Black screen with only mouse cursor on Steam with Nvidia card

Hello,
I’m currently facing a black screen issue with only the mouse cursor visible when trying to use my Nvidia graphics card, while launching games through Steam. The issue is specific to gaming on Steam, other applications seem to work fine.

Any suggestions, tips, or additional steps I could take to resolve this issue would be incredibly helpful.
Thank you in advance for your time and assistance!

Is that a Laptop what you are using?

Just a slight recommendation, you run into much less bugs with only one active GPU and use a normal driver instead a hybrid one.

I also had a strange GPU (nvidia 2080Ti) issue in KDE but since im not using XFCE, im not sure if it helps you…

There are may Compositor settings in XFCE also?

If yes, then maybe look for a option “allow applications to block compositing” and unselect it.

Its just a wild guess… :face_with_peeking_eye:

Yes it’s a laptop. Turned off the compositing but no luck.

I have a feeling this might be it. I use hybrid drivers too

Hi, I tried to remove the hybrid drivers but also no success.

I had the same problem and I disabled GPU acceleration in settings. You can open settings with steam icon, go to interface and disable it.

Thanks for your comment. I tried both, but it still doesn’t work

image

When run:

sudo optirun -b none nvidia-settings -c :8

I get this:

Not sure if this Display Device info is normal when you have a Laptop and no external display connected

Do you have any new errors showed in journal after your new issue occurred?

Post your output from Journal:

journalctl -p 3 -xb

More System Information’s are always good:
inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width

Edit:
When i understand you right, your issue is only related to the 3D Gaming Applications… so you don’t have a problem with Steam, but with Proton probably.

Just simple switch the different Proton versions, since your nvidia GPU also looks pretty old… you may run into this issue with the newest Proton.

Hello,
Thank you for your reply,
I can’t run steam games with my Nvidia card that is the main issue.

journalctl -p 3 -xb

Do you have any Native Linux Games in Steam? To see the difference, if not then it could be related to Proton…

:point_up_2:

If you still have issues, when was the last time that gaming was working for you and what did you changed since then?

I always used my integrated intel graphics, but recently decided to use switchable graphics.

This happens when try running Asphalt 9 in Steam

You don’t know how to switch Proton version’s or why you aren’t responding to this point?

So you never had your nvidia card running in the last several years, is that correct?

Then you probably need to switch to legacy nvidia drivers with this old GPU. I don’t think your GPU won’t work with the newest nvidia driver.

The real question is also, if your iGPU not gives better performance as the dinosaur nvidia GPU anyways?

I tried different proton versions without success. That’s right, I haven’t used the video card in quite some time. I will try with older drivers.
Thank you.

Did it work?

Ugh.

Do you know how this works?

Are you using prime-run with these games?

Boo.
Just because you have trouble managing the hybrid state does not mean that ‘one gpu or the other’ configurations are recommendable for all users. In fact, they are not even compatible with all systems.

Dont do this. Especially if you dont know what you are doing.

Unless the BIOS provides options for disabling one of the GPUs, or you are in for configuring something like ‘reverse-PRIME’ then you shouldnt do something like this. Well, actually, most options that dont involve the BIOS require PRIME in the first place. You have a hybrid system. Outside of a BIOS option or being a l337 haxor, you should be using the hybrid profile provided by mhwd.

Dont do this.

OK. Can we start over?

OP, can you please return to the original configurations?
That is - video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime profile in mhwd.
To reinstall it I will include a forced command here:

sudo mhwd -f -i pci video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime

NOW. If you are back to a supported scenario.

Please give a test of PRIME;

glxinfo | grep 'renderer string'
prime-run glxinfo | grep 'renderer string'

@wils0n

huh. I missed this. You are trying to use bumblebee commands.
Did you do this to your steam games too?

You are using PRIME, not bumblebee.

(or you should be. I dont know about if you have problematic packages or configs)

For example. To use the nvidia with PRIME on steam a game options should look like

prime-run %command%

That example of error was in the very first post.

:face_exhaling:

Thank you for your reply.

prime-run %command%

Running this with Asphalt 9 on Steam doesn’t even start the game. When I try to run Brawlhalla with Proton Experimental get this:

No launch options, the game runs smoothly with Nvidia card.
I noticed that Dota 2, CS2 doesn’t run on Steam (native linux games), initially get this error and doesn’t even run

AppSystemDict: Error in Init() of interface 'RenderDeviceMgr001'!
prime-run glxinfo | grep 'renderer string'
/usr/bin/prime-run: line 2: glxinfo: command not found

Thank you.

Well lets see about the mhwd status

mhwd -li -l

As for glxinfo not being found. Its provided by mesa-utils, which is normally installed I thought.
But if not you can install it to use glxinfo.

Thank you. I already installed mesa-utils.

mhwd -li -l
