Run fsck on /dev/sda5 - that is the one with errors.

I have to mount the partitions, how do I do the command on the partition you mentioned?

No, you don’t have to mount them - you can’t run fsck on a mounted file system.

How do I run the command only on the /dev/sda5 partition?
Do I have to reboot afterwards?

Run the command on the partition.

sudo fsck /dev/sda5

  • boot from USB.
  • open a terminal
  • type sudo e2fsck -v /dev/sda5 and hit enter
See what type of errors get reported and whether they can be fixed automatically.

When the check and repair was successful - of course reboot.

/dev/sda5: recovering journal
Superblock needs_recovery flag is clear, but journal has data.
Run journal anyway? yes
e2fsck: unable to set superblock flags on /dev/sda5

/dev/sda5: ********** WARNING: Filesystem still has errors **********

All I could do would be to google what that means and how to approach it - I don’t know of the top of my head.

Maybe use a different superblock - the -b option?
man e2fsck

I don’t know.

Set this up for future use:

Thanks for the info, I’ll try to figure out how to do it next time. But can my system be repaired or do I have to reinstall everything?

Yes.
Check and repair the file system.
I very much doubt that is irreparably damaged.
I just don’t know how, exactly and I’d rather not give instructions.
Have you tried using a search engine to look for the error you got and how to approach it?

Thanks for the directions, I’ll do some research now but I think reinstalling is the shortest route.

I’ve not really had any issues like this, I don’t know if it’s fixable or not. How old is the drive?

I’ve been reading up on the error message, but nothing’s sticking out except that the drive may have failed, or try using another superblock.

If it works then using another superblock is probably the quickest.

If the SSD is broken it would be the second in 4 years, at this point I can say that INTENSO SSDs suck and I will have to get another one.
I do not have an in-depth knowhow of Linux, it would be very difficult and it would take me too long to come up with a solution by myself. Thanks anyway.

This is what I’d try before trying a reinstallation
(booted from USB, /dev/sda5 not mounted):

Find out the alternate superblocks.
sudo mke2fs -n /dev/sda5

or
sudo dumpe2fs /dev/sda5 | grep -i superblock

Then use one of those numbers (the alternate superblock) to run the check like so:

sudo e2fsck -b one_of_the_numbers /dev/sda5

Scientific research has shown that the main cause of failure in consumer electronics is the expiry of the warranty. :stuck_out_tongue:

All jest aside, I have never even heard of that brand of SSDs that you mention, but the one in my computer is a now 6-year old Samsung 860 QVO — connected via an SATA3 cable — and it has so far proven highly reliable, so that is definitely a type of SSD I would recommend.

The brand rings a rather faint bell, like I’ve seen them somewhere, but I know nothing about them. For whatever it’s worth here’s my opinion:

It’s not something you want to cheap out on, I’d say it’s best to get a good well known brand and model.

I haven’t had an SSD fail yet, most are still fairly young, but one’s over a decade old (albeit in someone else’s computer for the last few years). That’s an OCZ Vertex 4 (MLC), the best I’ve had after that are either Samsung or Crucial MX500.
