Changing volume too fast causes system restart

Hello. First I will write my specs:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600 overclocked to 4,1 GHz
RAM: 16GB 3000MHz CL16
GPU: Gainward Phoenix RTX 2060 GS
MOBO: MSI B450-A PRO
SSD: Samsung 970 EVO Plus 500GB
Sound Card: Asus Xonar DGX
Dual boot Windows 10 and Manjaro KDE

When I am turning volume up and down very quickly, my computer is restarting. Then, after choosing Manjaro in GRUB menu, i can see for a few seconds this output:

Then, system normally starts up.
Also sometimes, when I am starting YouTube video, system can also restart and show the same output like above.
On top of that, sometimes when I shutdown my computer, it is shutting down for 1 minute (when it normally takes 5 seconds), and after that 1 minute same output is shown.

I think it might have some relation with my dedicated soundcard. There are no native drivers for Linux for my soundcard, so I am forced to use these ones installed by default. If this can matter, I am plugging my headphones and microphone to front panel (i connected HD Audio header to my Xonar DGX).

Just checking in - don’t have a solution, unfortunately, but I have the same strange problem when changing the volume quickly. The PC just resets and displays the hardware errors on the next start. My setup is pretty similar: Ryzen 5 2600, ASRock B450 Pro4 and ASUS Xonar DGX. Stable branch, kernel 5.4.72-1.

Is @x264 's CPU overclocked as well?

Can you both provide the boot log from the previous boot (last 25 lines should be good)

Information at alsa-project.org -Asus shows Xonar DGX (CMI8786) has Linux support since kernel 3.14 with driver snd_oxygen

But Ryzen B450 motherboards have been mentioned a few times on this forum as having problems with onboard audio

I suggest you try a later kernel v5.8 or v5.9 that may have better support for your CPU/motherboard

if that does not help, I suggest you get more information about audio devices with

sudo alsa-info.sh --upload

No, I’m not running an overclock. The resetting behavior is very sporadic for me and not easily reproducible - it’s happened maybe three or four times, with lots of time inbetween:

I was running Civ 5 in Steam and it crashed out (Proton life :wink:). Changed the volume a couple minutes later, then the system reset.

Urgh! Not reproducible: They’re the worst to debug….

  • As per @nikgnomic: Are you on 5.8 / 5.9 and what’s the output of sudo alsa-info.sh --upload ???
  • Did you perform a memtest already?

Like I said, I’m currently on 5.4.72…I’ll switch to 5.8 or 5.9 and report back if the same thing happens again, but it might be a couple of months.

And yeah, I actually just ran a memtest two weeks ago for a different reason (switched to another memory kit), it’s all good. So I’ve had this behavior with two completely different sets of RAM sticks.

All the data from ALSA appears to be problem free
Asus card has the correct driver snd_oxygen
onboard audio and HDMI has snd_hda_intel
and snd_usb_audio for the 2 USB devices

I do not see anything from the original machine check exemption errors relating to audio devices
but you could test if errors relate to the Asus card or USB devices by removing them

Archwiki suggests using package rasdaemon to gather more information

I suggest you look into this possible hardware problem as a priority

undesired or out-of-spec voltages from the power supply

check voltages in BIOS or sensors and try replacing the power supply if possible

Hmm, just happened again - first time since October. Kernel 5.9.16, and I’ve removed the USB webcam since then, so only the ‘Aureon’ USB soundcard is left. The crashes have only ever happened while using the Asus card, but I don’t use the other one a lot, so that doesn’t mean much.

I’m not really convinced it’s a hardware issue, but I’ll keep it in mind. Switching out my power supply (EVGA 750 GQ) isn’t really an option at the moment, since decent PSUs are in short supply and prices are through the roof where I live.

Kernel 5.9 is EOL so please install both 5.4 and 5.10 LTS (Long Time Support) and see which one of the two troubles you least.

Later kernels (v5.10 and v5.11) should have better support for Ryzen motherboards

You should also consider a BIOS update might resolve any system instability
ASRock > B450 Pro4 > BIOS
11 BIOS updates in 3 years is a lot more than most other motherboards, but I have seen similar amounts of BIOS updates for other B450 motherboards
