The password issue was either my fault or the old MS Office keyboard (I ordered a new one). If I go slow and careful I can login. After copying my data to an SSD I reinstalled Manjaro and restored the data. I have since done another Timeshift and it shows the latest release.
Everything is working including boot without going into grub menu thanks to your kind help!
