Freezing issues in kernel 6.15 and 6.16

Hello!

Since I bought the Zenbook S14 and install Manjaro on it, I’m facing complete random freezes. I can’t even Ctrl + PrtSc + REISUB on it and also journalctl --boot=-1 --no-pager shows no relevant info. Is there someone having the same issue?

Things that I’ve already tried:

  1. Set the CPU0 to idle (as suggested in GitHub - dantmnf/zenbook-s14-linux: ASUS Zenbook S 14 (UX5406))
  2. Use different kernel versions (6.15 and 6.16rc, freezes happens on both)
  3. Use only Performance mode
  4. sysctl "kernel.io_uring_disabled = 2"
  5. BIOS upgrade

I’m also following some threads related to the subject but didn’t found any permanent solution:

Welcome to Manjaro! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

  1. Please read the information behind this link. It will help you to post necessary information.
  1. Please press the 3 dots below your post and then press the :pencil2:
  • If you give us information about your system, we can see what we’re talking about and make better suggestions.
  • You can do this by using inxi -czv8 as root in a terminal or in console.
sudo inxi --color --filter --verbosity=8
  • Personally identifiable information such as serial numbers and MAC addresses are filtered out by this command
  • Presenting the information in this way allows everyone to be familiar with the format and quickly find the items they need without missing anything.
  1. Copy the output from inxi (including the command) and paste it into your post.
  • To make it more readable, add 3 backticks ``` on an extra line before and after the pasted text.
  1. Or we can try to play hide and seek
Have you already :mag: for your problem in the forum ? (Wisdom lies in asking → listening → reading  )

Isn’t it :point_right:Alt + PrtSc + REISUB? By the way, have you enabled SYSRQ for rebooting. I had no idea either back then, but the ArchWiki states, you have to enable it first:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Keyboard_shortcuts#Enabling

systemd has the SysRq permissions bitmask set to 0x10 by default, which does not allow process signalling or rebooting.

I for one have added sysrq_always_enabled=1 to the kernel parameters at /etc/default/grub to make sure SYSRQ is fully enabled.

Have you tried switching to another terminal when the screen freezes? Like CTRL + ALT + F3. You might have to wait for up to ~30 seconds in case this works. Afterwards you can switch back with CTRL + ALT + F2 and your session should still be running. That’s at least working for me.

Have you tried an LTS kernel like 6.12?

Thank you for the reply!

Yes, it is Alt + PrtSc + REISUB (I just typed it wrong). And yes, I have enable it already.

LTS 6.12 suddenly stop working for me in Manjaro somehow and all that I get using this kernel is a completely black screen. Even though, 6.12 doesn’t work well with this laptop components.

About trying to access another terminal, that’s not possible. The entire laptop freezes, there is no response from anything, even capslock, nothing. It’s not a driver/interface issue, it’s a complete freeze. (Even trying to access using SSH from another computer isn’t possible.

sudo inxi --color --filter --verbosity=8  ✔

My ‘System freezes’ (the discussion you attached in your original post) are caused by ‘race conditions’ in the AMD driver. According to your inxi output, zenbook S14 doesn’t come with an AMD GPU though.

The tip about switching virtual terminals was given under the assumption of a running AMD GPU. Chances are low then, switching terminals will fix your problem.

Unfortunately I’m not very experienced in Linux and particularly with notebooks. The Arch Wiki doesn’t mention any obvious problems (apart from sound) with the device.

Not sure how to help any further than to try the (now released) kernel 6.16 instead of the release candidate. Maybe a search in the Arch Linux forum might turn up some helpful tips too. Like:

EDIT

Just noticed you’re already posted it in this exact discussion in the ArchLinux forums. Sorry.

Yeah, I’m trying to shoot everywhere

Thank you anyway, I’ll try the latest 6.16 (non-RC) and keep this thread updated.

I’d take a shot at 6.17.0-rc1 too.

Good news. It seems to be fixed since 6.15.9-2. At least after upgrading to that version (and versions above), I didn’t get any complete freezing anymore.

I’ll wait a few weeks more until marking the issue as solved.

Yep. It seems fixed now. No more freezings for Zenbook S14.

And now the issue you face is that kernel 6.15 reached EOL several weeks ago – on August 20 – which means that updates are no longer provided from the official Manjaro repositories.

I’m using Kernel 6.16 and the problem was fixed there too at the same time it was fixed for 6.15
