Boot fails after GRUB on Live USB, but Puppy Linux and Hiren's/Windows work

Device:
Dell Inspiron 14 - 5100
Mfg year: 2018
CPU: i5 7th gen
RAM: 8 GB
HD/SSD: none.
BIOS: updated yesterday by a technician. Secure boot disabled.
Hardware: deep cleaned yesterday by a technician.

What’s happening:

  • With a Manjaro Plasma Full version bootable USB, the device boots to the GRUB splash screen, and then goes black and stays black. I have left it for 5 minutes to see if it comes out of the black screen, but it stays black. Actually, the GRUB splash screen appears for less than a second, then the screen goes black, and the white light on the laptop turns off, indicating that the laptop has shutdown. However, if I press the power button, nothing happens. I hold down the power button for 5-ish seconds, then release, then press it again, and now the laptop turns on again. I press ctrl-alt-F2 at various moments to see if Manjaro booted but just had a display problem, but the screen remains black.

    • I’ve tried with UEFI and with legacy boot. No difference.
  • With a bootable USB with Hiren’s Boot CD (based on Windows), the laptop boots just fine and video works fine. I watch a video, and it works. The Device Manager says the display adapter in use is Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. That adapter has no interesting settings. I change the display resolution, and the only options that work are:

      • 1366x768, 32B, 60Hz
      • 1024x768, 32B, 85Hz
    • The webcam is detected but the driver fails.
  • MX Linux reaches the stage init and then shuts down just like Manjaro. Same for Rescatux, Fedora, and Debian Gnome. One of them at some point gave an error about drm atomic helper wait for flip done timeout or something like that. I have tried again and that error has not returned.

  • Puppy Linux Fossapup64 9.5 works! WiFi, video, everything seems fine. Just that the max volume seems a little bit quieter than in Hiren’s/Windows. When Puppy Linux shuts down, the power button then works as expected, instead of having to hold down the power button for 5 seconds before turning the machine on as happens with all the other GNU/Linuxes.

What I understand:

  • The system boots to the GRUB screen and then something fails. The machine does not shut down completely when this happens, as evidenced by the necessity to hold down the power button for 5 seconds before being able to power on again.
  • In Hiren’s Boot CD, 800x600 doesn’t work. Curious.
  • Puppy does something different than the other distros, and it works.

Please help
I welcome suggestions about what might be broken. Is this a hardware failure? I’m in South America – maybe this is a fake, and it’s not actually Dell? But the technician who just spent a few days working on it would have recognized if it were fake, I think. I want to install Manjaro, but for now it looks like only Windows works. Puppy is nice, but not my preference for long term daily use.

Is ahci enabled in BIOS/UEFI?

Welcome to Manjaro! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

  1. Please read the information behind this link. It will help you to post necessary information. [HowTo] Provide System Information
  2. Please press the three dots below your post and then press the :pencil2:
  • If you give us information about your system, we can see what we’re talking about and make better suggestions.
  • You can do this by using inxi in a terminal or in console.
inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width
  • Personally identifiable information such as serial numbers and MAC addresses are filtered out by this command
  • Presenting the information in this way allows everyone to be familiar with the format and quickly find the items they need without missing anything.
  1. Copy the output from inxi (including the command) and paste it into your post.
  • To make it more readable, add 3 backticks ``` on an extra line before and after the pasted text.
(Wisdom lies in reading  )

You can also use maxi -eg

to collect information about the boot process. This works,

  • when you are in your running system (with CTRL+ALT+F2).
  • And also in a live environment

So you have to try inxi in puppy :fire_engine:

Yes, AHCI is enabled in BIOS/UEFI.

In case it’s useful, here’s the System Activty Log /var/log/messages from Puppy. The timestamps seem a bit wonky. I’m in UTC-5, and some timestamps are 5 hours ahead of reality, but I assume everything is in order.

Try other USB ports and wait at least 20 min.

It could be that the ISO was not burned properly, have you checked it?

I tried all the USB ports. They are not the problem. The machine does a semi-shutdown, the indicator light turns off. I will wait 20 minutes and see what happens.

The ISOs are burned properly. The Live USB systems boot correctly in other laptops.

I waited 20 minutes. The screen remained black or off. The laptop fan remained on, with heat coming out of the vents as during normal operation. I pushed ctrl-alt-F2. Nothing happened.

I do not have an external monitor with me to test if external video works. I could try that on Monday.

I posted this in the “Graphics & Display” section, because initially I thought this was a problem with video output. Now I’m not sure. If it matters, maybe a moderator can re-categorize this thread somewhere more appropriate.

Maybe try to add systemd.unit=multi-user.target to the kernel parameters by editing the grub menu entry. Then it will boot to non-graphical login. From there you can investigate the problem.

journalctl -b0

In case of plasma:

startx /usr/bin/startplasma-x11

Or just start sddm (login manager):

sudo systemctl start sddm.service

This did not work. I edited the boot parameters by typing that parameter and pressing Enter. Then I chose the option “Boot using open source drivers”, and then, as before, the computer turned off and the screen went black.

After editing type F10 or CTRL +X to boot. There is literally an explanation on the bottom.

Ah, thanks for the explanation. I was looking in the wrong place. Now I’ve done as you show, and boot fails just the same. I add the parameter, I press F10, and after a moment this appears on the screen:

Starting version 251.4-1-manjaro

That appears for less than a second, and then the screen turns off and the computer semi shuts down, as before.

Aside:
A note for the UI/UX team:
The boot option I chose before, incorrectly, was this:

I know there’s text at the bottom that says “E = Edit Boot Options”, but I had overlooked that and assumed that the icon of a document and a pencil was the same as “Edit Boot Options”. It is not the same.

This might very well not be an easy one…

Can you try to – instead of or alongside the systemd.unit=multi-user.target kernel parameter – add intel_idle.max_cstate=0?

Thinking is: you seem to make it to userland and graphics init seems to not be it – so maybe power-management init? It might also be good to rummage around your BIOS settings for something that looks power-management (C-States, P-States, …) related.

[EDIT] In that still same vein, maybe also try systemd.mask=tlp.service

Did you verify that the content on the live USB is valid?

Looking at the current forum issues mostly mentioning KDE, could you try another edition like Xfce?

That looks pretty much like a corrupted image… like @mithrial advices:

  1. Keep sure the image is correct.
  2. Try another ISO with a different DE.

Also on the boot parameters remove quiet which hides diagnostic messages.

Check BIOS and Windows for Fast Boot turned off.

Maybe you could try using a different USB drive? Or perhaps the iso is corrupted, though that seems weird considering multiple distros don’t want to boot. Best guess is your USB drive is bad.

I tried both. Boot continues failing as before.

There’s an option in the BIOS to enable CSTATES, and it is enabled. Power management in the BIOS doesn’t show anything interesting. The power events logs says ASF2 force off – probably when the boot failed and I held down the power button to turn it all the way off. Fastboot is set to Throrough which says Performs complete hardware and configuration initialization during boot.

I have verified various times that the USB boots in other machines.

Whatever the problem is, I think it’s deeper than KDE. Consider that the GNOME edition of Fedora also fails. The only Linux that has worked so far is Puppy Linux. Maybe it’s time to investigate their boot process, or post a thread on their forum.

I posted on the Puppy Linux forum to see if anyone there who knows their boot process can lend a hand. Puppy Linux and Windows boot, but all other GNU/Linux distros fail - Puppy Linux Discussion Forum

FWIW I when adding my earlier reply verified that you had the newest BIOS for your system flashed (2.20.0 from the above inxi output) since that would’ve otherwise been my first suggestion. Seems/ed like a potentially interesting one – but am afraid to say I haven’t a clue what to suggest otherwise now that it’s also seemingly not power-management init.
