Can’t boot after this update. My installation is luks encrypted. Grub is working but when I try to boot Manjaro, my monitor turns off for a minute or two, then I’m thrown into emergency mode before being asked for my luks passphrase, with a timeout error
“waiting for device /dev/.some_ID.”
followed by some related [DEPEND] messages and finally:
“Cannot open access to console, the root account is locked.”
I can decrypt and mount the luks partition like normal from a live stick.
My drive’s SMART status is healthy.
Hi, i moved your post to a dedicated topic, so you could get more help. Please post the output of inxi -zv8 as preformatted text. Also the log of the update from /var/log/pacman.log could show what went wrong.
On my notebook I run into the same trouble, while updating several other desktop systems went fine…
Solution for me: Boot into a Timeshift snapshot, redo the update sudo pacman -Syu and directly afterwards update & install the Grub bootloader again sudo update-grub & sudo grub-install then reboot.
Did you work out what the problem was though? It’s great you got it working again, but without determining what the problem was it doesn’t really help anyone and it’s just a guess that its the same problem.
That said, restoring the previous state from a timeshift snapshot may well get things working again temporarily - but one would want to gather the evidence first to prevent it happening again.
3 posts were split to a new topic: Cannot boot after Stable 2026-05-27 update
Was it really the same issue? So on your notebook there is luks encryption and the log was
[ TIME ] Timed out waiting for device./dev/. ...
and the desktop systems have no encryption?
This will be the second question: There wasn’t any grub package update recently (am i missing anything?) so for what reason installing something that is already installed (supposedly) could make a difference?
A post was merged into an existing topic: Cannot boot after Stable 2026-05-27 update
The solution from Theinvisible does not make any sense, because he did everything in the snapshot. The only thing that is common with his normal boot is the reinstallation of grub, however that is also something a hook automatically does after update, so…
Encrypted boot has always been way more problematic with grub. That is probably the problem of one of the users. What exactly in it i cannot say…
Also, my first thought was the other users have been affected by the change to systed hooks, where one has to also add rd.luks something to the kernel parameters. However that also doesn’t make sense. One user writes he didn’t had any pacnews and didn’t do anything to mkinitcpio.
One says he doesn’t receive password prompt (so it could be it), another says he can decrypt, so it isn’t this.
Sorry that i write at everybody at the same time, i am on the move on a phone and cannot scroll too much and see who wrote what exactly.
There were two package updates that may be related: device-mapper and lvm2.
Here’s the update log:

One says he doesn’t receive password prompt (so it could be it), another says he can decrypt, so it isn’t this.
This may both refer to me. I don’t get to the passphrase promt. I can decrypt booting from a live stick.
Mod edit: Consecutive posts merged.
maybe this might fix it: [pkg-upd] 41-2: install/encrypt: add dlopen'ed libcryptsetup (a5d87d40) · Commits · Packages / core / mkinitcpio · GitLab Remember, we don’t test luks encryption on our basic os-update checks. most of our developers don’t use encryption …

I thought using encryption was pretty common.
OK, how do I apply this to my system? I can’t access the console from emergency mode.
I just realized that an information got lost by removing an unrelated post I replied to:
My grub is unencrypted.
You have to chroot from a live usb, after unlocking the partition with cryptsetup command. There is a guide somewhere in the tutorial section.
Yes, but I have to recreate the complete file system. How do I mount into a subdirectory of an already occupied mount point?
Nope. Read how to chroot. For example here
Although the tutorial on the forum is better. Look at the tutorial section, for example “recovering from interrupted update” also explains it.
I’ve chrooted and ran the command provided by philm.
In step 6/7 I get errors:
Refreshing PackageKit…
Error connecting: Could not connect: No such file or directory
error: command failed to execute correctly
Remove packagekit, it is unneded security risk.
Done. Installed without errors but unfortunately it didn’t help. No boot.
Does this mean you get still the behaviour reported initially? Can we see a log of the boot process? This [SOLVED] LUKS Systemd fresh install times out "waiting for device ..." / Installation / Arch Linux Forums looks similar - might be some misconfiguration.
