"Failed to add printer" promt on one pc, but can add network printer on other pc

I wanted to add my printer on Manjaro (Gnome) and the settings app finds my network printer. However, when I want to add the printer the setup failes with the prompt “Failed to add printer”.

I followed all steps from the official Manjaro wiki about printing and on my Manjaro (Gnome) installation on a different pc everything works fine. I can remove and then add the printer again without problems.

What is the issue here?

On the machine where it doesn’t work, do you have a firewall enabled?

  • If yes: turn it off and try again.

  • If no, what’s the output there of:

    ping -O -D -c 4

Firewall is and was not enabled

Seems like the ping works

  • Go to Print Settings
  • Unlock if needed
  • Press + Add
  • Open Network Printer
  • Doucle-click the printer:

What happens?

(KDE here: try finding something similar in Gnome. If that doesn’t work, I’m unable to help you any further)

Thank you for your help, I really appreciate it.
In Gnome I couldn’t find a similar setting you were referring to.
I installed KDE alongside Gnome but for some reason no printing settings module was installed although I closely followed the instructions (https://wiki.manjaro.org/index.php/Install_Desktop_Environments#KDE_Plasma_5) and I couldn’t find any package which would deliver the print settings.

Aargh! Don’t install 2 DEs for one user…


Post how you did it and a screenshot of your Gnome stuff instead: maybe I remember from my Ubuntu days…

oopsy :sweat_smile: what’s the issue here?

I installed with

sudo pacman -S plasma kio-extras
sudo pacman -S kde-applications

rebooted and at login selected plasma

here a screenshot of the gnome settings. If I click on “Add printer” a new window opens and it searches for available network printers but there are no further options:

Lots of people run into more issues than before.

So again like the printer doesn’t exist…

Are the 2 computers/printer on 2 different WiFi networks? E.F. 2.4 GHz and 5 HGz?

(grasping at straws now)

Both PCs and the printer are connected to the same network by wire.

Both computer identical, on identical network, with printer on same network…


I don’t know what to tell you any more…

I will try it with a live usb and if I can add the printer there. Maybe it’s some misconfiguration somewhere deep down. In that case… probably reinstall… :thinking:

Solution: Reinstall OS

That was going through my mind too and what I would do…

Booting a live usb and adding the printer works… so it’s probably some misconfiguration somewhere in the os.

Not necessarily: Does this also happen if you create a new user and log in there???

  • reinstall it is then… :sob:
  • Ensure that the first thing you do after a reinstall is to add the printer before you restore your data
  • only restore your documents, not your settings! (as they somehow are messed up somewhere…)
