Cannot login after trying to update dunstify file

First of all sorry if this is the wrong place for this.

I’m running i3 Manjaro and have been trying to update the dunstify file but have been getting the failed update message due to dunstify already existing. I deleted the file in the terminal, then updated it through the update manager and finally rebooted. I’m now getting “snap daemon failed” messages when I start up & shut down, and on the login screen I enter my password but it keeps coming up with “incorrect password” even though it’s the correct one.

Is there any way I can solve this issue or will I need to do a fresh install?
I’m relatively new to Manjaro and Linux in general and I apologise in advance if I need some things explaining.

Thanks all.

Welcome to Manjaro! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

  1. Please read the information behind this link. It will help you to post necessary information.

[HowTo] Provide System Information

  1. Please press the three dots below your post and then press the :pencil2:
  • If you give us information about your system, we can see what we’re talking about and make better suggestions.
  • You can do this by using inxi in a terminal or in console.
sudo inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width
  • Personally identifiable information such as serial numbers and MAC addresses are filtered out by this command
  • Presenting the information in this way allows everyone to be familiar with the format and quickly find the items they need without missing anything.
  1. Copy the output from inxi (including the command) and paste it into your post.
  • To make it more readable, add 3 backticks ``` on an extra line before and after the pasted text.
(Wisdom lies in reading  )

/usr/bin/dunstify
is in the package dunst

reinstall that package
sudo pacman -S dunst

This should work - but it’s better to combine this with a full system update.

sudo pacman -Syyu dunst

Is there a way I can access the terminal from the login screen? I can’t login as it comes up with “invalid password” when I try and it’s the same story when trying to enter the password on a tty2 screen.

no

You can try to log in as root in a TTY - but it’s likely the same password.

After that, you can boot the live system you installed from
manjaro-chroot -a
and try to repair the system/set a new password from there

In the TTY window I’m getting the same invalid password messages and I’ve had a go at repairing it from the live system on the usb I used to install it but even that’s giving me error messages. I think the only thing I can do is do a fresh install.

Thanks for the help you’ve given me anyway, sorry if it was a waste of time.

Maybe that is the case - maybe not.
More than likely it is the latter.

What error messages?
Did the chroot not work?

… do whatever you think is easier:
keep trying to repair or just throw in the towel and reinstall

I was an idiot. Turns out chroot IS working and I was reading the GRUB message at the beginning thinking it hadn’t worked, or needed to select something…

Anyway, I’ve done a full system update and changed both user and root passwords however when trying to login I get the same result. I enter the password, it says “invalid password” and when I shut it down it comes up on the blank screen [FAILED] Failed to start Snap Daemon, although this message was happening from the start.

I’ve been given a lot of hope finding the chroot was working whereas before I was thinking things were bleak.

This doesn’t make sense to me.
When you boot the live system and then from there chroot
(manjaro-chroot -a)
then you are inside your system - and you are the admin user (root)

If you set a new password for root as well as for your user account
and get no complaints while doing it
that should be it.

Choose a password that is easy to type - or check that the characters you type actually correspond to what you see on screen
(I’m thinking about a QWERTZ keyboard vs. a QWERTY keyboard, for example)

But we are very much in the realm of speculation here.
See the second post (of @andreas85).

I’ve updated my first post.
Sorry I couldn’t provide it sooner, I couldn’t (or thought) enter into a terminal so had no way of doing the steps in the second post.

out of interest - because I have seen this weird looking output a few times:

What command did you issue to get this output that you posted here?

I’m asking because the number 12 is prepended to almost every word of the output - making it quite unreadable.

The original output surely does not look that way - or does it?

The output is the exact copy of what came up after the last command. Here’s the steps I performed after entering the terminal in the live session:

su
manjaro-chroot -a
inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width

Wonder why it’s putting the twelves before almost everything?

so you used su - not sudo
ok
should not make a difference

But it could be enlightening for others (if not for you)
to provide the responses that you got to those commands as well

just to verify that the chroot actually was successful, for example
(which is the goal, but is not guaranteed)

You can post the inxi output from the live system - no need for chroot to do that.

It may even get in the way and produce this strange output.

so:

inxi just from the live system - not from chroot

Yeah, it worked for me guys.

What does that even mean?
What is your comment supposed to mean?

I used the “su” command as I thought having root access would be the best way to go so there would be no potential problems. Just tried and using su, sudo or even none of those commands doesn’t make a difference. Interesting to learn.

Here’s the output of when I chroot:

[manjaro-i3 manjaro]# manjaro-chroot -a
grub-probe: error: cannot find a GRUB drive for /dev/sdb1. Check your device.map.
grub-probe: error: cannot find a GRUB drive for /dev/sdb1. Check your device.map.
