was likely the reason for your crash.

Looking through your notes (above) it seems you brought most of that grief upon yourself – blindly following ChatGPT “suggestions” and random posts, with no clear idea of what you were doing – but, rest assured, you’re not the only one.

Booting with a Manjaro Installer USB and entering a chroot environment is an established method of performing maintenance outside of the running system. This should never be considered a last resort, but a necessary tool; users are encouraged to always have a very recent (if not the latest) USB on hand.

I’m not convinced that it is a driver issue, but then, I made a conscious decision over a decade ago to use AMD graphics exclusively, which means I’m rather out of touch with Nvidia of late. That their drivers are still giving grief to a major portion of Linux users is no surprise, however.

I seems like you have taken the wrong message away from that topic. If you had read much past the first few posts, you might have noticed several wanings about the procedures suggested;

More importantly, you missed the warnings from a Manjaro Team member:

And regarding official drivers downloaded directly from Nvidia;

If I recall, when installing another driver there were prompt(s) to replace/uninstall the previous – again, I haven’t used Nvidia in some time, so treat this with caution, and seek clarification.

The following Wiki page typically has all the information needed to install the best available drivers; rather obvious by it’s absence, you’ll notice that “downgrading” isn’t mentioned at all, for good reason:

There is also this – noticed in a recent Update announcement topic:

I presume this choice is given during install when a supported Nvidia GPU is used; and/or when updated versions of these series are made available through a normal update session.

I’m not aware of whether a new procedure exists for changing the driver series, post install. This might be something others could expand on.

Did you know that “NEW” is also an acronym for “Never Ever Worked”?

Yes - two competing display managers are never good - just one of the two should be active/enabled.

I do now.

Adding this as being possibly related (the OP describes “no display”):

I’m uncertain that this would still be relevant in Stable branch or if the OP might nonetheless still be affected by it.

Yes I did

I was aware that CHAT GPT could cause more problems, however the reason I went to it was because I had a problem that involved very specific circumstances and I couldn’t find any other threads where people had the same problem as me with the same symptoms. Despite Chat GPT sometimes giving bad advice, it did seem to be very effective as a diagnostic tool -interpereting log files, explaining what different commands do and what is actually happening behind the scenes when things aren’t working. Believe it or not I did actually learn a lot from Chat GPT about how to use different tools that previously I didn’t know how to use or didn’t know existed. This is all part of the learning curve for me.

If not a driver issue then what could it be? I have had a number of different issues with my pc over the years and the vast majority of the time it fell back to a bad nvidia driver update, so it doesn’t surprise me that this would also be a driver issue. I have used nvidia gpus because they are more familiar to me (maybe their naming schemes are just slightly easier to follow lol) but with the number of issues I have had with them it might be time to switch to amd for my next update

I do not believe this is the case, usually when going through the updates it just gives you the most recent version. I believe to install a different version you would have to explicitly install it and then blacklist the higher version to prevent it from updating to that when you install the rest of the updates. I do understand that downgrading drivers is not a recommended thing to do, however at this point it doesn’t seem like I have many other options. The only other Idea I have at this point is to try timeshift again and attempt to update everything other than the drivers. I’m not sure if that restore point I used last time is still working however, and I don’t know which updates to blacklist so that I can do this without breaking the system again. Last time I tried this it broke a lot of my applications, Firefox completely reset to default settings and somehow the backups didn’t work, I had to reinstall all my plugins and reconfigure their settings, reinstall all my bookmarks on my toolbar, reconfigure my preferences and find my themes all over again. I’d like to avoid having to do that again, but if it means fixing my computer then I would do it

Not being an Nvidia user, I can neither confirm or deny, but if it doesn’t work that way, perhaps it should. :man_shrugging:

Often, one of the problems with downgrading, blacklisting, and repeatedly restoring snapshots only to repeat the same process over and over again, is that we can be left in what’s generally referred to as an unsupported partial upgrade state where more problems might be caused than those one is attempting to fix.

This comment is why I suspect there might be other contributing factors;

You have sddm in the mix.

The following was listed in a recent Known Issues and Solutions section of an Update announcement:

SDDM may crash with Nvidia drivers

There was also the following in the Unstable or Testing branch.

It’s not mentioned whether you might have switched to another branch temporarily in an attempt to solve your issue; just as it’s uncertain whether this is still relevant in Stable, but the symptoms seem to potentially fit:

Graphical issues on older hardware (Black screen, Flickering) due to mesa 25.2.x update

Each major version, eg 570, 580, is a separate package, as such you only get updates to that version. You don’t get switched to a new major version during an update (at least not while the currently installed one is still in the repo).

For ease, from now on I’ll just call each major version a driver.

You use mhwd to install a driver, and when updates are available for that driver then it will be updated with the rest of the system.

mhwd -l # list available drivers for your device
mhwd -li # show installed driver
sudo mhwd -r pci video-nvidia # remove old driver
sudo mhwd -i pci video-nvidia-570xx # install new driver

mhwd basically just automates the process of manually installing or removing a driver. If you prefer a GUI, then you can use the Manjaro Settings Manager to do it.

The commands above are in the “Configure Graphics Cards” wiki article that @soundofthunder linked to earlier in the thread.
