GDM Not correctly autostarting

Hello!

I’m running a fresh install of Manjaro Gnome. When I boot, I get a black screen. After going into the terminal mode, I can run startx or systemctl restart gdm and everything works, but I have to go into the terminal mode to do that… Any ideas what seems to be the problem?

I ran journalctl and I think I found a culprit:

Okt 12 18:25:41 yecine-xps159560 /usr/lib/gdm-x-session[673]: (EE) Failed to load module "nouveau" (module does not exist, 0)

There are similar lines for nv, intel, fbdev.
Any idea on what I should do?

That is normal as you have the nVidia proprietary driver installed, so nouveau fails to load.

What is the output of

mhwd --listinstalled
journalctl --system --boot=0 | tail --lines=25

after a reboot and before you start the GUI, please?

Here it is:
mhwd --listinstalled

  • Execute:

    sudo mhwd --remove pci video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-450xx-prime
    sudo mhwd --remove pci video-modesetting
    sudo mhwd --install pci video-nvidia-440xx #yes, 440!
    sudo reboot

  • If that would still give you a black screen, the nVidia is not hooked up to your internal screen (only the Intel is) so:

    sudo mhwd --remove pci video-nvidia-440xx
    sudo mhwd --install pci  video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-440xx-prime
    sudo reboot

and please report back?

Thank you for the references, the weird thing is that it is happening on a fresh install! I didn’t tinker with the drivers in any way

Still, stuck on the boot

Are you using Architect??? (I’m all out of bright ideas by now)

:sob:

Nope, plain old Manjaro :sweat_smile: I also tried to follow a guide specific to dell-xps (only specifying kernel parameters)… I’m seriously thinking of wiping it out and going bare-Arch. Do you have something specific I should pay attention to if I go that way?

I’m on Manjaro because I don’t want to deal with the head-ache of installing Arch from scratch (Manjaro Architect is like Arch from scratch, but with the advantages of not having to compile everything yourself)

:man_shrugging:

Just wait until someone more knowledgeable than me shows up.

When you are in the graphical env what is the output of:

lspci -nnk | grep -i vga -A3 | grep 'in use'

Also did you modify anything in your Xorg config files?
I see to many critical errors in the log so thats why

One of the important ones.

  3.415] (EE) Device(s) detected, but none match those in the config file.

So there is something wrong with the config.

No, that’s Gentoo. :wink:

The output is

Kernel driver in use: i915

I didn’t mess with the configs, I just added some kernel parameters.
I need the nVidia card to be usable, because I will almost always have an external screen plugged in, and as far as I’m aware, that only goes through the nVidia GPU

Oke was just wondering.

I’ve seen the line.
Is there any specific reason you use

acpi_osi=Linux acpi_osi=! acpi_osi='Windows 2009'

Instead of only?

acpi_osi=! acpi_osi="Windows 2009"

The last should be enough in most cases, so why this line?

In this i am just wondering and learning.

Still just a thought but
Does adding nomodeset to the kernel line help?

or only using acpi_osi=! acpi_osi="Windows 2009"

No reason, I’m trying to follow this

So I removed acpi_osi=Linux and added nomodeset and still nothing

If you did not did not set anything in a config regarding this the only thing I can think of is that something in the kernel lines bites. Just not sure what I am oke with kernels but not that good.

Guess it will be a trail and error thing.

In tjhe kernel line does this help anything?

random.trust_cpu=on

Still I wonder about your xorg config file.

So what is your /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/90-mhwd.conf look like?

The kernel parameter didn’t change anything, the file only contains a comment

and there are no more files in xorg.conf.d?
I guess there is also no etc/X11/xorg.conf or is there?

since your disabled mhwd does it help when you enable it?
so perhaps removing

systemd.mask=mhwd.live.service

Helps… unless there is a specific reason you set this like boot problems without it?

Also do you want to get your nvidia working or just work in with intel graphics?
Also please remove the nomodeset because intel needs it if you use that driver.

next follow the input of Fabby agian
