Fresh install freezing constantly

I recently installed Manjaro and have been having issues with it freezing completely. REISUB or REISUO do not work despite the sysrq key being enabled manually every time on restart, and the only way to get it to shut off from what I can tell is holding the power button. This issue has persisted on multiple different kernels.

It will be much more clear if you expand those couple words into a detailed and definite description, making more users to understand the issue you meet and to be able to support your case.
As for me I completely didn’t understand what, under which circumstances, after which your actions are hangs up.

Which ISO name did you use to install Manjaro OS copy?

Did you check a hash sum after an ISO image file download to greatly reduce a chance of getting damaged file during download?

Also, does a terminal sessions Ctrl+Alt+<any number from 1 to 7> works (changes the picture on the display) after hangs?

If you did not setup many many settings already, may be mean time to try a fresh (today’s) ISOs (Manjaro 21.1.3 Pahvo released!)?

Yeah sure thing. Sorry about being a bit vague.

When it freezes I am unable to do anything. The mouse wont move, it doesn’t react to key presses(as I said REISUB and REISUO do not work when frozen, although they do work when it is not frozen) and just stays on the screen it froze on.

I don’t know what causes it as it is completely random(although it usually freezes after the computer being on for a few minutes) and will sometimes not freeze at all(although that happening is incredibly rare). It seems to freeze the most often when opening a new tab or new browser window, but again it mostly seems more random than anything.

Pressing Ctrl+Alt+A number does nothing when it’s frozen.

I can try installing the new ISO as soon as I get home to see if that fixes the issue, as I’ve only had it installed for a few days and the issues with freezing has caused me to leave it mostly alone.

Currently I have no other ideas to try, except to try to load LiveCD session and to look into journalctl messages of several boots after changing the root with the manjaro-chroot.

Check RAM for errors (MemTest86 - Official Site of the x86 and ARM Memory Testing Tool) it take long time to run from one to several hours, depends on CPU, RAM speed and RAM size.

Hi i’m new to the forum, Manjaro, and Linux in general. I am experiencing a similar issue on both of my computers, but it’s not exactly constantly happening. One uses an intel cpu with nvidia gpu with nvidia proprietary driver and 32 GB ram. The other is a laptop with Ryzen 3000 cpu and integrated graphics and 8GB of ram. I believe the issue for me has something to do with ram because it mostly happens to me on the laptop rather than the desktop, but it may also be because it’s ryzen 3000. I have also tried different kernels. Another test I did was to do a ram intensive task that used up all of the memory, and both systems froze. I tried using swap, but I could never get it to stop happening. I haven’t messed around too much with the swappiness value.

OK I see you are using Intel graphics UHD-620, try changing the graphics from video-linux to video-modesetting/video-vesa

sudo mhwd -r pci video-linux
sudo mhwd -i pci video-modesetting

or do this in GUI interface “Manjaro setttings manager”

The problem is maybe with the RTL8821CE wireless driver, I have the same problem on my laptop since kernel 5.11 or maybe 5.12… the problem still persist till kernel 5.14

Try to install LTS kernel 5.10, it works for me, disable wireless and connect with a cable and install it

EDIT: If it freezes with wireless disabled it’s a different problem :slight_smile:

I figured it out over the weekend and this was the issue. My wireless driver was causing a kernel panic that would cause the laptop to freeze. I solved by changing my kernel to 5.10, disabling the wireless connection, and then updating the driver with the following console commands
sudo pacman -Syyu
sudo pacman -S dkms linux510-headers
pamac build rtl8821ce-dkms-git
