The last button that Firefox added to the Toolbar was easy to disable in about:config.
Customise Toolbar is designed to make easy adjustments for your Firefox Layout.
I don’t want a new button in my layout that don’t give me improvement and the disabling option is hidden and the only way to disable it with userChrome.css file.
I expect something like this from Microsoft, but not from Mozilla… for me this is annoying.
I found that dragging the button to the left side of the toolbar, as you suggest, makes it much less noticeable, especially as I always have a few pinned tabs open anyway:
Even though I don’t use the button a lot for switching tabs, I do find its “Search Tabs” feature handy when I have a lot of tabs open and need to quickly locate a specific tab by its title.
Partly because anyone using a keyboard might prefer to use the shortcut CtrlShiftTab - for which I developed the enviable skill of depressing Ctrl-Shift with a thumb and reach up with my forefinger to hit Tab…
This, in itself, is annoying because we cannot edit shortcuts which we might find a bit awkward - but it’s more annoying when you aren’t able to remove the click target.
For sure - it doesn’t really bother me, because giving Firefox at least a half screen (normal FHD screen) I can easily manage a bunch of tabs, sometimes 6 or 7…
I prefer the CtrlTab shortcut (basically an expose, showing thumbnails across the screen to choose from) if I can’t just see what I want up top.
The main annoyance for me would be that, after using Zen, I appreciate that these shortcuts are great if you also have the option to hide the tabs altogether.
I do use and appreciate that button, probably because I’m a tab hoarder.
I’ve got more of an issue with “Pocket” integration. I don’t need or want it, and it’s also a stupid name for something to store bookmarks or whatever it’s for. Pockets are where you put things like keys, change, cards in, not web pages.
Mind you, I have an issue with the name “Spectacle” for a Screenshot program … spectacles don’t take photos, generally, unless they are made by the likes of Scroogle™. KScreenshot being a much more apt name.
Now that I have, I agree it’s inconvenient (for me). Typically, I reserve that space for (my choice) of addons that I use; this crowds my space much like the Recent Browsing button did. The only difference is that I could pin that button to the Overflow Menu.
In about:config set toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets to true.
create a folder in your profile called chrome. Create a file called userChrome.css
copy the following into the userChrome.css file:
Slightly offtopic: i just heard a radio advertisment for firefox, something about edge and privacy and Pinocchio…was’t very focused … i have never heard an ad for opensource. They have either suddenly become so rich that they can afford radio spots, or the reputation damage with the new “nontracking” tracking setting was bigger than expected.
‘Spectacles’ usually refers to eyeglasses, rather than being plural of spectacle… something notable to be viewed, eye-catching - it does fit in somewhat more than ‘firefox’.
The argument for eyeglasses wouldn’t be far behind, I put on my glasses when I need to focus on something…
Perhaps pointing out ‘kwrite’ vs ‘kcode’ instead of ‘kate’ would be more on point with that argument… it would fit me - as I have mono fonts in kate and proportional in kwrite and use them differently.
However, the option to ‘view all tabs’ has always been present - the issue here really is that now, you don’t have the option to add or remove the button…
It is hard coded, just like the Hamburger menu - which many folks don’t like because we already have an excellent hidden menu which pops up when we hit ALT.
