Compositing/kwin broken, buggy+laggy display and graphical errors

For a bit now my compositing has been very broken, it got worse after an update but I did said update mainly because the compositing was broken. It will generally be a bit buggy and not render things like videos or changes on the screen properly then now when I alt+tab it completely crashes. Restarting KDE temporarily fixes the problem (for like 4 seconds) or until I alt+tab.

I took a quick video on how it looks but I can’t include links in my post. But to describe some of the visual issues it’s like when a video have terrible bitrate, big chunks of the screen won’t update unless some large change occurs which will make it refresh, also opening the taskbar it’ll usually be invisible then to see the icons I’ll have to hover over them. It’s a bit hard to explain but I hope you get the jizzt, while writing this I can only see what I write in the preview window it’s not updating in the text/editable area, again I took a screenshot but I can’t upload or embed media…

If I restart kwin in a terminal with
setsid kwin_x11 --replace &
I get this when it crashes. Sometime it’ll also set Compositing Enabled to False in kwinrc (but won’t set OpenGLIsUnsafe to true)

Application::crashHandler() called with signal 11; recent crashes: 1                                                                                  ✔

I’m a bit perplexed as to why this is happening, I’ve always had a little bit of a problem with graphics mainly in firefox but those happened rarely and was fixed by just restarting that window. Thank you reading and any help…

Try using OpenGL 2.0 for the compositor backend. Change your compositor settings from “system settings → display and monitor → compositor”. I use OpenGL 2.0 as the compositor backend and the same NVIDIA driver version as yours and so far, there hasn’t been any problem.

Added info

I have :frowning: Still no change.

Actually, if I put to OpenGL 2 in the compositor when it crashes in the log it says “OpenGL version: 4.6”

clone your system to image by clonezilla, and do a fresh install to compare, you can try different nvidia driver, personally I like the driver from nvidia than nouveau, performance feel better.

Compare what? The OpenGL 2 vs 4.6 version? I don’t need to compare functionality because I know that it’s more broken now…

@ForteD probably meant to back-up your system and try different NVIDIA driver version, which you need to download from the NVIDIA directly without mhwd from Unix Drivers | NVIDIA

For your GPU model, it should be 470.xx or 495.xx.

If you don’t want to try different NVIDIA driver, perhaps try my last advice to you below:

Graphics:
Device-1: NVIDIA GP104 [GeForce GTX 1080] vendor: Gigabyte driver: vfio-pci
    v: 0.2 alternate: nouveau,nvidia_drm,nvidia bus-ID: 23:00.0
    chip-ID: 10de:1b80 class-ID: 0300
Device-2: NVIDIA GM206 [GeForce GTX 960] vendor: Gigabyte driver: nvidia
    v: 495.44 alternate: nouveau,nvidia_drm bus-ID: 2d:00.0 chip-ID: 10de:1401
    class-ID: 0300

You also have 2 NVIDIA discrete graphics set-up. I never deal with this, but maybe you can try installing driver for the GTX 1080 the “nvidia” driver, the same driver as for your GTX 960. I don’t know how to this with mhwd because mhwd doesn’t seem to be able to receive the bus-ID distinguishing these 2 discrete graphics.

The last thing I can advice to you is to file this bug to KDE. I ran out of solution and this is probably KDE bug; I think your dual GPU set up is an edge case in Linux kernel + DE.

Do a fresh install to check is it by driver problem, or by something you did before that make kde mess up.

This happened before I had dual GPUs and Linux doesn’t even have access to my 1080. The 1080 is being passed to qemu/kvm. I don’t see how all of a sudden it would break since I haven’t changed any drivers and I’ve used this setup working well enough for over 8 months now.

I haven’t changed drivers or anything else that would cause this to just suddenly start happening :d But if it comes to that I will.

I don’t know any more good tries. I say issuing this problem to KDE is a good idea.

Random thought. Have you tried kwinft? I saw about it somewheree and can’t remember if it was here (and it very well might be), but I though I’d share in case it was unknown.

It’s available in the extra repository

$ pamac search kwinft

kwinft 5.23.0-1 extra
drop-in replacement for KWin with additional libwayland wrapping Qt/C++ library Wrapland

So can be installed with

pamac install kwinft

I have, however, absolutely 0 (zero, none, nothing, ziltch) idea if this’ll work or if it’ll rather break something, and take no responsibility if it does. But you are more than welcome top heap on the praise if it works.

I’ve reinstalled the NVIDIA drivers for the 960 if that doesn’t help after a restart or so I will try this, thank you.

Update: It did not work it still crashes when I alt+tab.

I can now attach media although I don’t seem to be able to edit my main post, here’s a video showcasing the problems a bit.

You could try the simple xcompmgr utility. It is in the package manager.

Disable the option to have the kwin compositor run at startup. Then add the xcompmgr utility to your autostart.
