Failing to update: failed to prepare transaction (invalid or corrupted package)

Hey all,

I’m running an update, and a file seems to be missing causing it to fail a complete uptate. Tried updating it partially but it also did not roll. Other posts on the matter that directed to removing the file were inconclusive in my research.
Still learning, here is the prompt:

sudo pacman -Syu --noconfirm --overwrite \*  ✔

warning: could not fully load metadata for package evince-46.1-1

I appreciate any help or direction to a known post that solves/ellaborates on this.

  • Is your file system full???
  • You need to maintain your Pacnew files

Welcome to Manjaro! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

  1. Please read the information behind this link. It will help you to post necessary information.
  1. Please press the three dots below your post and then press the :pencil2:
  • If you give us information about your system, we can see what we’re talking about and make better suggestions.
  • You can do this by using inxi in a terminal or in console.
sudo inxi --verbosity=8 --filter --width
  • Personally identifiable information such as serial numbers and MAC addresses are filtered out by this command
  • Presenting the information in this way allows everyone to be familiar with the format and quickly find the items they need without missing anything.
  1. Copy the output from inxi (including the command) and paste it into your post.
  • To make it more readable, add 3 backticks ``` on an extra line before and after the pasted text.

Have you already :mag: for your problem in the forum ? (Wisdom lies in asking → listening → reading :wink: )

Hi.

This indicates an issue with your local database.
To solve it, first create the missing file:

sudo touch /var/lib/pacman/local/evince-46.1-1/desc

and then update your system:

sudo pacman -Syu

Hey @andreas85 , thanks, yeah I did some researching wasn’t able to find anything that worked or made me understand it better.
The system ain’t full, I’ve shared the inxi output at the end of the post.
Thank you for reaching out!

This is a different file, so you have to do the same for this file too:

sudo touch /var/lib/pacman/local/evince-46.1-1/files

and then try to update your system.

with

sudo pacman-mirrors --continent && sudo pacman -Syu

This repo hasn’t existed for a very long time. It looks like you haven’t been maintaining your system properly. When is the last time you performed an update; and regular maintenance?

A partial update state is unsupported. It seems to me you might have tried a number of random things that might have landed you in this predicament. Can you list any commands you’ve used? (the up arrow should scroll through your command history). Of course, if you used pamac-manager (GUI) for anything, your command history won’t be that useful.

@soundofthunder
yeah, I’m still learning, it seems to be a continuous proccess.

I’d say less then a week ago, always with sudo pacman - Syu

I had to reinstall my kernell not so long ago due to an unfortunate shutdown during update:
Original Post “Cannot boot due to shutdown during update ‘/boot/vmlinuz-6.1-x86_64’ missing”
So I’d say that was my last “maintenance”, but maybe it means something else? Enlighten me if possible, I’m eager to learn.

By partial I mean I tried updating through the GUI, opting out of what I understood was causing the error, maybe that lead you to think something else. This error appeared while doing the straight forward update sudo pacman -Syu, I went through other forum posts trying to see if they reflected on an analogue of my situation, none seemed to do so to my short understanding. So, beside my sudo pacman -Syuand other prompts from helpng users on this post, there’s not much on my command history since my last attempt to update:

Hello,
I would suggest to first remove evince, then update and reinstall evince.
Your error is strange as it seems linked to an old version and not the one to be installed (46.3 here on my PC).

@Denis_Pom yeah, thanks, just what I did pamac remove evince showed me there were dependencies on sushi so had to remove it too. Then I proceeded with normal sudo pamac -Syu. So now evince (46.3-1)and sushi (46.0-1) are on.
Thank you @Denis_Pom and all in this thread.

It’s good that you’re eager to learn.

That’s part of the reason the Stable Update Announcements exist - for you to address important maintenance tasks as they arise, and learn from the experience.

Each time a Manjaro update becomes ready a new thread is created to address issues specific to that update; for example, the last was [Stable Update] 2024-05-29.

In each Update Announcement is a section clearly marked as Known issues and solutions - you are expected to monitor these announcements and be aware of any issues affecting the update; preferably before performing the update.

Manjaro is a so-called rolling release distribution that requires hands-on attention by its users, so this expectation is justified.

In the case of:

which I drew attention to earlier:

The removal of that repo was documented in the respective Update Announcement at the time - so long ago, in fact, that it is no longer listed under recent announcements;

Stable Update 2023-07-10

The community repository has been merged into extra and is now empty

The Arch git migration is now complete .

The [community] repository has been merged into [extra] and is now empty.
It may take a bit of time for mirrors to catch up (more details here).

Update your system and handle the pacman

sudo pacman -Syu "pacman>=6.0.2-11"

In order to remove the defunct [community] repo changes must be made to /etc/pacman.conf.
Changes will be provided in a file with the extension .pacnew.
Pacman provides the utility pacdiff to manage these files and will use vim -d for comparison if the environment variable DIFFPROG is not set.

pacdiff -s

If you would like to use a different comparison tool you may prepend the env var:

DIFFPROG=meld pacdiff -s

Then sync with the repositories again:

sudo pacman -Syu

And you can also remove the now unused repository.

sudo pacman -Sc

NOTE: Be aware that this last command will also remove all packages in the pacman cache that are not currently installed: in other words, backup copies of packages that you have uninstalled at some point will no longer be stored on your hard drive.

In most cases, this probably will not cause headaches. To prevent even minor aches and pains, see the Arch Wiki for information on cleaning the cache

As it happens this issue had a comparatively easy fix, which was provided via a pacnew file for you to carefully merge with the existing file.

Failure to correct that issue could simply be an oversight, however, it can also be indicative of a complete disregard for system maintenance.

This is common among (particularly newer) users who make an assumption that performing an update equates to system maintenance, and nothing else needs to be done; or, if they take an entitled stance that they should not have to do that !@#$%, which happens more often than one might reasonably expect.

In short, always check the Update Announcements, and search for related information any time you have an issue. When asking for support, always remember that quality responses are directly proportional to the accuracy and clarity of your questions.

Cheers.
