GDM service not starting automatically after boot

Hello there,

I am quite new to Linux, therefore apologies in advance in case of stupid questions.

I have the following issue: I updated the packages last week and since then, gdm service is not starting automatically upon booting up. Of course, I can use tty and start it by myself (systemctl start gdm.service), but how can I make this work automatically?

I already enabled the service with systemctl enable gdm.service, but that doesn’t help. Is there anyone that can help me debug this, as I have no idea where to go?

Thanks everyone in advance!

Hi and welcome to the forum :wave:

To start I would find out why the service is not started:
$ systemctl status gdm

If that does not give a clue
$ journalctl --boot --priority=err

Would output the errors during the current boot process.

Check the update threads for common issues after a update (2nd post always had solutions) start here

If you need help with interpreting the output please use the </> button in the editor to format the output correctly.

What happens if you switch TTYs. Does GDM start on its own if you switch to TTY2/TTY1?

If that’s the case, you might need to enable kernel modesetting either via kernel parameter or EKMS.

Check this out:

EDIT: Please provide further information about your hardware as per below:

Hello again :wave:

I’m sorry for getting back on this so late, I just didn’t have time to play with this.

I followed both of your advises, this is what I’ve figured out:
@El_Brujo GDM actually does start on its own if I switch to TTY1.

This is the GDM status directly after boot:

systemctl status gdm.service

And the status from the journalctl:

journalctl --boot --priority=err

I will take a look at the other topics meanwhile… hopefully there is a solution without messing with Kernel though :sweat_smile:

Thanks a lot!

Hi @acerinth

No worries. Thanks for taking some time to report back to us! :+1:

I see that you have an optimus laptop.

Most likely, you may fix that issue by doing Early KMS as explained in ArchWiki.

EDIT: You just need to do it for the Intel GPU.

Good luck dealing with that!

Let us know if you need anything else from here. :smiley:
