Cannot connect to wifi extender

First of all, hi everyone, this is my first post on the forum and I hope y’all will be able to give me a hand.

As the title already suggests, I’m having issues connecting my brand new dual booted manjaro installation to a network extender located in another room. The network I’m currently using is the “real” router, but as you might guess the signal is unbearably unstable and crappy. This issue is driving me crazy, I have like 10 other devices (including windows on this machine) that can connect just fine ranging from IOS, to android, even a raspberry Pi.

I’m attaching the output of lspci -v as I’ve seen this requested in other threads. Btw, I’ve tried installing drivers with manjaro’s internal tool but to no avail

If your wifi extension is functioning badly it is not the recipient system but the connection between the base and the extender.

How this connection should be configured - that is blowing in the wind - as only you have the hands on.

So recheck the requirements, configuration and connection / bridging options for your base and the extension in use - it is most certainly the cause of your issue.

Renaming the bridge (extension/AP) may reveal that you are not connecting to the extending AP but directly to your base.

Also - if you are connection your extension using WiFi - that WiFi is as good or bad as the connection you can make using your computer’s WiFi considering obstacles like walls and the signal path through those obstacles. Any angled connection through obstacles are getting poorer the wider the angle is - trust me - 15 years of experience with various wireless signals.

The most common connection between extenders and base - is using a wired connection.

The wifi extension is functioning as intended. I have 2 Ipads, 5 android phones, 1 macintosh, a windows computer, a macbook pro and a raspberry pi all being able to connect, so this is definitely not the problem. Also, the extender already has a different name from the AP it is serving.

I know that my approach isn’t the best, but that’s what I have to deal with as I unfortunately don’t know how to craft money out of thin air to pay the installation of a cable that should go up a floor just to make my extender work :(. Also, as I already mentioned, the extender is working with a variety of different devices, so my guess would be a driver issue

Yeah it should, that’s one of the reason why this issue has driven me crazy. Probably the extender does some sketchy thing that the wireless driver isn’t expecting? Is there any (even propietary at this point, sigh) solution to that?

  1. Does your Linux actually see the AP of the extender?
    • “No”
      Some problem with your driver.
    • “Yes”
      • What log messages do you get when you connect to it?
        Have this command run in a terminal before you try to connect:
        journalctl -xe --follow
  2. Or is your problem with staying connected?
  3. Or is your problem with connection throughput (eg. speed)?

People on the internet, especially those with knowledge are all over the internet don’t be surprised of the way we respond even if it has (unintended) similarities :wink:

Sorry for my passive aggressive answer, this issue drives me real mad because it forces me to reboot to “the other OS” (I’m not even gonna name it, ew) for anything that requires a stable connection. Manjaro sees the AP, but it gets stuck at “Setting network address” until it timeouts (I’m using NetworkManager). I’ll get back to this thread shortly after following your guide, thanks!

Quick update

As requested, I followed the logs when connecting to the network. The output is quite long and repetitive, I guess NetworkManager is trying to reconnect multiple times before giving up.

Btw, sorry for the random line breaks, I tried my best to fix the formatting. The original network’s SSID is Infostrada-31C289. The one ending with “2G_EXT” is the actual extender

Ok so it seems your driver is actually able to connect (associate) with your Extender, so far so good…
It might be that the drivers in the other OS’s are less sensitive to signal fluctuations as the Linux driver. (No idea if that is tunable)

Looks like a problem wrt to signal strength or congestion because of so many other devices connected to it?

Why are 2 devices trying to associate at same time?

I am as puzzled by this as you are. No idea why it is trying to connect to two networks at the same time. I don’t know if what you said about too many clients being connected constitutes an issue, it doesn’t on other (even *nix) devices so idk. Maybe a driver update/downgrade or a (re)installation is necessary? Considering how annoying this is I’m even going as far as installing propietary software if that makes manjaro more usable (sigh)

Oh, I see, thanks for the correction (should I edit the title?). Well that’s weird: I am sure about the password, because I can connect succesfully and stay connected to “Infostrada-31C289”, the problem arises with “Infostrada-31C289_2GEXT”

That could mean your extender needs a different password…

Nope, the extender’s password is the same as the network it’s serving. I just checked on my other devices

Ugh, okay, I’ll try. To be honest I didn’t configure this crappy extender, my parents did. Hopefully I can figure this out :joy:

I changed the password of the extender to numbers only, but the issue still persists. The relevant part that popped to my eyes when reading the logs is attached below

Well this time you are actually able to authenticate using that password:

you are only not getting an IP from the DHCP server…

You might want to check that part in your Wifi router or extender…
