Cannot boot KDE ISO

I’ve tried to boot KDE ISO using Ventoy and SUSE Studio ImageWriter and it failed with both. After reaching GRUB, the screen goes black and nothing else happens; it doesn’t even print any messages. I tried booting with open-source drivers and also with proprietary ones, and the same thing happens. I also tried editing the command to remove the quiet option and see what the boot process says, but it still doesn’t print anything.

I checked the SHA-1 hash of the ISO on the USB drive, and it’s the same.

Your own Support topic is less congested than Update Announcement threads and should allow others to more easily help with your issue.

Please help others to help you, by providing your system information as described (below) along with any other detail that might be relevant.

Welcome to the Manjaro community

As a new or infrequent forum user, please take some time to familiarise yourself with forum requirements, and the many ways to use the forum to your benefit.

Note: By virtue of using the Manjaro forum you acknowledge and agree to follow Rules and Guidelines outlined; so, you really should read them:

Required Reading

Work with us, not against us

It is important to provide as much actionable information as possible in your first post, rather than simply indicating there is a problem. Please also be prepared to provide output from commands if/when asked.

Simply waiting for others to ask you questions is counter-productive – typically, nobody has a :crystal_ball: at their disposal – and your clear, concise and accurate input is often relied upon in order to help you.

Please help others to make informed suggestions based on information you provide.

System Information

While information from *-fetch type apps might be fine for someone wishing to buy your computer, for Support purposes it’s better to ask your system directly; :eyes:

Output of the inxi command (with appropriate parameters, and formatted according to forum guidelines) will generate information useful for those wishing to help:

Suggested inxi command (use either):

inxi -zv8 (short-form)
inxi --filter --verbosity=8 (long-form)
inxi man pages (manual)
Running `inxi` within a `chroot` environment
  • Add --color=0 to the long-form command, or…
  • Change the short-form command to inxi -zv8c0

Did you hash compare the hash of the ISO to the SHA from website ?

256sum and 512sum is also available - as is signture - the latter is the best verification.

Place the signature and the iso in same folder then verify using GPG.

gpg --verify <sigfile>

… also make sure Secure Boot is disabled in your firmware. If you gonna to realize a dual boot scenario with Windoze, make sure Fast startup is switched off before shutting down Windoze.

Sorry for not answering, I forgot to check the forum.

I’m using Manjaro Xfce since a lot of years and I wanted to experiment how KDE would work in my PC, so I installed the DE and I created another user where I would only use Plasma (for avoiding problems with the configuration of Xfce in my main user), it worked without no problem when I used the X11 session, but when I try to use the Wayland session it only shows a blank screen for less than a minute and then it goes back to the login screen (I’m using LightDM).

I tried to debug what happened by creating another user and saving journalctl logs when I tried to log in using the Wayland session. This was like a month ago, but the problem remains even after updating. I wanted to put here the logs but they are very long and I can’t paste a link to a Pastebin here.

(I’m telling you this because it may be related with what happened with the LiveUSB)

So I wanted to try to use KDE from the latest ISO so I could check if it’s a problem with my current installation, but then the problem I described in the first post happened.

BTW, after that I tried to check with Fedora KDE LiveUSB and a similar problem happened when I tried to boot from it.

  • I did use manjaro-kde-25.1-pre2-251215-linux618.iso
  • It’s a desktop computer, it has like 17 years, I know it’s pretty old and obsolete, but it’s what I have.
  • It only has an Intel GMA X4500, it has 384 MB VRAM and only supports OpenGL 2.1 (I don’t know why inxi says OpenGL 3.3, it doesn’t work).

Did you hash the content of the USB to match the SHA from website ?
Did you hash compare the hash of the ISO to the SHA from website ?

Yes I hashed the ISO in my hard drive and in the USB, it gave me the same SHA-1 checksum in both and it’s the same from the website.

… also make sure Secure Boot is disabled in your firmware. If you gonna to realize a dual boot scenario with Windoze, make sure Fast startup is switched off before shutting down Windoze.

I don’t have Windows in this computer and it has BIOS, not UEFI.

Sorry for my bad English, it’s not my mother language.

Did you create the Ventoy properly for a BIOS system?

The following guide explains how to create a Ventoy USB for a UEFI system – for BIOS one should best leave the Ventoy configuration at the defaults.

I found what was happening with the Live USB, it seems my USB drive or my motherboard are so slow that it takes like less than 10 minutes to load the OS, that’s why it seemed like my computer was frozen.

With this I could confirm that KDE Plasma with Wayland can work on my PC (I was worried that it didn’t work when I installed it because of the integrated GPU). So the problem with the ISO is solved, but not the one where I can’t log in using the Wayland session in my current installation, should I create another thread for that?

Yes, that might be best.
