Guidance on Orphan / Alien (AUR)

Hi Team,
Just went through a lengthy process of standing up my Manjaro from 25.0.7 back up to 26.1 and I wanted to check now in terms of best practices in evaluating the remaining Orphans and AUR’s and making sure I build the right items and remove the ones no longer useful. I would say after the exercise my computer is up and running, a bit leaner without all the massive AUR libraries and I’m not getting any errors (currently)

Hello, I am more a ‘simple’ user of manjaro (in mabox version) and have no deep knowledge in the core system. My hardware is AMD Ryzen 5 5600G with Radeon Graphics. I know some of this will need to assess whether or not I really need, like for example the Steam Native… I can’t recall where I read that in order to have some USB drive accessibility you need to have the Steam Native Installed, but I dont appear to be getting the same issues as I was before.

Anyway, appreciate the thoughts or guidance. Just super happy that everything is up, Network & BlueRay no longer coflicting with plugins and operating as expected. Thanks!

The second list - orphans - should generally be save to remove. Luckily a lot of stuff is in both lists, so that will make the aur list shorter.
From the first, aur list, you probably want to keep the programs, like zoom. In this list you generally have to go and decide one by one. If stuff is available both as repo and aur you should generally prefer the repo version, i suspect you have a couple of those but that has to be checked individually. I see some known deprecated junk there like the old openssl and reiserfs and gtk2, but i cannot answer for every package. Here the pamac gui can help a little - when you open the foreign view there, some packages will have aur below them. Some will not have anything - neither repo nor aur - those can go and are 100% deprecated.

Be very careful about removing that one, as removing it will also remove installed firmware packages that are listed as its dependencies. The quickest/safest option is to install the linux-firmware package, which has the same dependencies as linux-firmware-meta.

If you don’t want to install the linux-firmware package, then you should mark the various firmware packages installed on your system as “Explicitly Installed” before removing linux-firmware-meta:

Manjaro previously had linux-firmware package overlays to support older kernels. That is no longer necessary, so they were dropped in favor of the original Arch packages. linux-firmware is just a meta package to pull in all the firmware packages, so it can either be installed manually to replace linux-firmware-meta or the latter can be removed. To mark the package(s) you want to keep as explicitly installed, use the Mark as explicitly installed button in Add/Remove Software or via CLI: sudo…

Just to be clear, team still recommends to stay on 6.18 Kernel correct with the LTS Supprt?

Electron 35 is one of the things i am sure about can go - the current version is 41.
Otherwise, always show also the command you run.
Cause i don’t quite understand how you come with 2 different lists of orphans. Or is the one including aur and the other excluding aur? If so than take the longer list of course since you want now to clean both repo junk an aur junk.

You also have a lot of build time dependencies - those will be redounloaded if needed. I would have said mark this or that as explicit under other circumstances but given the general mess you have try to clean as much as possible at this point.

Thanks for the insight on Electron35 , that one took a very long time to build so glad to hear that it is no longer required. And to clarify on the list, no, the intent was to show the full and holistic list of both AURs and Repos.

Just a bit anxious around removing all the orphans since it appeared to create some problems. I’m feeling like if I remove Steam Native the downstream effect will be very significant and then I can pamac upgrade -a and let the remaining build, check rebuild and then re-check Aliens/Orphans and then take pamac -o.

What about qt5 location, is this one really needed either? I built this out for the Chrome back library but I can’t recall whether it was supporting a framework of Applications or just providing developing capable coding for future applications

I am no steam competent, sorry.
Once again, removing orphans by the very definition, cannot break anything on a running system. With the notable exception of the firmware and kernel situation, which is kinda self-made problem in manjaro - some meta packages were created to serve the noobs wanting a kitchen appliance, but it turned out noobs are capable of breaking even those… reminds me of the

joke for the broken titanium ball

Aliens abducted a Frenchman, an American and a Bulgarian, locked each of them in a completely empty 3x3x3 meter cubicle and gave each of them three titanium balls the size of an egg. Then they announced:

• Gentlemen, this is a test of ingenuity. We give you six hours to come up with the most ingenious way possible to use these balls. Whichever one of you did the best, we will release him back, take his results as a benchmark, and we will examine the other two down to the cellular level to understand why they did not do so well!
  Six hours passed and they went to the Frenchman first. The man juggled the balls skillfully, singing “La Marseillaise” at the top of his lungs.
• Good! - said the aliens and went to the American. He not only juggled and sang, but also danced step.
• Bravo! - said the aliens and went to the Bulgarian’s room. Halfway through, they were stopped by an astonished guy from their group:

So generally with the above exception which is technically not even an exception but wrong usage, the worst that can happen removing orphans is they will be redownloaded next time they are needed (on the other hand, not removing them could block a future update). There is no way removing those leads to non-booting or similar (with the above exceptions). Imagine you install a gui program, that is a frontend for a cli program, for example for editing images, which it pulls as a dependency. Then you become the image expert and use only the cli tool every day. You uninstall the gui and forget to mark the cli explicitly installed. After a year you decide to clean the orphans. Won’t you then see/recognize the cli tool you use every day in this list? And even if you miss it, won’t you notice this the next day you try to use it? Then you will reinstall, this time it will be explicit and not orphan and end of saga.

This is why cleaning out one’s orphans right after updating the system is the only proper way to go. That way, there won’t be any orphans left by the time one performs the next system update.

Orphans are by definition packages which are not needed anymore. Even the various firmware packages won’t be orphans unless one removes the linux-firmware meta-package without marking the needed individual firmware packages as explicitly installed, and linux-firmware itself is not an orphan, because it’s an explicitly installed package — even though, as I wrote, it’s an empty meta-package, which simply pulls in the individual firmware packages as dependencies.

Ergo, the removal of orphaned packages in and of itself cannot break anything.

Ended up removing Electron35 and Steam Native and then I did pamac update -a to catch the rest, afterwords there were no more orphans in the list so really glad I did upgrades instead of just removing orphans as those “un-needed” actually formed the basis of my upgrade list and should not just get discarded.

The build out for QT5 Webegine took quite a bit of time but finished successfully.

They will always upade as long they are in the aur and there are new versions. That doesn’t mean they are really needed for something on that particular machine. That is for you to decide.

Using aur that extensively it is also recommended to switch to unstable branch.

Generally, unless you have a specific need for a non-LTS kernel – for example, if it enables functionality that you need – then there is no pressing need to upgrade to a later kernel – they will typically be short-lived, in any case, sometimes only existing for a month before they reach EOL.

True, all good points and definitely will utilize the qt5 prebuilds in the future, this one took a bit but was manageable (only about 4-5 hours). Getting rid of Electron helped reduced the build time for sure.

And just knowing my journey through my builds and all the little tool/tweaks/builds that I’ve picked up a long a way, I side with caution and doing the upgrade.

And definitely noted that AUR dialogues essentially are off main branch and discusssed there, but hopefully this thread may have been a help to others who had to go through a similar journey!
