Hello,
First thing first, I introduce myself, as on any forum : I am Sébastien, from France, aged 52, completely beginner concerning Linux (now you know whom you’re dealing with ).
I’ve been testing many distributions (is that the right word ?) and always had some troubles. Ubuntu Mate was a good one but my monitor switched to sleep mode sometimes, and no solution was found. This is why I decided to try a non-Ubuntu based version, and I know have the same issue I had with Kubuntu : I cannot access some websites : Outlook webmail, Youcare (I do not really like Gogle, Yaho…), Météo France, and many others. I wanted to try with my WIFI connection, but it doesn’t work. Any idea what I can do ?
Thanks a lot.
Regards,
Seb
Hi and welcome,
Sure, or "Distro"s.
I can already a haiku about DNS, but we are not sure yet.
Just to be clear - you can connect to the internet, but only some sites cannot be accessed using the browser? But some other sites do work?
Its usually best to start with some system information, so please run this command and copy the output here;
inxi -Farz
For a general guide including how to format code, etc, please see this:
Welcome! Hang in there & collectively we will get you sorted. Congrats for taking the leap into Linux user world. It gets easier…R
Hi,
If I type the command you told me, Iobtain this :

The kind of issue my computer has is that I can’t access some websites after some time running, or when I switch it on. The problem is solved when I supress the active LAN connection, then create a new one. I also have to ask my WIFI printer its address, and change it in Manjaro’s parameters. DHCP issue ?
Thanks a lot.
Regards,
Sébastien
Could it be that you run out of RAM? Have you cleaned the cache when the issue occured? I would recommend you to implement a swap partition or file.
This would be strange, wouldn’t it ? This computer was designed for Win10 and worked with Win11 also. And I do not have this issue with Gnome based distros (but other issues).
- Are you using wired connection, or wireless connection to access internet?
- What brand / model of modem / router you are using?
- When you cannot access some websites, does it happen to all websites at that time? Or only the same few websites?
- Which browser you are using?
- When you cannot access some websites, can you do a ping on your terminal?
ping google.com
Let’s get these done first, before we probe other possible causes.
- Wired for the computer, WIFI for the printer
- I couldn’t tell. It’s my provider’s box
- Nope, only some websites
- Mainly Chrome, but also happens with Firefox and Edge
- I’ll try not to forget. Works fine at that precise moment
Ok, further questions:
- Do you observe a certain pattern in the inaccessibility issue? Example: only happen on certain websites, only happen on certain timing, only happen on certain browser, only happen after x hours of internet usage?
- When inaccessibility happens, what error message is displayed on your browser? Do all affected websites produce same error message?
- Are you able to identify the brand / model of your modem / router? I am asking this because few months ago, i changed my internet service provider (ISP) and they provided new all-in-one box (modem and router in 1 device). Since then, i have been experiencing intermittent connection on both my wired and wireless connections. The ISP investigated and found no issue, but the problem persisted. Then, i performed my own investigation and found out that the all-in-one box (some China brand, new model) provided, was using out-dated kernel (5 years old), and it has been modded by Chinese, which constantly transmitting data to some unknown server. I raised the issue with my ISP, and they eventually reluctantly changed the box to a Taiwan brand. Since then, my intermittent connection issue resolved.
- When intermittent connection happens, what would resolve the issue? Do you leave computer on for few minutes, and the connection auto-restore by itself? Or you need to reboot your computer? Or you need to reboot your modem/router?
- Nope. It’s random. It mainly happens a certain amount of hours not using the web.
- The page isn’t displayed, and the the page is like there is no connection kind of my computer is offline.
- It’s an all-in-one, but I’ve been using it for years. Still, the issue is with KDE distros, as if the OS was not able to find the right IP address.
- “kill” the actual connection, and create a new one for the computer, and ask my printer’s address to enter it manually on Manjaro. No need to reboot anything. I was wondering whether static IP would solve the problem. I have many WIFI connected devices, and no issue. I’m not sure the router is the problem.
If you could provide the error message, that would be helpful - whether it is a timeout error, or server error, or anything.
From your inxi -Farz
output, there is nothing I could identify as potential problem.
And I presume you haven’t done some unknown tweaking on your default network settings.
Since you mentioned the intermittent issue is random, the issue is unlikely related to your OS / software, and I tend to suspect either one of the followings:
- hardware-related (RAM / storage) - corrupted network setting files.
- device issue (your router)
- ISP-related issue (though why ISP would block random websites at random timing, I do not know. I only know that if I suddenly cannot access some websites,
Tor Browser
usually is my solution).
To rule out (1), I notice your computer has WiFi card installed.
Could you try to connect your computer to your router via WiFi, and see if the connection stable?
To rule out (3), try to use Tor Browser
when you experience intermittent connection.
However, given the above, your modem / router box would be my prime suspect.
I might be prejudiced, but I don’t think a ISP-provided device would be able to handle too many connections, especially you also indicated that “I’ve been using it for years”, ie. it is an old device.
If the above troubleshooting to rule out (1) and (3) doesn’t work for you, you might want to borrow a router/modem to test the connection.
Or, simply invest in a new one.
I cannot connect my computer to my router via WiFi (I don’t know how to). The other distros, and Windows look for connections available, and you choose the right one. With Manjaro, it seems I have to connect manually, and there are too many things to fill for my knowledge.
From your system tray, click the icon Networks
(or you can also launch Networks
from Application Launcher
(the equivalent of Start Menu
in WinOS)
Ensure the WiFi
icon is in enabled
state.
From the list of WiFi networks shown, select your network in use, key in the password, and click enter.
That’s all.
It looks like the WiFi card is not activated. When I try to connect, no network is shown.
The wireless connection in plasma should look similar to this
From which you should be able to select a network to connect to, and should be prompted for a password if/when needed.
Your wireless card seems to be inoperable at the moment.
Does this happen to be a dual-boot with windoze?
This card should be working out of the box.
But in situations where windoze was not fully shutdown (fast start enabled = hibernation instead of shutdown) it would not function.
Example related thread
No Winwhatever on my computer. Single boot
Nothing written on it, no sticker or anything if you turn it over and look at the back side?
So it is a wireless capable device - and it works exactly the same with Manjaro:
you scan the network (this is done automatically) and then choose the correct one (your router) and then you are asked for the password to the network …
Use the network icon in the panel to select the network - you appear to go a different route here.
