Graphics Driver Issues Likely; Potentially Power Issue

Hello all,

I’ve been dabbling with Linux for a few years at beginner level and have decided that I want to really expand my knowledge of Linux by installing and sticking with Manjaro. I installed it on my Razer Blade 15 Mid 2021 Base model laptop and ran into some issues in what I expect to be graphics drivers related (I have an nVidia graphics card).

I posted this problem on a reddit-post and was directed to bring this here, where better assistance will be available. I am determined to resolve this and support Manjaro for years to come. Troubleshooting, fixing, and stabilizing a system for daily driving is my intention.

I have an nVidia 3070 mobile GPU in my laptop and initially aimed to see how well the computer would function with the default linux driver. All seems fine except when attempting to sleep/suspend/shut-down/reboot the computer, the laptop freezes as terminal commands and processes cease and close out. I found online that using the correct drivers may fix this problem.

When the recommended nVidia driver (video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime) is installed, I noticed that VLC, or any video playback softwares won’t play videos. Upon attempting to launch any video, the attempt crashes (the window in-application quickly opens and closes). Further, I am able to sleep/reboot/shut down the laptop about 50% of the time without having to hard-power-off the machine.

Any other nVidia drivers causes the laptop to be unable to boot into the desktop environment, freezing on the initial terminal-launch screen (I apologize I don’t have the proper terminology).

My attempts that fail to suspend/sleep/etc the machine were performed both via icons in the desktop environment as well as via terminal. Successful outcomes are independent from whether I use the terminal or not, but only have a chance to succeed with this graphics driver installed. I am using KDE Plasma.

My aim is to find a way to stabilize my Manjaro build so that I can power-on/power-off/sleep my device without graphics drivers crashing as well as, obviously, be able to play videos and use video playback software.

Any help is greatly appreciated. I will post any terminal output requested. I currently am reverted to no graphics driver installed (using linux default). Thanks so much in advance!

Moderator edit: In the future, please use proper formatting: [HowTo] Post command output and file content as formatted text

did you tried with a different kernel? for example the 5.19, install it from system settings/kernel, reboot;
try updating your bios…
go to system settings/file search and uncheck all the options, click apply, this will disable baloo, which can cause freezes - although not the one you are describing;
provide logs, since you have also freezes without nvidia:
journalctl -b0 -p4 --no-pager

Thanks for getting back to me! I did try with 5.19: without nvidia drivers installed, it boots up but still crashes upon restart/shutdown attempts. With nvidia drivers installed, it won’t even boot into 5.19. I also tried downgrading the kernel. With 5.10, it behaved the same as 5.15. I will provide logs momentarily.

Alright so lets start here:

Symptoms present themselves differently in this case depending on a few factors. Below is the current result though.

With linux graphics drivers I did sudo reboot now and it rebooted without a problem. Then I manually selected “sleep” in KDE Plasma. Then I clicked the power button to wake the system. The mouse wouldn’t work after waking the system from sleep, which is common for me with linux graphics drivers.

The keyboard and graphics were still working though, which was also expected and is typical in this scenario. I entered my password and opened the terminal with keyboard commands. I ran your requested commands. I couldn’t select the output, so I took a screenshot.

You’ll have to remove the spaces from this link:
ht tps://im gur
com/a/vc3Q5Xc

it looks liks this razer blade 15 has some issues on linux, youre not the only one… there are some workarounds, but who knows if they will work, so we got some testing ahead…
first open this file:
kate /etc/environment
and add there this line:
QT_LOGGING_RULES='*=false'
save the file - this will disable the useless kwin/qt logs

second; open this file:
kate /etc/default/grub
and in this line: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT - inside the quotes add this parameter:
ibt=off
dont remove anything from there, just add it to the existing parameters, save the file, update grub with:
sudo update-grub
the ibt parameter should fix you not being able to boot with newer kernels:

third; create this file:
kate /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
and put there this line:
blacklist i2c_nvidia_gpu
save the file and run this command:
sudo mkinitcpio -P
now reboot and test
this should help with the resume/suspend issues

and again provide logs, but not a screenshot, copy the logs here, if your mouse … etc freezes, just reboot and provide logs:
journalctl -b0 -p4 --no-pager

Alright! Again, thanks so much for helping out. We’ve got some progress. I followed your instructions and the following is the current state of things.

Good Things:

  1. I now am on Linux Kernel 5.19 with nVidia drivers and can boot with this setup.
  2. I can sudo shutdown now, sudo reboot now, and use shutdown/reboot commands without freezing up.
  3. The system starts up and shuts down with blazing speed and now hold ups.

Problems Still Existing:

  1. With nVidia drivers installed, I cannot play video files still.
  2. My mouse is still disabled after entering “sleep” an requires a sudo reboot now/hard reboot to solve it.
  3. New problem: my refresh rate is now locked at 60hz (screen supports up to 165hz; was able to select before)

The output for journalctl -b0 -p4 --no-pager is now:

journalctl -b0 -p4 --no-pager                                                                               ✔

what drivers do you have installed? post output from:
mhwd -li

why do you use commands to reboot/shutdown? clicking the icons dont work?
with mouse you mean external usb mouse, or the touchpad?
the video files work when you dont have installed nvidia drivers?
did you checked if there is a bios update available?
are you dual booting with windows?

you have there some xdg portal issues, so lets reinstall it:

sudo pacman -S xdg-desktop-portal xdg-desktop-portal-kde

add another parameter to your grub:
kate /etc/default/grub
and in this line: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT - inside the quotes add this parameter:
button.lid_init_state=open
dont remove anything from there, just add it to the existing parameters, save the file, update grub with:
sudo update-grub
reboot and test

The icons caused freezes sometimes before following your suggestions. Now they all work normally. When my mousepad freezes after sleeping, I must use commands to reboot/shut down if I want to avoid hard resetting because I can’t navigate to the icons when the mousepad isn’t working.

With mouse you mean external usb mouse, or the touchpad?
When I sleep the system and wake it, the mousepad doesn’t function at all. When I have an external mouse plugged in, I am able to use the mouse to use the mouse pointer after waking the system from sleep without needing a reboot, but the mousepad doesn’t recover until after I perform a reboot.

The video files work when you dont have installed nvidia drivers?
Correct.

Did you checked if there is a bios update available?
The most recent BIOS version is installed.

Are you dual booting with windows?
Yes. I have Win11 on a 2TB nVME SSD and Manjaro installed on a 1TB nVME SSD alongside it.

__

I just reinstalled xdg portal and added the parameter to GRUB and updated it
as instructed.

The updated GRUB parameter line now reads:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash i8042.reset i8042.nomux i8042.nopnp i8042.noloop ibt=off button.lid_init_state=open"

thats what i was wondering, so its the mousepad thats not working, not the external mouse…
so after you added button.lid_init_state=open parameter, does the mouspad works after resuming from suspend?

so now that you have installed the proper drivers lets install optimus, so open this file:
kate /etc/sddm.conf
and put a # before the line starting with DisplayCommand and the one starting with DisplayStopCommand, so that they look like this:
#DisplayCommand
#DisplayStopCommand
you may not have these display options in the conf, so proceed with install:
pamac install optimus-manager optimus-manager-plasma
reboot and test the video… if it doesnt work, right click on the optimus manager tray icon, click settings, and under ‘optimus’ select the startup mode to ‘integrated’, click OK, reboot and test if the video is working using only intel gpu, report back

and also check in windows if startup is disabled

With the button.lid_init_state=open parameter added, the mousepad issue still exists.

Windows startup is not disabled.

The two display commands did exist for me in kate /etc/sddm.conf and I have excluded them.

I ran pamac install optimus-manager optimus-manager-plasma and the majority of the installation went through, but there was one error during the installation regarding python2 stating that one or more PGP signature couldn’t be verified but I believe that I fixed this.

I am still locked at 60hz refresh rate, BUT videos ARE now able to play. So we’ve got more progress!

so disable fast startup in windows …
also remove the: button.lid_init_state=open parameter from grub
also these parameters: i8042.reset i8042.nomux i8042.nopnp i8042.noloop are probably related to the touchpad, if they didnt helped you, you can remove them too… save the grub, update grub: sudo update-grub

now did you select the startup opdtion in optimus to integrated? if no, do it, reboot and test if you can change the 60hz rate … in system settings/display and monitor, the refresh rate is shown 60 max?

dont understand why it wanted to install python2, none of the optimus packages depend on it, and also python2 was dropped… post output from:
pacman -Qs python2

Fast startup is now disabled in Win11 and I removed the extraneous parameters from GRUB and updated it.

I set the startup option in optimus to integrated and rebooted the system. I am still locked at 60hz. The drop-down menu to select hz isn’t there anymore (it hasn’t been since yesterday though) and 60hz is the only option.

I also selected nvidia dedicated graphics as well as hybrid graphics to see if they might make any difference but the drop-down menu for hz was still not available and was still locked at 60hz.

The output for pacman -Qs python2:

pacman -Qs python2  :heavy_check_mark:
local/python2 2.7.18-5
A high-level scripting language

so you tried switching from optimus tray to nvidia/hybrid and it didnt worked with the refresh rate?

uninstall python2, it was dropped from the repos:
pamac remove python2

now add another parameter to grub:
usbcore.autosuspend=-1
save the grub, update grub: sudo update-grub
this hopefully fixes the touchpad not working after resuming from suspend;
reboot and suspend and test if the touchpad is working after resuming… if not run these commands:
sudo modprobe -r i2c_hid
sudo modprobe i2c_hid
and test if it works

provide also output from:
xrandr -q
to check if other refresh rates are detected
and use formatting, for the ouptuts

Alright, I removed python2 and added usb.core.autosuspend=-1 to grub, then updated it.

This didn’t fix the issue, so I tried the next 2 commands.

The first one returned this error:

sudo modprobe -r i2c_hid                                                                                     ✔
[sudo] password for quinn:
modprobe: FATAL: Module i2c_hid is in use.

The second command didn’t return anything, but the command was accepted by the terminal.

Unfortunately, neither commands helped.

I did notice that when I move my fingers frantically along the mousepad when it is “frozen” though, occasionally the pointer will move like 10 pixels or so in a jittery motion every 3000-5000 pixels (blindly estimating) that the mousepad should have moved it. It’s as if the mousepad wants to accept input but only passes through 1% of the input every X interval. This appears to be replicated independent of grub parameters and terminal commands attempted.

the xrandr doesnt show any other refresh rate except 60hz, which was also what other reported, that it stays locked on 60hz…

Yeah, I was surprised that it allowed me to set 165hz originally but it isn’t available now. To be honest, fixing the hz is the lowest priority to me anyway. It would be nice if I had it, but I only plan on gaming on Win11 and most things I might be doing on Linux won’t provide a benefit for having above 60hz anyway.

We’ve made good progress so far and I’m really thankful you’ve continued to work with me through these annoying little issues.

It would be especially nice if this damn mousepad would behave more efficiently though. We shall see!

Output from lsmod | grep i2c_hid:

so suspend pc again, and after resume run this:
sudo modprobe -r i2c_hid_acpi i2c_hid
sudo modporbe i2c_hid
and see if it restores the mousepad…

also do you have a option in your bios to switch to only nvidia gpu?

Those two commands didn’t give me any success.

I just checked my BIOS and its options are relatively limited. There aren’t any graphics options available. Some settings that I have set related to power is secure boot, fast boot, and CSM support disabled. I also have “Intel Speed Step” enabled with “Turbo Mode” enabled (located in CPU - Power Management Control).

Not sure if any of this helps but they’re the only options in my BIOS that are performance-ish related.

ok, so lets try some parameters, edit again the grub file like above and inside the quotes add these parameters:
intremap=off acpi_osi=! acpi_osi='Windows 2020'
save the grub, update grub:
sudo update-grub
reboot and test the mousepad… and connect external mouse and if it doesnt work, try logging out, and see if that restores the touchpad, so that you dont waste time with rebooting

if for whatever reasons you have problem booting with these parameters, in the grub menu press ‘E’, locate the parameters and remove them

Sorry for the delayed response.

This GRUB config caused the mousepad not to work at all on boot.

I put the system to sleep and woke it up to test if the mousepad would work, but it still didn’t.

The external mouse was still functioning though. I removed these commands from the grub config and updated grub.

The mousepad is back to functioning as it was before this trial.

ok, so try this parameter instead:
acpi_osi=Linux
save the grub, update grub: sudo update-grub
reboot and test refresh rate and mousepad
if for whatever reasons you have problem booting with this parameter, in the grub menu press ‘E’, locate the parameter and remove it

if it doesnt work, remove the parameter and install the latest 6.0 kernel from system settings, reboot and test with it
if you have problems booting with this 6.0 kernel, in the grub menu/advanced options select the 5.19 kernel - not the fallback one, the normal one - and boot with it and uninstall the 6.0
