Computer doesn't boot at first try and freezes randomly

Hi There,

My computer doesn’t boot at first try. It freezes on black screen before splash logo, freezes at splash or after login to my account with black screen with cursor. Also when I boot success, sometimes randomly became unresponsive with moving cursor before completely freeezes in 1 minute. This is why I did force shutdown occasionally. Sometimes I need to boot Live usb to run fsck, e2fsck in order to repair my file system.

I little swap is always better than none.

I’ve enabled the swap. At the moment shutdown and boot proccess is very slow. I saw a stop job is running for 6 minutes while shutdown in progress.

When you run the filesystem checks, do you see errors being reported/corrected?

yes I see errors and they got fixed after filesystemchecks.

Based on what you shared, I am tempted to believe that you have a dying hard drive.

Don’t know what to do about :point_up: but I would be worried.

It’s just force shutdown count which is I did when computer freezes. My drive seems healty.

Oke, so you have forced the shutdown 232 times and it freezes ranomly :thinking:. I’ve had a nvme drive give all OK’s and still lock up in a state where nothing would be writen to disk, no errors reported does not mean no errors. It might be difficult to replace the drive but if there is nothing else wrong that you can find… What can you find in the journal?

:point_up: does not seem good, report it to the supplier/dealer, I’ve had this with 2 drives in a row and had them replaced. Or the drive gets to hot?

:point_down: seems something is hotter then a threshold, check the temperature settings / clean out the dust / repair fans ?

It’s a brand new computer, I only used for one month. I don’t think there is a dust on cooling system. I’m not sure dealer will replace drive because smart reports seems ok. I saw a firmware upgrade for nvme which is critical and released ten days ago. I’ll give ot a try to firmware update and keep eye on logs.

The firmware of nvme was already latest. Unfortunately I had switch to another distro. So far I haven’t got any freezes or boot, shutdown hangs. Journalctl and dmesg logs are clear.
