Can not connect or see any 5 GHz networks anymore

Up until now I was able to solve problems myself but this one is odd. I have searched the net and this forum but could not find anything that solves my issue.

All of a sudden so it seems I can not see or connect to 5 GHz WiFi anymore.
On various manjaro machines.

I take this Thinkpad T450 for this thread.

I tried different kernels, checked my WiFi regulatory domain, switched from wpa3 to wpa2, checked channels and even tried a different router/network.

Interestingly this happens on different computers, that previously all connected to 5Ghz.

Here is info on one machine I selected for troubleshooting:

Odd thing is one manjaro DELL machine can happily connect to 5Ghz wpa3.

Maybe someone could point me in the right direction.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance.

Alex

Sync the package pacmanlogviewer to dissect the log.

It is impossible to provide a meaningful response.

From the beginning - it is inconclusive - there is no one that can troubleshoot such a broad issue.

I would not even know where to begin… You will have to look at broad commonalities…

5G is ±half the wave length of 2.4G and thus more sensitive to

  • signal/noise level
  • obstructions
  • wireless crowd

Brain storming

  • Git bisect the kernel sources, build and rebuild until you find it.
  • Has the router firmware been updated
  • Does the router implement newer protocols and checks that excludes incompatible clients
  • Did you change your router configuration e.g. 802.11r or PMF or BSS Transition

I cannot provide further ideas … have fun :slight_smile:

Yep thanks. You are absolutely correct. It is a broad issue.
Therefore I was hesitant to post it here.

Reason why I did post is that any other device connects flawlessly to 5GHz wpa3 only the manjaro machines do not see 5 GHz anymore after the last update.

Only one DELL Manjaro with a centrino 6300 WiFi still connects flawlessly to 5Ghz wpa3.

The router I tried to rule out by trying a few completely different routers with a standard config. Still the manjaro machines could not connect to 5Ghz.

So IMHO it has to do with something that changed in those manjaro machines.

Thanks anyway.

In router configuration, try with WPA2 encryption.

journalctl -f
while you are (trying to) connect
could be helpful

I tried this. But it makes no difference.

It is strange because it seems that the WiFi card does not support 5Ghz.
But why then does it work on another distro. Odd.

   ~  journalctl -f                                                                                            ✔

I belive I read somewere on the net that these Intel Wireless 7265 cards do have problems.

Well for now I have installed a different distro to get the work done on the machine that is important.

After that the quickest way is to ditch the card and get a known good one and put back the SSD with the manjaro install and be done with it.

Thanks again to all. Your time and effort is greatly appreciated.

Alex

How did you manage to make the terminal output look that awful?
copy/paste and then mark and have it formatted with </> as preformatted text
same as with your system info above

I’ll not even try to read this. :man_shrugging:

another question:

what exact command did you use to generate this output in the initial post (system info):

because this looks strange to me:

the two last lines, the second interface ID and the info

Providing terminal output

When posting terminal output, copy the output and paste it here, wrapped in three (3) backticks, before AND after the pasted text. Like this:

```
pasted text
```

Or three (3) tilde signs, like this:

~~~
pasted text
~~~

This will just cause it to be rendered like this:

Sed
sollicitudin dolor
eget nisl elit id
condimentum
arcu erat varius
cursus sem quis eros.

Instead of like this:

Sed sollicitudin dolor eget nisl elit id condimentum arcu erat varius cursus sem quis eros.

Alternatively, paste the text you wish to format as terminal output, select all pasted text, and click the </> button on the taskbar. This will indent the whole pasted section with one TAB, causing it to render the same way as described above.

Thereby increasing legibility thus making it easier for those trying to provide assistance.

For more information, please see:

:bangbang::bangbang: Additionally

If your language isn’t English, please prepend any and all terminal commands with LC_ALL=C. For example:

LC_ALL=C bluetoothctl

This will just cause the terminal output to be in English, making it easier to understand and debug.

If you want more assistance, I recommend correcting this because, as @Nachlese said, he won’t attempt reading it and no doubt just about everyone feels that way.

Got it thanks!

Thanks - I asked because I have never seen this with my wireless interface.
Neither have I seen this:

nor do I have a separate interface ID - I have never seen this:

to my untrained eye it looks like you have two interfaces running on one device

and

but that may have to do with IPv6 - but usually the WAN interface is on the router, no?

Perhaps some accidental misconfiguration?

can you point to what makes you say this?

Well I did iwlist wlp3s0 freq and I got:

 iwlist wlp3s0 freq                                                                                ✔  8s 
wlp3s0 13 channels in total; available frequencies :
          Channel 01 : 2.412 GHz
          Channel 02 : 2.417 GHz
          Channel 03 : 2.422 GHz
          Channel 04 : 2.427 GHz

Shoudn’t it also have the 5Ghz info?

If I pull up the manufacturers page it does clearly state it has 5GHz.
And it has worked in the past with 5GHz.

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/83635/intel-dual-band-wirelessac-7265/specifications.html

Under “networks” in kde I exclusively see 2.5GHz APs.

In LinSSID I also only see 2.4 GHz APs.

It is as if 5GHz doesn’t exist anymore. :stuck_out_tongue:

Alex

Not sure, but you might be on to something…

Maybe the 5GHz controller is malfunctioning…

:man_shrugging:

If so, it’s a hardware issue…

1 Like

Yes. A hardware issue That’s what I was thinking too.

I’ll just ditch It I guess. A few bucks will get me one that works. :slightly_smiling_face:

Alex

That’s all I can recommend, too.

1 Like

Just tested - it should. Even if i am currently on a 2.4 network.
So it is either a firmware or hardware. But judging by the green on the linux hardware site, even from many arch distros, it cannot be firmware. So it looks like a hardware issue to me too.

Okay off to the recycling bin it goes.
