Genymotion fail to run - virtualbox 7

Arch and Manjaro are different.
This is not even expected to work.

Genymotion, more likely.

and VirtualBox is involved?

I’m not sure what is supposed to be happening here.

Hi Nachlese, thank you for your reply. Yes its Genymotion, ive fix the missing letter. Thank you for pointing it out. Genymotion is used to emulate android. It requires virtualbox 6 to run.

My problem is virtualbox downgrade related. How does one successfully downgrade virtualbox without getting the Kernel Driver Not Installed (rc=-1908) error from virtualbox itself (if you try to run a VM from within Virtualbox only) eg this is not a genymotion error but a virtualbox one

Safe to say i tried a lot of things before i decided to turn to you for help

The virtualbox-host-modules version needs to match the virtualbox-version
and, since these are kernel modules
they are specific for each kernel that you have/use.

Since there are no host-modules available to simply install for that version of virtualbox that you want to use
you need to build them yourself.

This should be possible with dkms
There is a package virtualbox-host-dkms - but it is, of course, now at version 7
Perhaps you can get the older one - or modify the PKGBUILD to work with the 6.1 version of virtualbox.

I find that very strange … that a software needs a specific version of virtualized environment to work.

I have edited to topic title to reflect the actual issue with the custom package Genymotion.

Please bear in mind that AUR requires Manjaro unstable branch.

As I cannot reproduce - I am fairly convinced it is a local issue.

The current AUR PKGBUILD (which is 3.3.1-1)

pamac build genymotion

Our systems is from an endless line of possible combinations.

As I cannot reproduce the issue on a Manjaro system - I have to deduce it has something to do with your hardware/software combination.

Ignoring a package in pacman.conf - is not recommended - it is creating your recent issue - and is what we call an xyproblem - your fix caused a new problem which you then try to solve without solving the initial issue.

Manjaro does not support custom packages from AUR.

Genymotion is a custom package so unsupported.

If the genymotion support tells you that virtualbox 7 is not supported - then you need to use a supported system but obviously it is a mere excuse as I have just demonstrated that genimotion does work on my system.

Manjaro repo supplies VirtualBox 7 - there is nothing you can do to change that.

There is no easily adaptable process to get what you want - simply because what you want is unsupported on Manjaro.

You have that package in your “ignore” list (pacman configuration option - you added this at some point in time)

and you seem to be missing the kernel headers for your installed kernels - they are necessary to build kernel modules

anything from AUR requires you to have installed all the tools to build stuff
install the package group “base-devel” if you have not yet done so

virtualbox-host-dkms is in IgnorePkg/IgnoreGroup. Install anyway? [Y/n] y

I think this was added in my attempt to downgrade the package earlier. How will this cause a problem if i reply yes install anyway?

I don’t know.
Remove it from that list anyway - since you in fact do not actually want to ignore it …

because it will be ignored.

Ok thank you. Can i ask for help to downgrade virtualbox and linux515-virtualbox-host-modules without getting the Kernel Driver Not Installed (rc=-1908) error from virtualbox itself?

How can i clear my ignore list?

I’d have to look that up.
So can you.
You added it - you should know where you did add that.

When you use the downgrade command it adds it to the ignore list

How do i do this properly. Is modprobe vboxdrv and a system reboot enough?

Is a successful virtualbox downgrade in Manjaro possible?
