Hello all,
I’ve been dabbling with Linux for a few years at beginner level and have decided that I want to really expand my knowledge of Linux by installing and sticking with Manjaro. I installed it on my Razer Blade 15 Mid 2021 Base model laptop and ran into some issues in what I expect to be graphics drivers related (I have an nVidia graphics card).
I posted this problem on a reddit-post and was directed to bring this here, where better assistance will be available. I am determined to resolve this and support Manjaro for years to come. Troubleshooting, fixing, and stabilizing a system for daily driving is my intention.
I have an nVidia 3070 mobile GPU in my laptop and initially aimed to see how well the computer would function with the default linux driver. All seems fine except when attempting to sleep/suspend/shut-down/reboot the computer, the laptop freezes as terminal commands and processes cease and close out. I found online that using the correct drivers may fix this problem.
When the recommended nVidia driver (video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime) is installed, I noticed that VLC, or any video playback softwares won’t play videos. Upon attempting to launch any video, the attempt crashes (the window in-application quickly opens and closes). Further, I am able to sleep/reboot/shut down the laptop about 50% of the time without having to hard-power-off the machine.
Any other nVidia drivers causes the laptop to be unable to boot into the desktop environment, freezing on the initial terminal-launch screen (I apologize I don’t have the proper terminology).
My attempts that fail to suspend/sleep/etc the machine were performed both via icons in the desktop environment as well as via terminal. Successful outcomes are independent from whether I use the terminal or not, but only have a chance to succeed with this graphics driver installed. I am using KDE Plasma.
My aim is to find a way to stabilize my Manjaro build so that I can power-on/power-off/sleep my device without graphics drivers crashing as well as, obviously, be able to play videos and use video playback software.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I will post any terminal output requested. I currently am reverted to no graphics driver installed (using linux default). Thanks so much in advance!
