Error: file '/grub/i386-pc/normal.mod' not found

When booting my desktop, it displays this error:

error: file `/grub/i386-pc/normal.mod not found Entering rescue mode…
grub rescue> _

I have tried entering my BIOS, but it is frozen…
I have a win10 SSD and a Manjaro SSD so I tried disconnecting each of them before booting but no matter which is connected, it boots to the same screen.

I then tried replacing my CMOS battery… No luck.

I tried disconnecting both and plugging in a live Linux USB that I had handy. Still the same result.

I’m at a loss here. What can I do to get my desktop working again?

Edit: some outputs:

grub rescue> set
cmdpath=(hd0)
prefix=(hd0,msdos1)/grub
root=hd0,msdos1

grub rescue> ls
(hd0) (hd0,msdos1) (hd1) (hd2) (hd3) (hd3,msdos1)

(hd0,msdos1) is the only one that doesn’t return (filesystem is unknown). If I run set prefix=(hd0,msdos1)/grub then run insmod normal, then it just returns the same normal.mod error.

This is my latest available inxi output from a previous forum post. I cannot access the current output for obvious reasons.
Once I was able to boot to Manjaro, I updated the inxi output:

$ inxi -zv8                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 ✔

Have you tried restoring grub?

And enter the uefi once more and set everything to EFI, disable CSM or compatibility mode. A system sold with win10 is at most couple of years old and should be uefi, and grub should not try to locate anything 386. It might be if the uefi is confusing it.
Check the settings in uefi and reinstall grub in efi mode.

If I boot to UEFI, it’s frozen. I tried a different keyboard and mouse but nothing works. Can’t access the BIOS unfortunately.

Can you boot (in UEFI mode) to a Manjaro Installer; whether it be DVD, ISO or USB?

If you can, then I refer you back to the question from @Teo

Your system seems to have been booting in Legacy (BIOS) mode, and running only 32-bit operating systems (a guess). Is your system capable of running a 64-bit OS in UEFI mode?

Some more information might be helpful to someone. Please post the output of the following commands, if you can manage to boot via the Manjaro Installer (in any mode), and enter chroot:

System information:

inxi --admin --verbosity=8 --filter --no-host --width

Recent logs:

journalctl --boot=-1 --priority=3 --catalog --no-pager

Cheers.

My BIOS freezes so I can’t boot or change the boot settings.

I found a manual to reset the CMOS battery so I could reset my BIOS.

Did it help?
When you can get to it
it’s easiest to just remove the battery for a few minutes (or hours, to be on the safe side)
Then install it again (preferrably a new one).
Then you’ll have to set your BIOS/Uefi to defaults and then set it to the settings you need/want …
and then proceed to boot any OS

I reset my BIOS, and disabled secure boot. Then, I was able to boot into Manjaro!

The first thing that I did was update the inxi output above and run $ pacdiff -o which returned the following:

$ pacdiff -o
/usr/share/icons/default/index.theme.pacnew
/etc/shells.pacnew
/etc/locale.gen.pacnew
/etc/default/grub.pacnew
/etc/pamac.conf.pacnew
/etc/mkinitcpio.conf.pacnew
/etc/pacman.conf.pacnew
/etc/sane.d/canon_lide70.conf.pacnew
/etc/sane.d/escl.conf.pacnew
/etc/pam.d/sddm.pacnew

So, I found this forum post and then went into the pamac-manager gui, disabled AUR, and kicked off a multi-GB update which is in progress now…

You are (at some point, it is not urgent) supposed to compare the content of the new files with that of the existing files
and incorporate the changes into the actually used files

Those .pacnew files do need to be merged. You may find some useful info/links here.

I wonder if this is the cause of some of the issues where people report “missing” icons?

I have never seen a pacnew for anything outside of /etc except for a few pacsaves in /usr

I have that too:

cat /usr/share/icons/default/index.theme
[Icon Theme]
Inherits=Adwaita
cat /usr/share/icons/default/index.theme.pacsave
[icon theme]
Inherits=xcursor-breeze

I would not know which one to choose - it was all working fine with the original …

Mine’s this (no new .pacsave or .pacnew here after this update):

cat /usr/share/icons/default/index.theme
[Icon Theme]
Inherits=Adwaita

… in case that’s of any importance? I’d have to check an old .ISO image.

Any news on progress …? :smiley:

The update was a success! There’s just some AUR packages that error out but that’s something I can handle in a separate ticket I think since the core issue has been resolved. :slight_smile:
