Hello everyone
I am stuck with CPU power states not working properly with my GNOME install on my new Lenovo ThinkPad Z16 laptop.
After installing Manjaro GNOME from scratch two weeks ago, I wanted to make use of the CPU governors by occasionally switching to “performance” mode when making music and needing all the power I can get from the CPU.
It seemed to work out of the box when executing sudo cpupower frequency-set -g performance
and subsequently checking with cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/scaling_governor
.
However, I didn’t notice an actual increase in performance nor was there an actual change in CPU frequency.
From my desktop computer (which sports a Ryzen 9 3900X) I am used to drastic differences between “powersave” and “performance” governors. Not so on my new laptop.
Also, I noticed that I could not change the governors from “GNOME settings > power” section nor from the GNOME shell panel toggles. The options to change the governors were simply not present in both of the mentioned places.
When executing sudo cpupower frequency-info | grep driver
I noticed that “acpi_cpufreq” was returned instead of “amd-pstate” (which was what I was expecting).
I checked in the BIOS and there is basically only one CPU related option which is whether or not to manage CPU power which is enabled.
So, I went ahead and first enabled systemctl enable cpupower.service
, installed AMD CPU power states and CPU power state governor support for the GNOME shell via pamac install power-profiles-daemon
followed by systemctl enable power-profiles-daemon
.
I also added amd_pstate=passive
as a kernel parameter to the end of GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=
via sudo nano /etc/default/grub
followed by grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
and systemctl reboot
.
The result is that I now see the toggles in the GNOME shell and in GNOME settings and seem to be able to change the governors from there too, but I still feel like there is actually nothing changing.
I am aware that my knowledge in this area is limited and that I might misunderstood or misconfigured something along the way. I am very thankful if anyone has an input on how I can make this work.
