A better way to deal with this is to change the display scale in your DE settings rather than the screen resolution. But, it is still troubling that you can’t change your resolution. Most DEs have it set up so when you change your resolution, you have to click a “keep” popup within an amount of time - are you doing that? Please post your system info to help track down the problem.
