EasyEffects not working

Before I replace my Mic, cause it is super sensitive and catches sounds from even the other floor, I wanted to try EasyEffects. I have PulseEffects installed already, installed EasyEffects through pamac, it is available in start menu, under Multimedia, but it does not open.

This is my log when I try to run it:

Thank you for your reply.
I did try search, and follow the guides too, but I don’t think it is working and I was confused with all the terms, pulse, alsa, jack, etc… Have been making a lot of changes to my audio trying to get VMs to have better sound, and also remove cracks and delays. Now they are fine but not sure what is installed/removed…

Your problem appears to be that you are still running pulseaudio, you have pipewire installed but not enabled.

Try this command:

pamac remove manjaro-pulse pulseaudio-equalizer pulseaudio-jack pulseaudio-lirc pulseaudio-rtp && pamac install manjaro-pipewire

Then restart your machine and try easyeffects again. Make sure that pulseeffects is not running.

I had removed most of these packages but not all.
Also I reinstalled both manjaro-pipewire and easyeffects and now it works.
Thank you!

Ok… something is still wrong here…
After the next reboot, where the only thing I did was open Easy Effects and add 1 plugin for mic, I don’t have sound at all… No icon in my taskbar, no option in my System Settings and of course no output at my sound card (USB).

I used Timeshift to restore my state, before I even tried to install EasyEffects. Old habit that saved me lots of times…
Now, I am right at the state before I installed it and, based on your request, I see that I am using PusleAudio and not Pipewire.

Now, I am right at the state before I installed it and, based on your request, I see that I am using PusleAudio and not Pipewire.

Indeed, that would be the reason EasyEffects stopped working, so would I be right to assume replacing pulseaudio with pipewire again solved this issue?

That is what I tried to do on the first place and failed…

You’re gonna need to be more specific about how you failed, did you get any errors? What did you do? What was the result?

  1. Ran Timeshift to create a restore point
  2. Installed EasyEffects, didn’t work
  3. Removed the packages as per your suggestion. Looked ok.
  4. Rebooted, and there were no sound devices and no sound.
  5. Tried lots of install/remove packages, couldn’t make it work
  6. Ran Timeshift again, to restore back to 1

So, now I am in the point to try enabling Pipewire and install EasyEffects, over PulseAudio, which is the one it seems I am using. But the guide I followed, made the above happens, so I need another guide.

The command I gave you should literally uninstall pulse and replace it with pipewire, and you can use pactl info to see if you’re running pipewire or not (should say:
Server Name: PulseAudio (on PipeWire 0.3.35)
)

Once you have reached that step, it’s time to check if your audio is working on pipewire, and if not, find out why.

After that you can finally try easyeffects.

Gotta work in steps when troubleshooting things like this, steps or levels.

Level 1 for sound is usually ALSA which is what your drivers usually interface with.
Level 2 would be the sound server or other middleware, this is pipewire or pulse usually; they also interface with alsa (or rather run at least in part on top of it)
Level 3 would be things that alter your sound (e.g. pulse/easyeffects)
Level 4 would be the actual applications.

If something’s breaking, you have to find out at which point it’s breaking first, then see if you can fix that or not before moving on to the next level.

Also the levels depend on setup really, some people just have alsa and applications running on alsa, no middleware/sound server like pulse or pipewire, and no further middleware like equalizers, just the applications that produce sound.

But it’s simple to deduce logically. For anything to work, the level before needs to be fully functional.

By the sound of it you’re following a guide, is that guide made for manjaro? This is pretty important, as you should be able to see based on the command I gave you manjaro handles the specific packages involved (pipewire and pulse) in a unique way different from other distros and trying to forcefully bypass that is bound to lead to problems.

Since I couldn’t find a specific Manjaro guide, I followed this one:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/PipeWire

And then for EasyEffects this:

But maybe my mistake was that I didn’t do all the tests before proceeding to the next step (level). Will try again. Thank you.

Ok, so I followed a YT guide I found, and it worked.

sudo pamac remove pulseaudio
sudo pamac install manjaro-pipewire plasma-pa

reboot

systemctl --user list-unit-files | grep pipewire

pipewire-media-session.service	enabled enabled
pipewire-pulse.service disabled	enabled
pipewire.service disabled	enabled
pipewire-pulse.socket enabled enabled
pipewire.socket masked enabled

At this point I had no detected devices on my system, but the speaker appeared, although with a red line.
After a bit of googling:

sudo systemctl --machine=username@.host --user unmask pipewire.socket
systemctl --user restart pipewire.service pipewire.socket pipewire-pulse.service pipewire-pulse.socket pipewire-media-session.service

And now everything works fine.

Will try EasyEffects later, after I reboot again and make sure everything works.

ah so you uninstalled your volume control application, I recall you mentioned this before, if you had told me you were on KDE I could have given you that command earlier, since I made that mistake too once

Do you have to run that last command on every boot? or just the first time? And is everything working for you now?

I did one reboot after it worked, and looks fine now. I will check tomorrow however to be 100% sure.
Also, the reason I wanted to install EasyEffects on the first place, was to use the Noice Cancellation plugin, but my friends on Discord could not hear any background noise anymore, just by enabling Pipewire!

Just the first time. Since then it works with no issues.
