Dual Monitor issues with ASUS MB169B+

Hello, I just got a new ASUS MB169B+ monitor and I am wondering why night color is only on on my laptop display. Also how to do I add a application menu bar panel to the external monitor when every time i try to add it, the panel automatically goes to my laptop monitor and I can’t move it.

Update: I figured out how to move the panel to the external monitor by right clicking it editing it, and dragging “Screen Edge”. Still have the Night Color problem though.

:+1: Welcome to Manjaro! :+1:

  1. Please read this:
    How to provide good information
    and post some more information so we can see what’s really going on. Now we know the symptom of the disease, but we need some more probing to know where the origin lies…

  2. An inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width would be the minimum required information… (Personally Identifiable Information like serial numbers and MAC addresses will be filtered out by the above command)

  3. The output to xrandr would be helpful too!

:+1:

P.S. If you enter a bit more details in your profile, we can also see which Desktop Environment you’re using, which CPU/GPU or Kernel you have, …

Output to inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width is:

  1. In the future, when providing code/output, please copy-paste that output in-between 3 backticks ``` at the beginning and end of the code/text so that the output looks like this:

    instead of like this:

    Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. 2. No need to do anything right now as I’m an editor here on this site and have fixed it for you already. However, in the future I might not see your post so review my edits by pushing the orange pencil above the post I just fixed. :wink:

  3. Kernel: 5.9.16-1-MANJARO is EOL. Try upgrading to 5.4 LTS (Long Term Support) and 5.10 (LTS candidate) in that order.

  4. What’s the output of grep --after-context=7 "NightColor" ~/.config/kwinrc ?

  5. Can you plug the external monitor in another port than the DisplayLink and see if that works?

:+1:

How do I change to kernal 5.4 without breaking my system. Somehow the kernal got updated to 5.9 with a package install or something. And how do I keep the system from changing the kernal without my knowledge?

Please read this:

Please read this:

https://wiki.manjaro.org/index.php/Manjaro_Kernels

@Fabby So, I already use timeshift. And so I should install a new kernal and I should be using the Linux 5.4.93_rt51-1 kernal?

Sorry for not being clear:

I meant to say: Install both, try them both and even if only one is working, keep them both and get rid of 5.9 after your testing of both 5.4 and 5.10

Which one you end up using is up to you.

Also don’t forget to answer:

:+1:

Okay, so the output of grep --after-context=7 "NightColor" ~/.config/kwinrc is:

[NightColor]
Active=true
Mode=Constant
NightTemperature=2400

[Plugins]
kwin4_effect_dimscreenEnabled=true

And the external monitor is a usb monitor. Sorry if I don’t understand what you mean.
Also I tried installing kernal 5.4 rebooted and choose to use 5.4 in the grub but it would not start.

Update: Also trying kernal 5.10, the system starts but on startup I get Error: DisplayLInk service did not start and the monitor does not work.

@Fabby I tried to update to 5.4 from the terminal this time and my system would not start at all with 5.4 or 5.9 anymore so I had to use timeshift to go back to yesterday’s snapshot.

The only thing left for you to do then is to file a bug with the correct KDE team because I think it’s because you only have a USB monitor because I’ve never seen this with VGA / HDMI / … monitors.

:sob:

@Fabby okay, but i am stuck with the 5.9 kernal then?

No! Anything except 5.9 is what you have to keep…

For more information on kernel management:
https://www.kernel.org/

@Fabby Why does kernal 5.4 not boot on my computer then?

  • When using a rolling release like Manjaro, Kernel management is something you need to take into account. Some will work, others might not.
  • With the information you’ve provided, no one can tell you why 5.4 doesn’t boot.
  • This conversation has now become off-topic from the original problem.

:sob:

Okay, well thanks.
